  • Fatastic effort...I wouldn't even know how to begin playing this!

  • Excellent

  • class playing, nice groove mate

  • great job.......norman is a bass player of all-time greatness.....well played!!

  • You can play the verse line across all four strings - it's a littel easier on the hand, but doesn't sound as clear. You've pretty much got this down.

  • Shit, you're good!

  • Nicely done! Have you tried resting your thumb on each of the strings rather than just the E string? It means your two fingers are less stretched when playing the D and G strings. It's a classical guitar technique. I find it easier especially when playing fluid basslines like this. Checkout my page. I think you might like Genetix if you don't know it already. It's another of my favorites. looking forward to seeing Norman Watt-Roy on tour with The Stranglers in 2011. Keep on jamming!

  • Sweeet!

  • Well played, possibly the best bass line ever written.

  • great bassline well played man

  • Great simplicity, but also quite complex - you nailed that good

  • Brilliant !!!

  • I am pleased that you really appreciate him. It's superb...as is the better-known "Sex & Drugs & Rock 'N' Roll" bass line

  • The 'dogs bolloks' !!!

  • One of the best bass lines ever. Under pressure by bowie and queen takes 1st = :D

  • Hi,

Nice playing man,, but you dont need a video of Norman playing this, just go to a Blockheads Gig and ask him to show you, he is a lovely man who is obsessive about the bass and will talk about it all night I guarantee!

  • Molto bueno excellentissimo! I think Norman Watt-Roy never really got proper credit for his virtuoso playing. He and Charley Charles really underpinned the Blockheads. Anyhow, great playing on this - fan-diddly-dog-tastic.

  • nice 1 normans the dogs b####ks

  • Thanks - you damn right

  • that is a superb effort.i saw him play 2nt.he is still is an awsome player.

  • HI

what type of jazz bass is that ?

  • 73 Jazz with EMG active PUs

  • Fantastic playing.

    Norman is the man.

  • And to..think..that..i thought some of Derek Forbes basslines were tricky! Good effort dude p.s Forbes was the bassist in early period Simple Minds.

  • supercool bassline!!!

  • One large problem there player................The video wasn't on long enough to show your obvious talent further! Excellent job there mate.

  • I'm not a bass player, but this has always been probably my favourite bass line of any song. (Maybe some Chic and Elvis Costello stuff too) I appreciate how tricky it is, so congrats, great job :)

  • I'm not an instrumentalist, but I have always loved this song (I own the EP vinyl version) and I never realized how frakking difficult the bass line is until you demonstrated it. Good job!

  • nice work dude...peace

  • Excellent! Norman would be proud. I got to talk to him a few years ago, and he hinted he didn't make the bass line easy so it's nice to see someone doing it right. Thanks.

  • impressive

  • You play it in a perfect way !!!

  • Watt Roy... Genius!

  • God God, that's a sick bassline.

  • LOL - thanks, I think...

  • Just wanted to say thanks for posting this. I needed to learn this track for a gig tonight that i am depping. I didnt have time to arse around with tabs and yuor video was perfect. Thanks mate, you nailed that track, nice playing.

  • Nice one!

  • We didn't see your face in the video. Are you famous?

  • LOL - No!

  • Yes! You are obviously a virtuoso on the bass, your playing appears to be faultless. To be a Norman though you will have to develop a distictive prancing gate on stage which looks as though you are going to crash into everything (but narrowly miss it all) and sweat enough to float a small ship. Seriously though you are great man, well done!

  • Great comment!!!

  • Fantastic.

  • it's really great bassline..nice one man

  • Nicely played, my friend! Long live Norman. ~vsp

  • Cheers guys!

  • Norman should've got more credit for this bassline when the song was released, whoever mixed it should've made it louder. Seen the band twice, I highly recommend it to anyone. There'll be a new album coming out in the spring by the way, don't forget to buy it! Great job on cracking this fantastic bassline.

  • Fantastic!!

  • Tricky old finger-knotting line, this one. The third bar of the verse is the hard part - I tend to stick to the same position for the whole verse but it means the third bar sounds a little muddy on the low strings. Might give it a bash using your fingering...

  • wow, fanfuckintastic !! I wish I could play so fluidly ...I'll go work on it right away ! thanks man !

  • Wow..that's just amazing to be able to play as good as you do.

  • brilliant.well done

saw the blockheads on thursday in colne

    norman is a legend.

you have done really well on this

    many thanks for posting

  • Hard in SIR!!!I rekon you nailed it.Norman is the gov'nor along with Bernard Edwards (chic)..god rest his soul.Stanley Clark..awesome..but give me the boys any day.

  • Awesome - respect, Dude.

    Keep the faith.

  • Cheers!

  • Spot on that looks really difficult!

  • Cheers! For me, it is!

  • I met Norman at Retrofest earlier this month, and I never really appreciated that bass line until his live performance, so I had to tell him! You've done a great job. Congratulations!

  • Thanks - I'd love to tell him how good he was! The New Boots and Panties album was a big influence on me deciding to pick a bass!

  • I guess you know this but he's on tour all over the UK with the blockheads now - go to theblockheads dot com, and also gigging regularly with Wilko Johnson. see him live if you can!

  • Yeah - I'm gonna try and get to see him next time he's up north!

  • Nice playing ... Norman's bass line is a great study.

    Enjoyed it.

  • nice one mate,those 16ths are a killer,but that was a top job :¬)

  • Excellent job!! that ones a real finger buster.

  • Cheers!

  • exelent fucking brill
