Good point ... I chose that photo because it was recognisably Mount Everest, but you're right. The calculations were done using the height above see level.
Fantastic lecture. A note: the Mount Everest segment is a bit misleading, because it uses Everest's height above sea level for the house/man/building comparison, while the picture he shows next to the house is one of Everest starting at around 6,000 meters (Everest is around 29,029 feet / 8,848 meters above sea level). A fairer depiction would shrink the picture so that it starts somewhere around the bottom of that triangular window near the top of the house (which still makes it humongous).
