No need to jump to conclusions. I had a cat when young who was backed into a corner by some pretty vicious dogs soon after birth, she was a very nasty cat to everyone bar my mum.
When taken to the vet she would scratch/hiss/bite at any who came within reach and had to be sedated and her paws bandaged. When my mum would walk in the room she would purr and mew, they could not believe it was the same cat.
On the plus side, she made a great guard cat, often chasing large dogs from our property=)
Cats have issues just as people do, and while I don't know the story here it is not unusual to find a healthy and well treated cat in need of an attitude adjustment - some cats are just plain mean =)
