I think the writers didn't know how else to break her and Aidan up, since, based on the show's structure and general plot, she was "destined" to be with Big. Honestly, Carrie's kind of high maintenance and Big fits in with her lifestyle better...once he learned not to take her for granted. Plus, Carrie cheating on Aidan, Steve cheating on Miranda...all shows how good, non-player people have weaknesses, too. :/

That said, if I ever found someone like Aidan, I would never let him go. ;) ;)
