With all the talk about freedom of expression in Egypt by our governement, I wondered if all that protesting would fit comfortable with Cameron and his ilk if it took place on our streets. Student riots? Egptians fighting an oppressive, heartless governement. What's the difference? Check out the video we did with William Hague.
Some very valid points here. Not sure if #i can really add anything. Everything is being said. All I'll say is please don't let this turn into a flame war? That would be cool if we can have a debate without everyone kicking off!!
Most of you appear deluded. It is the Police who are acting in self defence and trying to prevent public order or a breach of the peace.
Any force use would have been completely within the Law because they are kinda the Police and believe it or not they are aware of their powers regarding use of foce and it was the Police acting in self defense.
I was at the frontline at this protest and the police were absolutely brutal, they repeatedly baton charged with no provocation and charged horses trampling unarm women, people with bleeding heads were common sights, all student violence was in self defence and the vandalism only began when we had been kettled into the same area for well over an hour, mothers were begging to be let out to see their children. Sickeningly later reports have edited this footage to show the police in a better light.
@UnpatrioticEyepatch Thank you for further insight. You've basically confirmed what I thought anyway. I've just been listening to BBC Radio 5 Live. All they're talking about is the royal car incident and how scared big ears was. They keep cutting to a news reel of news in USA about the royals' car- as if to wave its long finger of disapproval at how ashamed we all should be that the whole world knows!! And there was me thinking that the BBC had its finger on the pulse.
...and so what to do. The police are going to close down any expression of protest using the ever present "violent yobs" as a justification for their disgraceful behaviour.
The answer - for those yobs pissing our democracy down the drain, dont talk with them, sit with them, drink with them, talk to them invite them into your home. They are the filth who will condemn us all to totalitarianism and repression.
The oppressed who use violence as first preference have made their choice. It is a bad choice and marches us all into their world of "might is right". There is no need for this in a "democracy" but they are impatient and want to impose their vision onto us all. They are well aware it will provoke reaction from the police and hurt to many but again gets them into the confontation they want, angry people, self seekers and liars, say they want good but delivering bad for all
As far as i could tell the violence was initiated by the police. Police were violently swinging batons at anyone that touched their barricade, a man in front of me pushed off the barricade to keep himself up and the police struck him on the head, the sound was sickening, from then on there were chants of shame on you from the protestors and attempts to flip the barricade to defend the protestors and the use of fences as shields, all of these were answered with further violence.
I do not doubt it for one minute, the police behavior is outrageous, the Met have much form for this, but dont lose the big picture. As long as they have pictures of violent mobs on the news the police behavior will be tolerated by the majority. Why - because the people want law and order to prevail. Peaceful protest and non cooperation is the only legitimate way - but these yobs will stop decent people going out on demo's. This = defeat.
a good point, cilvil disobedience will always get more done than wanton violence however we do occasionally need to use violence to defend ourselves, it is better to save someone from a cavalry charge than to improve our media image.
"we do occasionally need to use violence to defend ourselves"
.....errr right... so you agree that the police reaction to the few guys wielding iron bars was justified?
There was a time when the only people in danger of getting beaten up were the few "angry discontents" who sought to hijack a peaceful demo. Those days are gone, but they need to come back, like I said, no truck with these discontents, they are poison.
No the police reaction was massively disproportionate, those few guys were exactly that, few, in fact i thought it was just one guy, a few officers could have run in and arrested him, instead of a total baton charge of all the protestors. There was never a tiem when only discontents were attacked by the police, the police have always been masssively violent with little provocation.
I see you are angry, we all are: but public disorder can now be dealt with by the police with great efficiency, there are now many electronic, chemical tools available when they exhaust batons, brute force, water canon etc.
The point is, the hooligans will bring all this on and the repression that goes with it. That is the greatest danger - just a question of priorities.
you are being fatalistic, what you are saying is do not rebel because we cannot win, i say we can win, there was a chant at the protest that was very popular "there are many many more of us than you" the protesters there outnumbered the police massively, if we wanted to we could have broken every line, stopped every cavalry charge and marched right up to parliament, people talk about charles and camillas car, there was a point where we could have marched on buckingham palace itself

@UnpatrioticEyepatch You're not oppressed. Stop feeling sorry for yourself and thinking you're a bloody victim mate. You think you're oppressed? Go to North Korea, China, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Burma.. Those are countries where the people are oppressed.
You have the freedoms that allow you to even protest, you should be grateful for those freedoms.
@UnpatrioticEyepatch No provocation? I watched all of this LIVE on BBC and Sky News and you got to be shitting me if you're saying there was no provocation (it wasn't edited because it was live). I saw it from start to finish and you guys certainly provoked the police. Without a doubt. I watched it with my own eyes and I think the rest of Britain did too.
You watched this on the news, I saw it with my own eyes. Even if the violence was started by the protestors then the police still used unnecesary measures, you have no right to speak on what constitutes unnecesary measures until you have been cavalry charged, i managed to escape but i saw men and women trampled and beaten, people struck for trying to drag friends out of the way of horses, if it had not been for "violent protestors" driving them back many would be dead.
the vast majority of protestors didn't even know there was an agreed route, myself included, either way it is a public highway and the public should be allowed to walk down it whether they are protesting or not.
@jnkacme Thanks for your comment. I am also outraged by this disgraceful display. Please do try to keep the "naughty words" to a minimum. I won't delete your comment or anything because we're all entitled to our opinion.
It happened already and thats why I got my opinion about them. Btw I hope you get beaten up next time you are struggling with your life and you only ask for a better one.
