  • A classic piece of journalism. Thanks for posting it.

  • Tim O'Brien brought me here.

  • "There's nothing left to say about this war. There's just nothing left to say." . . . Bob Simon nailed it.

  • and yet we forget and do the same all over again

  • Fucking horrible.

  • My god...this is so sad. To think how devastating war is.

  • God! that was just a massacre between 4:12 & like 4:30. Those poor kids / baby's and all :(

  • @sexymalcom1970: What year is this report from? From 1970 or '71? Later?

  • @toadster58 It may be the Easter Offensive of 1972, but not sure on that.

  • Great footage.

  • only the dead see the end of war

  • I wish news was like this. Malcom plz upload more

  • fuck thats raw...

  • war sucks

  • where was the graphic part? all i saw was dead gooks.

  • @realfastnigger please refrain from racist slurs. If you didnt recognise the women and children killed by a mine and their bodies strewn over the battlefield then you are either inhuman or blind. Vietnamese people are human beings not gooks

  • @sexymalcom1970 No, those gooks were nasty filthy fuckers who didn't even know what a toilet was. The woman would wear long baggy pants and when they had to piss they would lean one way and the piss would run down there leg. Your telling me that were inhumane or blind. gooks are nothing but animals and if you wish to argue more then go right ahead i was in Vietnam I know the facts.

  • @RRaider6 what fact? you travelled 1000s of miles from the USA to invade a country youve never been to; inorder to murder them in their homeland and insult their culture which existed 1000s of years before your ancestors stole, raped and pillaged from the native americans. I think your more of an animal than the vietnamese. The wars over you lost just be happy you came back alive 58000 of your compatriots didnt.

  • @sexymalcom1970 The first part of your comment is simply every war. the native Americans have reservations and casinos now there doing great. Oh and sir if you even want to get me started on the gooks being animals i will tell you that when they came to America they didnt know what a bathroom was so they used there tub to grow plants in it. and gooks have been digging spider holes for hundreds of years knowing more war will come that means they know there doing something wrong. which is living.

  • @RRaider6 what you refer to is that your country is more advanced. Vietnam was under occupation by many imperial nations that helped negate their technological development. Its now 2012 peasent cultures are modernising at a greater pace. I know many people in the west who also dont know how to use toilets. There isnt a Utopian society. Guerilla warfare is the oldest form of war its effective and deadly in the right terrain. In my ancestral region we have caves and tunnels too been there eons.

  • @realfastnigger how is bumfuck idaho made it past the pig shed yet?

  • @realfastnigger fuck you!! your a nigger, a black!! a disgusting creature... go back to africa and copulate with apes like you!!

  • This stuff used to be on the nightly news. It's why the public was so against the war, you could actually see your son KIA on the evening news before the Chaplin came to your door. It is strange how we are so manipulated by the media and government today. Mostly we see numbers, and video game reenactments. Our military is highly revered, not many think about what a terrible job they have to face, and what it does to them, they are all very brave.

  • @ratkillerinparadise You have hit the nail on the head there.

  • @solidsnake3131 thats very true . i just feel so sorry for the innocent ... but ur ryt we shud resort to killing to solve our differences

  • i feel sorry for the poor innocent vietmanese !!!!no one shud have to die especially not children and women and innocent men , most fight for fear or to protect themselves .. war is a real desease on mankind ... its ironic tho coz every person wants peace and love and understanding and friends , but the way othesr treat u for having something different or something they dont agree with it absolutely horrible .. just ask YOURSELF Y... i wud never get invovled in war or politics which cuase war

  • @chadale17 If you think about it, no one should die.

  • @chadale17 That's the duality of man, the Jungian thing. Humans are savage and civilized, kind and cruel, noble and deranged.

  • Wow these are the most hardcore gung ho ARVN Ive ever seen, maybe cause it was near the end of the war GIs were leaving.

  • @area51er6 All ARVN fought hard during the war. The most gallant stand was just before Saigon was taken. 6,000 ARVN vs 40,000 NVA. The NVA had an armored tank division and a regiment of its best. The south had 1 tank and just regular men. They beat the NVA and it took the NVA 3 tries to break through the defenses of the ARVN.

  • The ARVN never really fought that hard before, especially since they had the GI's all around, and they were corrupted within, black market crimes, numerous corrupt leaders of the south, diem, kahn, ky, thieu etc.. where as the NVA had tremendous morale within Ho Chi Minh, they all fought to the death, and the sprit was honest within all the northern forces, could you imagine some NVA trying to sell some ammo, or deal black market affairs, they'd be shot right away by their comrades!

  • @area51er6 NVA are assholes. They dont need to make deals, if someone doesnt agree with them, they shoot them. ARVN werent doing any crimes. All the people loved them. All the people hated the vc

  • I completely agree, the NVA started that war, sure the french f**ked that country up, but nobody gave Ho Chi Minh the right to invade the south and start killing, NVA nationalism is brainwashing. Imagine if the southerners invaded the north first, then they'd be the aggressors. But the south was happy being at peace, I'm just saying the south had no chance with their corrupt leaders, especially diem; a catholic in a buddhist nation!

  • @area51er6 i hated diem too, but when thieu became president, south vietnam was more loved.

  • @baberaider18 ya but then it was too late, I like Ky the best.

  • I dont know anyone who has ever wanted a war... so why do we have them?

  • after seeing them traumatised kids sitting amongst the dead and injured makes me realise my day wasn't so shit after all...... all war is evil

  • South Vietnam's Army was actually a good army. some of its officers were corrupt yes but the army itself was very stable. In the battle of Xuan Loc, only a cracked division of the 18th arvn division of 6,000 men stood against an army of 40,000 vietcong and nva. The numbers of vietcong and nva are still being changed around because it is thought that they vietcong had more men.

  • i cant amagine. war is hell

  • no mood to take prisoners kill em all!!!!

  • poor fuckin kids hit by that landmine.....

  • At 04:25, I realized my earlier comment was not as funny anymore. Watching those kids tore my heart apart. When I was in Kosovo, I saw two kids lay in a ditch, one of them with half his head gone. I could not sleep that night. I had seen Serbs and other combatants get torn apart, but kids.. I thought first, with the mined road, "HAHA! The motorcycle guy ran over a mine. LOL!" But then.. damn..

  • 02:08 - "Oh, fuck that."

  • war is not a joke

  • Vietnamzation what a joke, the south vietnamese were notorius corrupt and known to drop their weapons and retreat, they did have some crack units though

  • @TheRalphus666 In fairness, they did all right before your Congress gutted their aid in the 74 Budget.

  • "It is well that war is so terrible, other wise we would grow too fond of it"- Robert E. Lee

  • It´s especially interesting for young people, like me, to see how similar, if not identical, the situations are, from Vietnam to Afghanistan . on the ground that is, the combat. Only difference is the censur of today.

  • What I´m abotu to say is not meant as criticism, just an obervation.

Combat footage of American soldiers has almost become, well, like part of everyday life. It has become an integrated part of one´s life, one´s childhood, over the generations. I hope you get the message, i´m a bit blurry - the sensation I´m talking about is pretty hard to describe. I mean, my parents watched this when they were kids, my elder siblings watched the Gulf War, I´m watched Iraq and Afghanistan. It´s iconic, sts.

  • @Faxe90Swe We go to war way to much :(

  • This was honest reporting and emblematic of the war coverage. What conservatives didn't like about the press was accepting the detail of that honesty is what people are interested in seeing . They would have preferred patriotic propaganda to drown out the true images of war, in order to keep people supporting the war. - no matter how little they all knew about it.

As donald rumsfeld said "death has a tendency to encourage a depressing view of war" - it fucked up his fellow glory seekers.

  • I remember seeing this in 72 while living in london - There was alot of detail in this report. My only mem diff was the image of the guy shot at 1:25 - I thought he was shot when briefly poking his head up to get a view. He was aware of the camera recording his mistake and wounding.

This is what the brits saw on their BBC news.

  • That shit was fucked up....

  • For once you can the violence of war without censorship, unlike in videos of the Afghanistan/Irak war

  • Damn that guy just wasted that wounded dude in the little dug out

  • fuck i feel sick.

  • That last image was heartbreaking

  • "The pilot changes his mind"

OR the pilot was ORDERED to move to another location and support the battle. Pfft, journalists.

  • A war for nothing.

  • has anyone else noticed how afghanistan is pretty much a mirror war of vietnam?

  • @beta0blaster

"has anyone else noticed how afghanistan is pretty much a mirror war of vietnam?"

Far Too Few understand the overwhelming commonality of these two wars. I believe the malfunction is they aren't interested in all the facts - especially facts that dont agree with their worldview - so they follow blindly because the party line fed to them sounds so good. Then they blame others when things dont fall neatly into place, as advertised by their favorite politicians.

  • Very true and sad to see again.

  • Vietnam War is probably the worst in my book.

  • were journalists able to use such bias language back then?

  • @waddupnoob Depends, many of the places in the U.S. back then didn't give a shit about the racial slurs and what not.

  • @waddupnoob

Seriously, help me understand which words he used were "bias language". Can you back that up or was that only what someone told you?

  • wow amazing footage, thanks for posting.

where can i get a HD version or dvd/vhs?

  • Wow Commiespeack! Journalist murdered us! I hope your children DIE Englishman

  • @brokendownhoarse. I looked this journalist up and he is a American born in the bronx, he's not English.

  • @kingsman1066

He signs off with "bob simon, cbs news, on route 1". He is with 60 min now.

That brokedown dummass wouldn't know or care to hear the facts.

  • @brokendownhoarse. I looked this journalist up and he is an American born in the bronx, he's not English.

  • @brokendownhoarse, Sorry mate he's an American, born in the Bronx.

  • @kingsman1066 He sure as shit don't sound like he's from the Bronx so I can understand the mix up.

  • @brokendownhoarse

Thanks for looking like a dumb ass when representing this side of the argument.

  • Thank you for posting.

Brutal stuff - I wish our 'war coverage' was as honest these days as this footage was. Perhaps then our politicians and general public would be less gung-ho about going to war.

  • @weemoby The problem is that we now know that much reporting from Vietnam wasn't honest - many journalists worked to their own agenda or to a demand from elsewhere for headline stories playing to particular themes.

  • @weemoby The problem is that we now know that much reporting from Vietnam wasn't honest - many journalists worked to their own agenda or to a demand from elsewhere for headline stories playing to particular themes.

  • @weemoby Tell me what is so dishonest about today's war coverage? I've yet to catch the CNN reporters in a lie. They just tell it like it is.

  • @ArabsStank

    Lies by omission fool.

  • @weemoby Restrepo did a good job of war coverage

  • @weemoby dude, the 60's was technically the most free'est' time in this country in a way because of te movements and the anti government people and such, plus war coverage was waaaaaaaaay more open than it is now, people sta at home and watched war footage of people being blown to pieces like their evenining show, thats what started movements

  • @weemoby No offense, but are you crazy? I strongly doubt that the consensus among Americans about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could be considered gung-ho. I would venture to say that a lot of Americans have become somewhat jaded and defeated by the whole entire thing (the wars right now I mean).

  • @Citadel20

I guess he meant that the feelings of 2001 and 2003 were gung-ho. That many Americans changed their minds later on doesn't change the fact that most supported war.

  • @weemoby War isn't good for any side, least of all for the soldiers doing the actual fighting. Ironically, it's because of the honesty and openness in the coverage of the Vietnam War and the public backlash against the war by Americans, why all the later wars the U.S. was involved in were heavily censored by the government, and even worse, the corporate media obliged, playing more like cheerleaders than journalists.

  • @weemoby Footage was good, narrative was disingenous. Reporter snide remark how they said the fighting was contained but no one told the NVA, sarcastic at best. These were local militia against the NVA, seems like there were doing pretty well. Ran back with prizes. A rocket launcher and AK taken from the enemy in the middle of a battle ensures it won't be used again. Sounded like a company but were only a couple of platoons. NVA company 100, platoon 30, two platoons 60. The reporters an idiot.

  • @weemoby Very honest account of war.

  • @weemoby Good point, but this happens to be the war they learned never to let journalists get the true story again. Now there is a complete media shut out and all you see is what they want you to see. I live in the Middle East and we see everything regarding the Middle East, the bodies, the death, the wars, the torture pictures without being blacked out; this is why America has no clue what is going on. Impeded journalists are a joke. Al Jazeera was firs American target.

  • @zeeab BTY I'm not saying that the same thing doesnt happen here, but just in regards to America and the war.

  • the vietnamese soldiers were saying "he's dead! he's dead!" after their volley when they saw an NVA soldier run out in the open.

these soldiers were from the middle region of Vietnam because I recogniz the accent.

  • Back then the war censorchip was aparently an uncnown thing...

  • that was graffic

  • wow that baby crying made my stumach turn

  • @brucekirk89

    War is fucked...

  • @kankaroo Precisely why I uploaded this video there is no honour, glory in war its brutal and bloody.

  • @kankaroo War is fucking cool, otherwise no one would participate.
