listen to this song on your ipod while u walk down a crowded street, when i do that i feel tingles on the top of my head, and i feel like i am in the matrix. :D
man this is soooo effing amazing. Here I was dozing and this came in blowing me up and waking me up....thank you for putting these great masters together to a great mix. PEY!
Alcohol and Zen? Sounds like a proper function of Yin and Yang to me.
A wise person's words don't fall short because of their imperfections, everyone has there own "something" to deal with. What's easy for others can be astonishingly difficult for someone else, regardless of enlightenment. The crooked arrow finds glory within its target! Watt's words have removed suffering from so many people.
"There is no such thing as a weird person, some people simply require more understanding."
Holy crap I have to comment about this.... to all you people bringing up Alan Watts' alcoholism. GET OVER YOURSELVES. Did you not listen to a single word this man has said?
very well put together. keep making this kind of stuff. its good for humanity to put these kind of concepts into practice so that they can begin to take individual delight in the world as it actually is
Regarding the alcohol dilemma, maybe each of them was an expert on suffering ... I studied Zen for a few years, formally, only to find the teacher was sleeping with students in the dokusan room. When the present manifests itself as an alluring bottle or a young woman, how will you communicate with THAT?
All in all, I say learn what you can from teachers, but don't think for a second they're "perfect," a mindtrip in itself ... and this audio-mix/video are great!
your grandpa? he probably told you a hundred things but how many were true? and how many was he able to practice? i have never met a human who was living in the present. i would like to. it would be facinating.
alan watts was a great teacher. most of us, unfortunately, are poor students. i never met watts. maybe he was a poor student also.
Both of these 'wise' men had something in common, they drank themselves to an early death. They didn't deal with the fact they were alcoholics. To face up to this fact you need to be in the present, blaming no one, but accepting reality. It is a real death to the ego, a surrendering to the truth. Watts had the head knowledge but what he really grasped and applied to his personal life is questionable. " Such wisdom, you can't live in the past. Your dumbass grandpa told you that much.
@muhrvis Instead of saying yes or no and crawling into that shoebox let me try again. I've worked a good deal with alcoholics. They are very destructive to self and others and there is a good deal of lies, denial, they must create to continue practicing their addiction. It is a very ego centered existance, & it is a very difficult disease to deal with. Neither man dealt with it, they drank themselves to death. Living in the moment usually translates to living out of the ego. Connect the dots.
@Paahau Thank you kindly for the reply! I too am unfortunately very familiar with alcohol addicts. I hear you completely about the fact that such an existence tends to be ego-centered and not likely to lead to "liberation." It is a deep pattern and not just a simple "choice." Certainly, the more one is free from ego-centered regret, fear, and anxiety, the more likely one might be "good" in the conventional sense, but it would be a mistake to tie "ego liberation" to specific worldly behaviors.
@muhrvis P.S.: Perhaps I let their alcoholism & other addictions get too much in my way of appreciating the work these men have done. I just get hung up on the notion your walk and talk should match. What would be the reaction if they were Christian leaders who were drinking themselves to death & screwing the congregation, openly?
@Paahau Yes, I hear you again! I do as well fail to appreciate apparent hypocrisy. I'd probably personally come down harder on the Christians, for *they* are upholders of "conventional morality" who are always insisting that others behave a certain way. But yes, I agree with you that Trungpa and Watts, like any philosopher who talks about morals, must be called on the carpet if they are not exhibiting the compassion for others and themselves that is such an important part of their philosophies.
Somebody help me. I think the message(s) in this video are worthwhile. However, I am troubled by the fact that the two teachers in this video both died from the results of alcoholism.
@wuwei37405 would you rather they have died from breathing air too long?... my point is that we all die... one who dies from alcoholism is no less of a man than one who does not... it's just different... but in the end it's the same... the are both dead.
interesting that a man like Chogyam Trungpa who was so conscious, a world figure, died of alcoholism genrally associated with not wanting to face it .... I don't know the specifics of his story but his end is a mystery.
Alan Watts wasn't without his problems. Namely that he help many views that were mystical. If only he would've applied the view of the here and now to every aspect of his life.
It is said that Alan Watts ended up a pathetic drung. When asked why the Vodka a day thing, would say that he hated himself and could no longer stand being Alan Watts! Its shocking, he seemed so at peace with himself didn't he?
If Alan Watts was taking Peyote to escape from himself at the end of his life I don't think many people would be calling him pathetic. That has more to do with the cultural biases people have about alcohol as a drug. There's a fine line between genius and madness & I think Watts was aware that there's also a fine line between a drunk and a mystic. Calling out Watts like this is like saying an interesting and beautiful piece of music is invalid because you don't like how it ends.
See also Eckhart Tolle, The Power of Now (2004). When you look at the spiritual evolution of humanity, you see that the oldest of cultures were teaching the doctrine of BE NOW, such as Tantra in India. Tantra reigned very long, but today we have Vedanta, which is relatively short-lived, and teaches tradition, adherence to gurus, and thereby, complying with the past. Krishnamurti's teaching is and remains the most revolutionary in that it says, tradition, thought, established ideas are the past.
if youbelieve in reincarnation, life makes in some cases more sense. although it is difficult to prove the existence, the phylosophical thinking of reincarnation gives life a sense. its training. the earth is a training program for the soul.
@wapi6 reincarnation is not to be taken literally. it is merely a clever explanation of changes in the world around us. it is an early metaphysical quantum theory.
Nice video!

To live in the now.
I could "live in the future" only in imagination. And I could "live in the past" only through memory. Both are being observed from the now.
Remembering a time I was remembering me remembering a memory, I could do that. But That would still be one moment I'm remembering.
I could also imagine me imagining me imagining I'm imagining. And so on.
It all stems from me being in a default state of now.
Words for the sake of words. This was like reminding people they have organs.

Cool Music........who is it? Why are we "threatened by the now"?
Otevra13 2 years ago
Because it can be hard to deal with.
No matter how hard the past may have been, or the future will be, we get to deal with it through the filter of time.
There is no such filter for "the now."
