Holladay
Lincecum
Strasburg
If Cuba had them, fuck they'd destroy Japan in the WBC, all we got is guys U find in the street N UR like, ayo U can throw a ball? Alrite UR on the team
your right i bet he will be a yankee and that is what is wrong with baseball,if they dont stop letting the yankees buy championships everyyear people will stop watching the games if you look at the ticket sales i think it has already started
As an avid college baseball fan, I think this guy is overrated. He's a great pitcher, but no where no 1 pick caliber pitcher. He pitched in a weak conference and when he pitched against powerhouse teams he was sub-par. A no hitter against Air Force, c'mon, one of the worst D1 college programs.
bro im one of the biggest sports fans out there u dont think i know that???....note the quotation marks over BCS......im talking about the major conferences dumbass.....ACC, PAC-10, BIG 12, BIG 10, SEC, & BIG EAST.
i'm a dumbass but u said BCS and u was talkin about baseball and i can careless if u was a big sports fan or not u still made a mistake so u must not be that big of a fan
i was implying bcs as meaning the MAJOR conference teams dude can you not read? lol....point is i wanna see pitch against the big schools on an every week basis before some of these scouts call him "the greatest pitching propect ever" lol
If this guy doesn't get injured and keeps up the heat, he could be the greatest pitcher of all time...102 mph (which will likely get faster, as he is only 20 years old), pinpoint accuracy, and a curve ball that is possibly better than his fasball...He's almost unreal.
LOL i wish he'd stay in San Diego. If we could have only dropped a few more games we could have had #1 draft pick. But the Padres don't deal with scott boras and would never pony up the cash to get him, even if he did take a San Diego discount. Gwynn needs to convince him to save his soul fire Scott Boras.
he's a beast, but his arm won't last if he keeps throwing that hard. I can't imagine the stress on his elbow. If he became a closer in the league, however, he could be legendary.
It's not how hard he throws it, it's about how hard he TRIES to throw it. If he can naturally throw hard, and his mechanics are fine, he'll last as long as anyone else. Give or take a few years.
Yes but we were just talking about how his arm would hold up... regardless of how many he walks, pitch count is something invented by "new age" pitching theorists in order to justify inning limitations on young pitchers and thus prolonging their entrance into free agency.
Well, many pitchers throw at their maximum speeds at a high pitch count. The speed isn't the reason they stop-it's the accuracy. They let the ball hang over the plate, or, as is likely the case with Nolan Ryan, they walk more people. Pitchers today are just as capable of throwing 200 pitches; the difference is managers now use relievers more, which is probably best, because hitters these days are better than those during Ryan's days. So I was, in fact, talking about how hsi arm would hold up.
Your still missing the point of this entire argument. The amount of people he walks, or the amount of batters he faces, is arbitrary. All we're talking about here is the number of pitches thrown, and since by your own admission he won't be throwing as many as say a Nolan Ryan did, his career shouldn't face any speed bumps in terms of arm trouble.
Ah, yes. Quite honestly, I didn't read any of the previous comments; I was merely making a claim. Anyway, I don't actually think that just because Nolan Ryan could remain healthy means that this guy will. Nolan Ryan, although an above average pitcher at best, had the unique ability to pitch consistently throughout his career, practically injury free. I really hope Srasburg does the same, as he can potentially be the greatest ever...but the odds are that he will get hurt and become mediocre.
Well the odds really don't matter in this case. The talent Strasburg possess hasn't been seen in quite some time... in fact, I would argue he's the first of his kind.
PS, I agree 100% that Nolan Ryan was above average at best, I would argue he's the most overrated pitcher who ever lived.
I think 200 is a high number, maybe 140-150s. Most complete games nowadays (that are real battles - like Sabathia's highest complete games) are around there. I'd think if a pitcher threw 200, they're throwing 6-8 to each hitter... Either those hitters are really good, or hes giving up too many runs, or too many balls..
Strasburg will never, ever reach that pitch count in a ball game. Any team that signs him will protect that investment which will be in the hundred-million range or higher. If he throws 120 pitches or more it will be later in his career or if he's on a short term contract. It's not ability, it's economics.
go tell kerry wood and mark prior about how many pitches nolan ryan used to throw. any extra innings you get out of an elite young starter will be more than paid for later when they're on the DL or missing the season after getting surgery.
uhhh....they're not that fat when they are in the upper 90's and 100+... Not only that, but he has a fastball that has plenty of movement, along with a devastating curveball. Yeah...some players will get to him from time to time, but you forget that he's only 20...he's still improving...the kid has hit 102 mph in '09...over 7 times in the game against Nevada! Some say 103...AT 20 yrs. old!
ok dumbass, the best pitch in baseball is and will always be a well placed fastball, let alone a 103 mph one, this dude has control too, and thats whats scary, hes not mark wholers, and its not like his offspeed stuff isnt sick too, his curve/slider at 86 drops off a table, barring injury this guy will be an allstar for many many years, i just hope he manages to remain a starter and doesnt move to closer, but history shows he might make a move to the pen in the future
I was there!!!!!!

Yeah, Well, You guys can have him! Someday he'll be playing for the Yankees!
Probably 15 years from now, with two broken arms, and a $424 Million contract, he'll be a Yankee. Oh yeah!
*Cries*
What I wouldn't give for this kid to be in our farm system. Hell, he could take over for Pettite next year, if he's as good as they say.

Nolan Ryan never had arm trouble, and he threw upwards of 200pitches each game, and 90% of those were 98-100mph heaters.
npdom15 2 years ago
Yeah, but half of those pitches were balls. He would regularly walk nearly 200 batters per season.

Yes but we were just talking about how his arm would hold up... regardless of how many he walks, pitch count is something invented by "new age" pitching theorists in order to justify inning limitations on young pitchers and thus prolonging their entrance into free agency.
