  • 楽団は今一つです。辻井さんはこの楽団にもったいないぐらい!非­常に難しいこの協奏曲を引けるものが少ないですが、辻井さんはそ­の一人。素晴らしい!!!

  • Phenomenal! I'm a former member of the board of directors of the Van Cliburn institute. I left the board a couple of years ago. I WISH I had stayed, just to watch this final. Incredible enough that he played this concerto flawlessly. Utterly astonishing that he learned it by ear. If you don't believe there is a God after watching this, you're beyond hope.

  • @wlvincent I want to take this opportunity to thank the 2009 Van Cliburn Competition jury. What acumen and courage they displayed to award Nobu with the highest honor, perhaps knowing that it would be controversial. Time has proven them right, and I am ever so grateful.

  • I still remember this from summer of 2009... I was falling asleep after listening to all of the artists perform, and then Nobu started playing this concerto, I sat up and started tearing uncontrollably. The little mishap at the very beginning, let's just say I had no idea that even happened.

  • No eye-contacts and maybe language barriors during preparations... The lack of communications might have led them into some confusion at the beginning.  But, soon, they could have communicated through music and could have overcome the difficulties!! And, finally, they created this wonderful performance. The odd beginning is not so bad and not to be blamed. It tells us the great power of music!!

  • That he can play Rachmaninoff this good is phenomenal. That he can play it BLIND absolutely staggers the imagination. A testament to what gifted people can accomplish when the odds are stacked against them.

  • @JoeTownley Nobuyuki Tsujii is phenomenally gifted, even if he were not blind. I think we are all fortunate to live in a time when we can witness his miracle. He is especially sensational performing live with ANY -- repeat, any -- orchestra.  -- "nofufans" site owner

    しかし指揮者はそれを無視してテンポを修正した。辻井さんが妥協­してようやくコンチェルトが成立した格好だ。

    速いか遅いか、それがいいか悪いかは審査員が決めることであって­、指揮者が決めることではない。そんなことは誰でも知っている。

    だが中盤以降は、いい演奏になっていると誰もが感じると思う。そ­れは辻井さんがコンチェルトを創り出したからである。それが一番­大事なことなのだ。

  • この指揮者は辻井さんの演奏に敬意を持って他の奏者と同じように­対応していると感じます。コンクールはいい演奏を求めているので­はなく、いい奏者を決める大会かと素人ながらに感じています。そ­ういう意味では辻井さんには曲の入りはハンディキャップですね。­でも、その後の演奏は私には見事と思えます。

  • @Jamesdude2000 wow, Nobu is my personal favorite as well, but i in no way resent any of the other contestants that participated, not to mention personal attacks. Cliburn is not a joke competition. if you are a student like i am, make sure you are improving your mannerism along with your musicianship. yes, it matters.

  • @fuchion15 Oh disregard that comment I think I was drunk, but it is true that I hugely disagree with the fundamental principles of these competitions, always choosing showmanship over musicianship, choosing pieces just based on popularity and technical difficulty and never seeming to apply any kind of historical context or appreciation for the artistic message of a work. It gives the general public a completely skewed view of classical music.

    これが、「俺の音楽だ」という強い意志がなければ、世界的な人物­には到底なれない。

    そういう、力づくでもオケを従わせようという我の強さを試したん­じゃない?

  • It is now May 1, 2011. Since this performance, Nobu has performed this concerto at least 8 times with 4 different conductors and 4 different orchestras, on three different continents - no problem with any of them. He just wowed the audiences in Edmonton, Canada, with two performances of the Rach 2 with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and Conductor Jean-Marie Zeitouni.

  • I've worked for the Van Cliburn Foundation, and I can say putting the orchestra up on the video is a violation. The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra is a union that does not get paid for online views. I hope you don't get into legal troubles.

  • one more time: conlon did not make ANY mistakes. orchestra was playing perfectly. nobu fell behind because he as a blind person had no eye contact with conlon and conlon at that time couldn't do anything about it. nobody probably would. both of them only deserving praise for coming out clean at the end and continuing with a great performance!

  • @korglove well, nobu started infact with a slower tempo than the orchestra. Listen to onbus bass notes and then keep counting when the orchestra bass sets in. But whatever, great performance after that.

  • and i love nobu. so it is nobody's fault. just happened that way. nobu still got first prize, so the case should be closed. conlon is a great conductor and nobu is a great god given pianist. stop making a scapegoat out of conlon.

  • stop blaming conlon all you "music specialists". give him a break. if anyone of you know how to count in 2 or in 4 please listen to nobu's intro with counting and then continue counting when orchestra enters, and then you'll see who is off and who is not. conlon was playing in the tempo nobu gave him. nobu unfortunately derailed bafter orchestra entered. he probably got scared a bit. maybe a bit confused and lost a beat for a short while. and felt behind. but at the end he caught up.

  • On second viewing, THE ORCHESTRA IS AT FAULT EQUALLY. They simply don't know the piece. IT IS THEY THAT ALSO SHOULD BE FIRED. All of those string players. How dare they not listen to the pianist. They don't even know the piece. Why would they all of a sudden plow ahead at full speed? They were used to someone else's faster tempo perhaps. SHAME ON THOSE PLAYERS. It was not Conlon's fault, as much as I would like to think so. I've never seen a more inept group of hacks. That was criminal.

  • @goodguysdoll It IS weird what happened. This orchestra WANTED Nobu to win (one of them wrote to a newspaper mentioning such), and you can see a video of Conlon rehearsing with Nobu that shows that he was blown away by his playing. There is an article that came out after this performance that says Nobu was nonplussed by what happened, but I think the fact that he prevailed might have actually scored with the jury. Read the article on my "nobufans" site, if you like.

  • @mlliu2006 Nobu is such a marvelous musician that I would have been surprised if he hadn't prevailed. He knows - the SOLOIST is in charge - not the conductor, not the orchestra. I believe the orchestra was trying to follow him and I am completely flabbergasted at Conlon - he wasn't keeping any kind of tempo in the beginning!

    @goodguysdoll - I hate to be snobbish, but this is the FORT WORTH TX orchestra...maybe Van Cliburn should consider using a world-class orchestra for this competition?

  • @bevsoprano I think it's a tall order for any orchestra to be asked to do what the Cliburn Competition requires of it - 6X2 performances in 3 days with 6 different pianists. I have the utmost respect for the FWO, and if you look at a photo at the end of Nobu's performance, you can vividly see the goodwill on the faces of people in the orchestra (get a link to my nobufans site from the description of my "Raindrop Prelude" video, and look at the pic on the "A Miracle at the Cliburn" page.)

  • @mlliu2006 Absolutely - I like the orchestra, esp. the string section - beautiful, lush sound. My complaint is the conductor. Perhaps they should consider guest conductors for the Van Cliburn? This competition IS a tall order for any orchestra, but there are orchestras as good as FWO with better conductors. I think Conlon's intentions were good; he obviously made a huge mistake, though, and that shouldn't happen.

  • @bevsoprano Actually, I think Conlon is no longer the director of the FWO - I just looked at the orchestra's site and also Conlon's own site. Colon is now the director of the Los Angeles Opera, and he continues to be a director of the Ravinia Music Festival. The director of the FWO is now Miguel Harth-Bedoya.

  • @bevsoprano: The conductor is at fault and misled the orchestra at the beginning. Remember the orchestra is the accompaniment. It must listen to the soloist. Nobu was correct and the conductor was wrong and erratic in his behaviour. This is all the more proven, since in all of the other performances, Nobu had no tempo problems with any other conductor. I am glad that they did not penalize Nobu for the conductor's error in judgement.

  • CONLON SHOULD RESIGN AS CONDUCTOR IMMEDIATELY. That was just criminal. He has no clarity of beat, and the orchestra was completely torn between what he was beating and what they were hearing. SHAME ON HIM for not going with the tempo of the pianist. And SHAME ON THE ORCHESTRA too for not just listening to the pianist better. The tempo could not have been clearer. If this were the contest itself, the pianist would have indeed gotten no medal at all, all because of CON-MAN.

  • Nobuyuki Tsujii will perform Rachmaninoff Concerto Number 2 in Japan, England, and Canada in March-April 2011. Google "nobufans" for a site that has a full list of his concerts in early 2011.

James Colon and the Fort Worth Orchestra are probably getting a little payback from Tsujii with some revenue coming from the sales of the Chopin Concerto No. 1 recording of Nobuyuki's performance - I understand that the CD has sold quite well by the standard of classical music.

  • Nobuyuki Tsujii is scheduled to play this concerto (Rach 2) with conductor Yutaka Sado and the BBC Orchestra in at least 9 concerts throughout March of 2011. I heard from a contact in Japan that you have to put your name into a lottery in order to have a chance get tickets!

  • It seems to me however, that the conductor Conlon meant to show that the soloist CANNOT catch up because he cannt see. So in other words Conlon seems to be saying: hey guys do you see, the pianist is blind.

    I am glad to see that the videos are posted and the conductor's idiotic action goes beyond his times.

    COME ON GUYS: this pianist produces such clear impulses, that you have to be TOTAL DEAF, and with ABSOLUTE NO SENSITIVITY, to missread him.

  • So glad tha the internet today, make it possible for the world to see how Conlon, is either too bad (cannot hear what we all hear, or incapable of beating accordingly), or too arrogant (although hearing the same as we all hear, and having the capacity to conduct accordingly, he conducted just in a way that the pianist can only follow if he sees). And it is so nice that we can leave these messages.

  • I don't even think the problem is with the tempo.  It sounds to me like the orchestra is not playing the correct rhythm in the beginning--they're playing the dotted half notes as plain half notes, which is why they keep getting ahead of the pianist. You'd think they'd be a bit more prepared...

  • @lacrymosa85 If you watch the documentarty "A Surprise in Texas" you will come to see this in a different light. Conductor Conlon actually went out of his way to help, practicing the piano himself on some parts of Nobu's concertos. One problem that he faced is that Bulgarian competitor Evgeni Bozhanov chose to play the very same concertos as Tsujii and he wants it FAST, while Nobyuki plays it much slower.

  • I love how the piano justs melts into the orchestra - I have never heard so much tenderness in any other rendition of this concerto...

  • Can't take anything away from the incredible ability to play at this level blind. But, I do find the playing somewhat controlled and reserved. This is probably due to the fact that he his playing has evolved this way for the precise reason that he can't actually see so there is always a sort of built in control element.

  • Obwohl das depperte Orchester und Dirigent direkt am Anfang den Solist quasi "mobben" mit dem aroganten Tempo mit den Melodie, blieb der Meister, Nubuyuki Tsujii, cool und treu seiner Musik. Er hat sich dadurch nicht irritieren lassen!! Das ist der wahre Meister!!!!!

  • The orchestra is too fast in the beginning and they keep getting ahead of the pianist. Even the intervention of the conductor didnt do much. You can see that the conductor is trying from the first beat. It's just a mishap, it doesn't matter. But they should be even more attentive when they are playing with a pianist like this. Great performance though.

  • @mialtin Although the orchestra is too fast, from memory, the orchestra's speed is the right speed according to Rach himself. But I think Nobuyuki's speed is better, the correct speed to me is a little rushed...  That's just my 2 cents.

  • the bass notes of each phrase have accents in this case. the upper notes are played with intensity too. You will maybe find a general low intensity of base stuff in this recording, so you might rethink your opinion on accents ^^

  • @mialtin you are very right. orchestra and conductor doesn't hear the pianist. Nobuyuki must play with accent on his Bass note just for getting syncrone with spupid orchestra!!!
