Nizhonigoo da'olzhish....Being a member of the Navajo Nation in the United States I commend you guys for keeping your traditions and culture alive. We,as the First Americans need to retain what once was. Ahee'hee!
"Indigenous" is the more apt term, I used "Native American" so ppl would know more easily, since "Indigenous" can be applied to many pplz beyond my own. Many of our ppl just use "Native." For me it really doesn't matter much. Some of your Maori ppl have come up here, too, and it is interesting to learn of them. Our dances are competitive too now, not 100% but mostly, but not choregraphed....yet, lol. :)
Well... you both raise good points in this matter.. First its Halau not *Halao* next Our King David KALAKAUA was the first to re-create the festival as to remember where his people were from. Most hula talks about the place names, The atmosphere, and also geneology of where the hula is from (from one person to another and so on and so on).I dont understand the point of.. competition?? We as Hawaiians used to share everything. Why stop now? Knowledge is for sharing. Not for boasting. Mahalo
Ok, sincere question here. Were these dances of Native Hawaiian people always this choreographed? or is that the influence of the Western-Euros? I've also noticed on some of these other clips the screaming of women during the more "erotic" moves of the male dancers. Is that a culturally appropriate response? or is that a touristy thing? I honestly don't know so I'm asking. I am a Native American and am interested in the experience of N. Hawaiians and the influx of the Euro-American culture.
Well you gotta remember, that these dances. Movements, songs, rituals were almost all but lost for about a century. What you see before you is the interpretations of such by the "Kumu" teacher. The movements have remained intact but the songs or "Mele" are still being relearned by many Kumu. As for the "erotic" movements, they are a sign of virility and indeed masculine sexuality. If you look at other maoli/maori cultures you'll see the same kinds of movements and choreography.
Try keep in mind too, that this "Halao" Hula group is one of The kingdoms top competitors in the Merry Monarch Festival. Its an annual hula festival and competition held in honour of King David Kala'kau'a aka the Merry Monarch. Who is the man responsible for the renaissance of the Kanaka Maoli culture.
Very good answers, Mr. TonyPstunts :) That was all I wanted to know. A thoughtful answer to an honest question is in short supply these days, so thanks. Fortunately for our Indigenous people on the mainland many of us were able to keep our dances and so forth going, so there has been continuity, despite the outlawing of them by the fed. gov't. Tho some things have changed, and not necessarily for the better, due to the influence of the Euro culture in more recent decades. Thx again.
interesting stuff here, but if u wanna know about good material in this field, google for theonlineseducer you will be amazed like i was! trust me. I see you really don't know who he is
you dont know our way... you better get the facts straight before you talk shit... we are a halau that stays true to our tradition... so i suggest you shut the fck up!
years ago we threw my dad a surprise 60th birthday party. my mom's good friends linda and claude hilacion arranged for some hula to be performed. We were thrilled when sissy and Lincoln arrived with a little group of their troop. They've only gotten better. I'm so happy they're doing so well.
