From what I hear, Muhammad did not love dogs, but hated them, and Muslims shun dogs in imitation. Dogs are not to be kept except through necessity,and not to be touched during ramadan. @UBeeware Not true. There are differences between religions. There are artificial cults which take pre-existing religious concepts and create a new cult from them: Islam and Mormonism. And there are traditional tribal religions which emerge much more slowly and have less of a chance to be the creation of a single manipulative charlatan. I always thought it was amusing that Muhammad didn't know the name of his god when he first started. He tried Al Rahman at first, but that didn't go over to well in Mecca. He finally settled on Allah, which the Quarysh knew very well as the Moon god. Allah is actually a cognative of the chief god of the Canaanites, El who was later co-opted into Yahweh.

Re: Judeo/Christian afterlife: There are several psalms, and psalms attributed to David which speak of the afterlife, and Living forever in the Kingdom of God. Chronologically, man. Daniel occurs during the exile to Babylon which is after the Books of Samuel and Kings, in which the reign or David is said to occur. Ecclesiastics is attributed to Solomon, son of David, but even if it is not Solomon, the Book references a King of Israel as the author, and the Kingship was dissolved by the Babylonian conquest. Job is also a book that predates this event.

The entire Old Testament could have been written in as little as a month during the exile period, there was means, motive and opportunity.

Many scholars date Ecclesiastes as around mid third century BC, well after the Babylonian captivity, it contains influences from Aramaic and Persian - the language of those who ended the Babylonian captivity.

I know exactly what you mean. My first draft accepted the Islamic line about women in the way of a concession, arguing every little point looks like your entire case is made up of trivia. It can often be better to grant lots of concessions and then attack only at the strongest point and destroy the entire argument without leaving any points to quibble about. I was referring to people, not foreigners. To a Jew the distinction is clear, unless foreigners are specifically included descriptions of people only refer to Jews. No Jews believed in an afterlife of any kind until the period of the exile, where they pick up many new concepts: an evil one, life after death, godly reward and punishment beyond long life, health and wealth, and holy figures with multiple animal heads.

I am not sure. It might be an invention by Muhammad but I think I recall some mention of Byzantine Christians giving a special status to Jews and this gave him the idea. It has also been suggested that the idea comes from the Sassanids (an empire based on Persia) which used forms of limited religious toleration. From what I hear, Muhammad did not love dogs, but hated them, and Muslims shun dogs in imitation. Dogs are not to be kept except through necessity,and not to be touched during ramadan. Muhammad apparently claimed that an angel can't enter a room with a dog in it (which is technically true as there are no angels) and also ordered the killing of all black dogs in the city. However he was supposedly a cat lover, and cut the sleeve off his coat rather than disturb a pet cat that was sleeping on it.

@UBeeware Not true. There are differences between religions. There are artificial cults which take pre-existing religious concepts and create a new cult from them: Islam and Mormonism. And there are traditional tribal religions which emerge much more slowly and have less of a chance to be the creation of a single manipulative charlatan. Christianity is in between, it was clearly not the invention of a single person like Islam but it is also clearly created in an easily defined time period.

I always thought it was amusing that Muhammad didn't know the name of his god when he first started. He tried Al Rahman at first, but that didn't go over to well in Mecca. He finally settled on Allah, which the Quarysh knew very well as the Moon god. Allah is actually a cognative of the chief god of the Canaanites, El who was later co-opted into Yahweh.
You're right, almost all of Islam is stolen from other religions. That's why it offers no new moral concepts.

That might be so in some points, in others is the author mistaken. But for certain: All the other cultures, wether monotheistic or not, were able to develop and to reject these practices. The 'violent' verses in the Quran are regarding specific moments of time when the Muslims were persecuted in Mecca and Medina. War in Islam should be from self defence.

Oppression is considered worse than death as mentioned in a verse in the Quran in case you didn't know. Whether the oppressed people are non-Muslims or Muslims, it is the duty of people who have the power to end any form of oppression. The whole 'women are oppressed issue' is something I look at through teaching not through the shit we see today. In regards to mutilation and theft, if the thief apologizes for his misdeed and manages to pay back what the victim lost then he is free of punishment.

Also, the concept of Sheol, a Hades-like Netherworld can be traced back to Ecclesiastics and Job, both of which pre-date Daniel by hundreds of years.

Chronologically, man. Daniel occurs during the exile to Babylon which is after the Books of Samuel and Kings, in which the reign or David is said to occur. Ecclesiastics is attributed to Solomon, son of David, but even if it is not Solomon, the Book references a King of Israel as the author, and the Kingship was dissolved by the Babylonian conquest. Job is also a book that predates this event.

Sheol may also mean literally "the grave"

Evidence from claims in the text itself. If that's evidence so is the faked signature on a faked nine dollar bill. What real evidence is there that those books existed before the exile? The entire Old Testament could have been written in as little as a month during the exile period, there was means, motive and opportunity.

I did not say it was written after the exile I asked you to show evidence that it was written BEFORE the exile. You made the claim that it was and you offered no evidence other than a claim based on the text itself. I don't know when it was written, I wasn't there. All I do know is that when I read the Bible in sequence I got the very strong impression that nobody until the very latest books *which themselves describe the exile period* have any hint of life after death.

I already gave you that proof. The Line of Kings of Israel was removed by the Babylonians. The only way the book could be written by a king of Israel is if it took place before the exile.

Many scholars date Ecclesiastes as around mid third century BC, well after the Babylonian captivity, it contains influences from Aramaic and Persian - the language of those who ended the Babylonian captivity.

I know exactly what you mean. My first draft accepted the Islamic line about women in the way of a concession, arguing every little point looks like your entire case is made up of trivia. It can often be better to grant lots of concessions and then attack only at the strongest point and destroy the entire argument without leaving any points to quibble about. The later version (on my website) does not make such a big concession on the claim of improvements for women.

I was referring to people, not foreigners. To a Jew the distinction is clear, unless foreigners are specifically included descriptions of people only refer to Jews. No Jews believed in an afterlife of any kind until the period of the exile, where they pick up many new concepts: an evil one, life after death, godly reward and punishment beyond long life, health and wealth, and holy figures with multiple animal heads.

Another theory (based on Bukhari etc) is he died from the long term affects of poisoning three years earlier by Jewish women in Khaibar after he attacked them (purely for yet more theft, loot & to capture woman as "booty").

Various moon & star signs occurred throughout the ancient world but it's popular to suppose the combined crescent moon & star motif was "acquired" by Turks in 1453 when they captured & plundered Constantinople, however even this theory may be incorrect.

Again don't use these silly titles to connote something negative. It's highly farcical to suggest he was a "slave trader". Slavery was a somewhat established form of currency in that given society so to suggest he in some way sought any profit from this is ludicrous. Using the concept of gradualism he removed the incentive of having slaves and setting very restrictive guidelines which made the possession of one undesirable.

The same reason he didn't ban alcohol out right. When one aims to change an entire system of life as he intended, you cannot build a following based on immediate commandments. For instance take a crack addict, if you want to treat that individual would you immediately take the drugs from them or do you gradually ween them off it?. Slavery was an entrenched part of that society, he slowly and incrementally eradicated it.

Muslims have freely traded slaves following the example of Muhammad himself. The Atlantic slave trade began when the Portuguese bought black slaves from Muslims to take to the Cape Verde Islands. Most of the slaves which crossed the Atlantic were captured and sold by Muslims.

I am not sure. It might be an invention by Muhammad but I think I recall some mention of Byzantine Christians giving a special status to Jews and this gave him the idea. It has also been suggested that the idea comes from the Sassanids (an empire based on Persia) which used forms of limited religious toleration. The Sassanid empire contributed many ideas which are claimed to have been part of the much over-hyped Islamic golden age.

It is not difficult. The Qur'an was recited and memorized, it was a very oral culture, Muhammad would no doubt have been quite proficient at recalling information he had heard his trading partners and companions tell. As I pointed out it is rather absurd to imagine that the man was stupid or slow-witted just because he could not write, the man showed clear leadership skills, he was not stupid. Joseph Smith also managed to produce lots of orally transmitted scripture in a similar way.
