  • ... Fencing

  • @Irmasterlol: I both fence and practice practical medieval combat, I gotta tell ya that horizontal movements never gave me much trouble. Fencing

  • You're a OK fighter in this video.

  • thanks a lot guys im from australia and have no pressing desire or plans to live in any of the possible three cities that have HEMA clubs so ill have to settle for outside practice while i wait for it to spread a little more. i was just worried about having to unlearn habits or whatnot but since a lot of practitioners seem to have had prior experience in something else anyway...

    thanks again

  • i have no prior experience in martial arts but im really interested in getting into HEMA, particularly the use of a shield. unfortunately there are no clubs/schools in my area that cater for it other than a fencing club. the club teaches foils, epee and/or sabers would that be a good place to start or is this sort of thing not really compatible? just looking for advice from people with experience

  • @forthwalled The club you mentioned is most likely a sport fencing club, and it will certainly be better than nothing. I do sport fencing as opposed to this type, but as far as I can tell, using epee rules and sabre attack technique will put you in a position to quickly learn the rest of the recreation fencing. moving in a plane instead of a line is the largest change I see.

  • @Irmasterlol

There's also differences in footwork and general fighting mentalities to get over as well. (For example, most ex-sport fencers new to KdF rely far too much on linear foyning footwork, zufechten range and dui-tempo.) I did the sabre fencing to KdF path, and I must say that the biggest (and pretty much only real) advantages that gave me was the basic knowledge of applying what I learn to drilling footwork, bladework, etc.

Although some of the epee/foil stuff CAN be of some use.

  • @forthwalled Hi there, any good martial art will prepare you for HEMA to some degree. If there is no HEMA around, then a background in any the following will help: wrestling, fencing, kendo, kenjutusu, iaido, jujutsu, and judo. Other arts might be helpful as well. Even an MMA club will give you a lot of tools to help you develop as a HEMA practicioner.

  • Woher habt ihr des Messer und den Säbel ? Will mir auch holen

  • @rasafin trainigsschwerter de

  • ok, but where`s the saber ?

all i can see is a kind of broadsword, but no saber - neither blade is even slightly curved in shape

  • @mrcraftsmann Yea your right but im guessing the sabre is the one with the enclosed hanguard

  • @mrcraftsmann Yes, you are right, that is not the correct description, we train scottish broadsword, but its use is very similar to the saber, some manuals are used for broadsword, saber and spadroon, even the cutlass exercise is similar to it.

  • Diese Kombination ist richtig geil. Hätte historisch sogar aufeinandertreffen können.

Schön anzusehen und gute Techniken. ^^

  • This was a good fight!

  • One suggestion. You could cut out some leather to wear to protect the torso. The leather/hide could be light and offer some protection against a trust by a blunt saber or sword.

  • @bigfatfoot ^ Which hurts a LOT.
