I highly doubt that he's depressed, nas has always been known as a mellow, low-key chill type of guy since the illmatic dayz.. Another aspect that has been well known about nas since illmatic is that he's a legendary hip hop artist. Regarding the concept that he backed down from the "lyrics don't matter" question, nas is a smart dude who knows when interviewers are trying to stir up conflict in the game, therefore he handled it in a well and "real" type manner, Nas is a "thinker" period.

It's one thing if he's guarded about his personal life, but he never offers us nothing into how his mind works. randome question, I noticed that between the interviews 10 or more years ago, and now. Nas' voice has got really gritty. In here its really gritty but in the older interviews it was a little softer.

i noticed it recently as well, as i have been a long time fan of nas... but, there could be many reasons for the change in voice, a smoking habit, aging, which causes vocal chords to tense and sound differently than they did, and possibly the fact that he is using his voice differently to sound more mature in interviews/rhymes, like eminem and shyne. eminem used to sound nasal and inner city in all his shit, now his voice is clearer and the accent is gone, deliberately.
