@theCuno100 Dude I lived and been raised in Russia! about 40% of Russian population is Muslim, almost half half. Russians respect Islam go to Russia and if you talk bad about Muslims you will get your ass kicked. Russian are Orthodox Christians, many Russians convert to Islam after seeing the truth. So don't talk from your ass since Afghanistan if known as the graveyard of empires. We debated the entire British Empire not once to twice but 3 TIMES! All Muslim countries are strong.
I've always wondered what Afghanistan would be like today if the US & its allies hadn't helped the Mujahedeen against the Soviets & Afghan Government. Then again what would the world be like if there had been no Cold War? God knows (or does he?)
@robsargent4 Communism replaces religious BS with ideological BS. Same repression, different day, whatever.
Although communism in Afghanistan is a bit better than the Taliban rule, it had a lot of human rights abuse just like any communist country like Pol Pot and Khmer Rouge before it. Between 1979 and 1989, Soviet troops and Afghan communists executed over 100,000 political prisoners just because they complain about conditions, sympathy for Muj, etc.
@publicmario17 Yes, most forms of Communism are repressive, & the Soviets certainly were that, but in the grand scheme of things what would've happened? Well, I suppose, there's not much point wondering, because what happened is what we're stuck with - we've all just got to lump it unfortunately.
@robsargent4 Also if you read the book by George Crile III, it describes Wilson as a lobbyist for Pakistan following his retirement from Congress. This was years after the war ended. He had lobbied hard to get help into Afghanistan by proposing a $4 million relief package that was tossed aside by the U.S. and Pakistan government.
If they let Wilson helped rebuild Afghanistan instead of letting Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, do what they want the twin towers in NY would have been still standing.
Question: Would Afghanistan be any different if the Soviets won the war? Would America be any safer if we did not intervene? Would Al-Qaeda have existed if we did not aid the Afghan rebels? "My enemy of my enemy is my friend" is not a motto you run a foreign policy on.
@Allante715 this is why this movie is a satire, though not being as sharp as a satire normally is. in hindsight you can always ask these questions, but you wont ever get answers. no one knows how this influenced afghanistan and al-qaeda and what wouldve happened without the intervention. back then, communism was the biggest enemy that existed and had to be weakened wherever possibe.
"the enemy of the enemy is my friend" actually IS how foreign policy is practiced. just take a look at history.
@lonewolfstallone I don't think where on the same page here. But No i am not Russian i am Australian simply stating that the Soviets were not the bad guys in this war. The Soviet Union and Afghanistan were fighting against the Mujahideen rebels. Also i do not support Communism! It cannot work in our world while their are greedy people still alive.
@lonewolfstallone The Russians were not in Afghanistan to conquer it. The Soviet Union had existed next door to the country for more than 60 years without any kind of invasion. It was only when the United States intervened in Afghanistan to replace a government friendly to Moscow with one militantly anti-communist that the Russians invaded to do battle with the US-supported Islamic jihadists; precisely what the United States would have done to prevent a communist government in Canada or Mexico.
Just reading everyone comments just shows how stupid people are. Soviet Russia signed a peace treaty with Afghanistan in 1978 which allowed them to call upon Russia for military support. 1979 Afghanistan requested Soviet troops to assist against the fight with the MUJAHIDEEN REBELS. These REBELS were ANTI COMMUNIST which gained the support from the USA. Also whats funny is the reason why where in Afghanistan today is because of the Taliban and guess who supplied these people with weapons AMERICA
The Russians should have been left alone to destory Afghanistan. How would them taking over that country cause any damage to the U.S.A.? If the Russians were left to do their job, there would have been no 9/11, no two wars in the 2000's, no money issues going on in this country, etc.
I hope one day my country stops wanting to play "Superman" all the time.
@Zeeboe Exactly, it wouldn't cause any damage to the USA, then again how often has any other country posed any REAL threat to the USA? Most wars are started by the USA FACT!
The only reason the USA intervened in Afghanistan was because they wanted the Natural resources for themselves so that the Russians don't get it. So I think you meant to say 'I hope one day my country stops wanting to play "Greedy Pigs" all the time.'
@Zeeboe so you say its ok for the russians to kill people rather then just leaving them alone ? you know i think if the russian left them alone the it would not have been such a big deal for muslims to do jihad
I like the scenes where we are supposed to be saddened, disgusted and angered by the atrocities committed by big bad red Russians (and cheer the muslim headcutters as "freedom fighters")..
Actually, these scenes make me laugh cause I see scenes of burning villages, deformed mutant human monsters, deadborns, children with no limbs (born or blown off), mass graves...all approved and committed by US troops just a few years earlier, in Vietnam.
@8bitBusDriver Just because Americans committed these acts does not mean that we thought that they were right, in fact if i do remember correctly there were countless rallies against the war (in vietnam). Vietnam was a mistake and we Americans acknowledge that now and then, but the SU had no right to invade Afghanistan. Charlie Wilson was a good man, and just because the US made mistake a few years before does not take away from the fact that he helped people.
when the Soviets left Afghanistan, Gust Avrakotos said in his toast, "here's to you, you motherfuckers!" last night, we learned Osama bin Laden was killed. in honor of Gust, i'd just like to say, "here's to you, you motherfucker!"
@jeepdogpet ..and your point is? I know he was a Democrat. My comment was in regards to people saying the movie is "liberal crap", when in reality, the movie is a close approximation of how history unfolded.
People might understand how things are screwed up alot more if they paid attention to their history. It's not Liberal 'crap'...it's history. This stuff 'really' happened...during two Republican presidencies.

@PlayedYou73 Reagan finally released the Stingers when someone convinced him this had something to do with bringing down his "evil empire." Otherwise, sorry, Reagan was as useless as t*t* on a fish: he was turned into a neocon icon AFTER he left office by all the "liberal" press outlets.
pifff, afghanistan is ruled by selfish greedy imams who said "GOD WILL TELL WHO IS RICH AND WHO IS POOR".. WTF is that? imo, communism might've fixd up the ancient problems in afghanistan like illiteracy and inequality -__-
@uberonn Afghanistan was one of the first proxy wars run by the United States. I haven't seen this movie but I wouldn’t dismiss it off hand as 'liberal crap.' Before jumping to conclusions, perhaps you could conduct some research on this subject. I understand however that you may be republican, and therefore having an informed opinion is not your strong suit. That is fine; in this case please feel free to stop breathing my air.
@uberonn You may be correct: but Charlie was an anti-communist liberal, which was common 30 & 40 yr ago but today is considered an oxymoron; & mostly by anti-free enterprise conservatives.
I just finished the book by George Crile.... my third reading, since it hit the shelves, after recently getting the DVD..... i saw the opening of the movie here in late 2007.
My quote is pretty much in Charlie's own words....
We screwed up the end game... and are paying for that in blood and treasure.
What a shitty movie.. best part is when an F16 and a Huey helicopter is shot down (making us believe that those are Soviet machines).. plus too much propaganda.. ..although nice chicks all the time
The Mujahidin were wiped out by the Taliban who came in from Pakistan. The North of Afganistan remained in Muj control and was actually slightly more happy at our arrival, though that is a very small slightly.
@blja No the Mujahedins are Warlords who faught to preserve there power and Arabs foreign fiters like Osama before he made Al Queda they left when the Soviets left to fight in Bosnia. The Taliban were all Afgans from the south of the country and overthrew or joined the warlords. Besides the Taliban rose in 1994 years after the war ended. So the final answer is the Mujahedan that the US supported was NOT the Taliban. This whole thing is just to make the US look bad pathetic.
This must be the most expensive piece of propaganda ever produced in hollywood. unbelievable. what is tom hanks doing in this movie? making the armssells to the taliban look like a charming loves story?
@Billymaysfan6837 he never did this on his own this movie is just fake ass propaganda charlie wilson was not a traitor to the american ppl your compleet coverment was and still is the FBI CIA NSA NASA FEMA there are making you guys life in a fairytale
More silly Americans anybody isn't present :))))) Force down in a film the helicopter and believe that have brought down Russian. Here cretins!:))))) the stupid people!!!

@SVEJENASE13 lol where did the shit those helicopters whit ???uuu ow yea american weapons what do you think will happen when you give americans hightec rocketlaunchers tanks and other weapons you think there will be peace in america you think police helicopters can fly safe its not the muslims its ppl thats happpens when you gif suprest ppl weapons (srry for my sucky english)
omggggggggggg so many douches talking shit on here! FYI i dont even bother reading comments anymore cause their all just housewives or bored kids sitting at home talking shitttttt so shut it
I loved this movie, Charlie Wilson was also portrayed on the History Channel. Is not the USA doing the same in Afghanistan that the Soviets did to them? Did not the drain of money killing innocent men, women, and children help the Soviet Union fall, with thugs running the government, same as here in the Usa? Trillions gone, stealing from people we do not know only profits those at the top.
Look at my uploaded video: Alices Restaurant, United States Marines pulling irrigation pipe in the opium
@badattitude77769 My awesome neighbor, very good man got fired from his job as a securtiy officer, five years, laid back retirement job, low wages, press your suit to work for four hours in a day, his boss, former special forces said they used to load a DC-3 in Camodia, a neutral country, asked him what they were loading, he just smiled.
Wait... is this movie based on real history? If it is wow that's something.
Btw that meeting between Hanks and the Pakistani president in the movie was hilarious. "I bet a lot of people make that mistake (about asking for whiskey in a Muslim nation)." And the president says "lol, no."
This movie is clearly a fraud; the imagination that a mediate figure can heat up a conflict without the approval and consent of the ruling people is highly ridicules; so someone takes himself more serious than he ever was and the people involved are pleased that a morale depraved person takes the blame, especially as the USA is now fighting the same war as the Russians did before against its former allies and minions; and they are not going to win it; Bactria is lost to them.
Besides this the movie is a farce: Part of it is the male fantasy of an elder due: All the willing, attractive women who adore him, then the ultra-clever secret service folk: The hyper-intelligent twelve year old weapon specialist; and most of all the hilarious imagination that Russia was a menace to the rest of the world at that time and that it was defeated; the losses the Russians bore there in ten years are less than what they lost even in victorious battles in World War II.
But they could have made a parody of this: The core should be that the Russians have finally build the Doomsday Machine, which was mentioned in doctor Strangelove, and then the assault on it must be a combination of the two death star assaults from Star Wars, with military aircraft; and of course: The father of the hero was captured by the foul communists and turned to the dark side of the economy; and this is were the Zen Master finds his place: He will show the hero the ways of the economy...
This movie totally rocks! My favorite scene is when 3 Mujaheddin using FIM-92 Stinger Missiles to shot down Soviet Communist bastard flying Mi-24/25 Hind.
Interesting how fiction is used to show that Russian helicopters killed civilians in Afghanistan, as this movie shows, but actual footage of U.S. helicopter pilots killing civilians and aiming at children in Iraq pops up nowadays. Irony, anyone? Or is it simply the case of life imitating art?
Search: "Wikileaks Collateral Murder"
What you Americans think of the Russians because of your movies, the rest of the world thinks of Americans because of your actions.
@kerzha American here! How do you do? Anyways, I'm 19, and have no involvement with any politics. I plan on moving to the Philippines, Japan, or maybe Australia. There are millions like me. Please stop saying "Americans" and say "American Government", which we have no control over. You can still hate the republicans though.
Al qaeda was responsible for 9/11... irak had massive destruction weapons, biological weapons, nuclear weapons... and the "Luck Skywalker`s sword"... only George W. Bush can beleabe that.
My favorite part in that movie is when Mujaheddin fire 3 FIM-92 Stinger missiles to hit 3 Mi-24 Hind for killing the civilians. In reality those Mi-24 have killing civilians since they arrived in Afghanistan from 1979-1989. Total death over 100,000. The 900,000 go to from Soviet Tanks, BMP, BMD, BTR to ran over civilians as a torture. Su-25, Su-17/20/22 & Mig fighters dropping Chemical bombs. Soviet Troops raped, torture, electrified, & slaughter innocent women, children, & civilians.
public support. Also, I don't have a problem with admitting defeat. If defeat is failing to accomplish an object, then we most assuredly lost the war in Vietnam. However, there were extenuating circumstance. We were, in fact, winning the war, like the British. We won something like 95 percent of all encounters and we even defeated the VC when they organized major offensives like Tet.
@redmrlove13 For once I agree with your analysis. The reason I regard Washington as a genius is for precisely the reason you outline, he knew survival would eventually lead to victory. The VC knew the same thing.
@MrHistoryman45 and you can relate the American Revolutionary war with the Vietnam war well. All the VC had to do was hold us off until we lost interest. Some thing with the UK
@TankIV It was hardly lost interest in either case. In each case the war was virtually unwinnable by the more established power as destroying a guerrilla army with huge popular support is nearly impossible. The guerrilla force could keep inflicting losses sapping the military power of the enemy and training resources which damaged them around the world. It didn't help that Britain offered no political structure for North America or that the US backed a corrupt gov'n in South Vietnam.
@TankIV In the case of those wars it doesn't bother me as my sympathies were with the guerrillas. However I certainly do not support the Taliban and I fear the situation will play out in the same way. If anything the Wests actions are strengthening them.
@MrHistoryman45 it wont. Right now we are making good progress. Its the ppl of those countries that are the ones that change themselves. We only help. Then need to stand up against the Taliban. ppl in those counries are actually standing up to them. The suicide bomber who was killed by afgan ppl. Also the Iraq elections i belive it was.
@TankIV If a foreign army was ever to invade the US however benign or beneficial the American people would resist because they would not be told what to do by a foreign occupying power. Other people are no different to Americans. Afghans will never accept a government that is foreign controlled. Much of what the media call the Taliban are not Taliban. The Taliban is a small group that has forged an anti-foreigner coalition of local chiefs and others.
@TankIV The US started all this as long ago as the seventies undermining the regime that kicked out the absolute monarch who ruled at that time. Having said that if you're saying why should the US (and for that matter any Western country) be in Afghanistan I would agree. There are better ways of dealing with Jihadis.
@TankIV Who said negotiate? A more effective way would be to pull out and then watch the other groups turn on them. As for the US not negotiating with terrorists not true. They funded and armed these particular terrorists in the seventies and eighties.
@MrHistoryman45 We funded the afgan freedom fighters. To fight the soviets. Then theTALIBAN, a different groupe came in. Some of the afgans that were trained by us joined by them. and if we pull out how will that make us look?? The ppl of Afganistan will be killed for working with us and then the talban will rule again.
@TankIV Oh no - you funded terrorists and mass murderers. The US and Taliban like to pretend the Taliban came later, it did not. Taliban means students and they were formed to absorb the foreign terrorists who came to Afghanistan. The CIA's great idea was to turn the war into a religious war to attract as many extremists as possible. Osama Bin Laden was among them. As for how the US looks if it pulls out, a lot better if it does so as part of a plan than if the war runs it cause.
@TankIV No I don't. I do think Bush was probably relieved by all the crack pot theories about the CIA planning 9/11. It diverts attention from awkward facts such as who the Taliban are, were they came from, and the support they received from the US right up until 9/11. The fact is Taliban leaders were being entertained in the US as last as the spring of 2001. The US wanted a stable regime in Afghanistan to secure an oil pipe line from the former Soviet Central Asia.
@TankIV By any measure a lot less lives ruined than the countless billions whose lives have been destroyed by capitalism. I find it disgusting that the earth produces enough for everyone and millions die through lack of food, clean water, general sanitation and health care.
@TankIV Also the war has totally destabilized Pakistan. I don't share your confidence of the elections, the evidence is that many people especially women dare not vote. The parliament includes an assorted collection of crooks, murderers and even some Taliban. The Karazai government is so corrupt the UN said recently that people connected to the regime sent over $1bn to Dubai last year, no doubt looted from the aid budget.
@MrHistoryman45 and you can relate the American Revolutionary war with the Vietnam war well. All the VC had to do was hold us off until we lost interest. Some thing with the UK
have been there in the first place. But if it is your contention that we lost the war in the field, then you need to change your screen name immediately because you don't know anything about history. The was was because Americans no longer supported the war because of what they saw on TV. We we not losing the war by any stretch of the imagination. As I mentioned in an earlier post, we killed the enemy 10 to 1.
@redmrlove13 War and politics go hand in hand. The US public no longer wanted to carry on with a pointless war (for which I commend them) . But the US set out to maintain its protectorate in South Vietnam and failed. You can call it what you like and I appreciate that for misplaced patriotic reasons you may not like the word defeat. (The war actually has some interesting parallels with your own War of Independence but I expect that will only upset you more).
@MrHistoryman45 actually a bunch of Godless Russian commies are rotting in hell thanks to his fundraising, and only the US, er actually George Bush, is allowed to define who "terrorists" are, but nice try
@svbn2006 You're right that George w believes only he has the right to define a terrorist. Actually to be totally accurate the film perpetrates the myth that the US only began funding the Mujahideen-Taliban after the Soviet intervention. In fact Carter had begun funding them before that to destabilize the Afghan government before the Soviets intervened. As for the people who are rotting (in your words) as a result of this misguided policy don't forget the people who died on 9/11.
As an American I feel sham and embaressment that we caused so many Russian deaths chosing to support the terrorist over Russia. I'm no fan of communism, but its far better than theocracy. Why was this movie made?
And maybe you had a problem with boils when you were younger and maybe you are making a meager salary working an insignificant, nondescript job or living with your mother, but as far as I am concerned, that has nothing to do with Afghanistan. And the university I went to would beat out the one you went to (if you even went through secondary school).
Ianpbx: I know damn well the history of Afghanistan and instead of trying to start rubbish talking like a little punk, try to talk like a gentleman. Nothing is more hypocritical than a limey trying to glorify the Soviet Union and thinking the Soviets would have liked him if he was significant enough to grab their attention. They would laugh at you. Your just another typical bizarre conspiracy nut who thinks the CIA worked directly with bin Laden, when most evidence goes against that notion.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Scud missiles were sold to Saddam by Russia. Chemicals used to build weapons were acquired from the Europeans and Russia. Who are you kidding?
Your communist empire is dead. It was a failed ideology. Don't go about professing to be British you fraud. If you are British, bend over and thank us for saving your sorry asses in World War II. Oh wait, you already do by doing what we tell you to.
johnmaie - You obviously have no idea what your rotten government does. It was Donald Rumsfeld who dealt directly with Saddam to supply the chemical weapons. The scud missiles (which was old Soviet stock) were sold to Iraq to defend themselves against Israeli aggression.
My communist empire? I'm not a communist. I just know right from wrong. Saving us in WW2? USA only came in after the Luftwaffe had lost most of its airplanes in the Battle of Britain.
"USA only came in after the Luftwaffe had lost most of its airplanes in the Battle of Britain."
LOL. The luftwaffe lost most of its planes in the Battle of Britain? Someone's completely ignorant of history. The Luftwaffe was an extremely potent force up until 1944.
omeone's completely ignorant of history. THAT'S RIGHT , FELLA!
but tonight, i'm not fighting with them Damn nazys, hitlerites!
i wanted to point out... how could such Humanitarians as Tom Hanks, Julia Roberts, Philip Seymour Hoffman, etc,.. could participate in that filth, "kill our enemies, per cei, russkies, ''.. wow did pentaghon give ya a medal after that?
@Ianpbx Donald Rumsfeld was a roomate of Frank Carlucci in college, Frank is ceo of the Carlyle Group, 14 billion dollar investment in "defense" spending. Frank and James Baker III, former secretary of state, the Bin Laden family, were at a Carlyle investor meeting at the Ritz Carlton the day of 911, so much money was made that day. Has anyone seen Osama, his name as a cia asset was Tim Osman, What is with Osama, Obama Hussein? Kerosene stoves burn at 1800 degrees, steel melts at 2800 degrees.
@Ianpbx Government also sold saddam helicopters, sarin gas, anthrax, anything to make a buck. The children in other countries are being born with horrible deformities, everyone knows that corporations could not dispose of nuclear waste properly, that would cost money. About four billion years, people on planet earth will have children, animals, plant life, sea animals born deformed because the united states has to have rounds heavier than lead to go through a tank, mens bodies spagetti out the
@Ianpbx Or to make the Iraqi's compliant to the Soviet Union. The Arab world, to both Westerners and Soviets, has easy fodder. The US sold weapons to both sides of Iran-Iraq with the intent of letting both sides rip each other to shreds. It was more of an effort to make the Arabs and Iranians destroy themselves than as a specific act of friendship.
@johnmaie Saving our sorry asses? The US government sat on its ass until Pearl Harbor. If the likes of Old Joe Kennedy and Charles Lindbergh had had their way, the US would have sat it out while Hitler did as he liked. Then of course theres Vietnam where the US got its ass well and truly kicked!
@MrHistoryman45 The US didn't get it's ass well and truly kicked, Mr. Jackass. We lost 58,000 soldiers, the VC lost 10 times as many, maybe more. Yes, we failed to accomplished our objective, mainly because we didn't have one. But to say we got our asses kicked is ridiculous. Try cracking a book instead of reading crap on the internet.
@redmrlove13 Why don't you just do a simple YouTube search for the last day in Saigon? You'll see all the US's Southern Vietnamese Quislings crying outside the embassy begging to get on the choppers while US Marines hold them back. There is no space the US government is running away and it needs all the space of the choppers it can get! As for losses Vietnamese losses especially among civilians who were targeted by the US were huge.
@johnmaie its people like you that make all Americans look like egotistical arrogant fucks who dont care what anyone else in the world think, but people like you are the minority. most of us care. shut the hell up and go die in a fucking hole you cunt and stop soiling the good American reputation so the rest of the world can meet an American an have a decent first impression not automatically think we are assholes. SHITHEAD!!!!!
It is not the people, it is the so called leaders, lying parasitic weirdos in suit, bubba will have a heyday! Ronald Reagan meets with the Taliban: These gentlemen are the moral equivilent of our founding fathers. 1985. The muhjadeen were freedom fighters, they repeled the stupid soviet invasion, downfall of communism, why are united states marines pulling pipe to irrigate the poppy fields, look my uploaded video called: Alices Restaurant, please.
@Ianpbx Is terrorism evil??? Is dictatorship evil??? Then that means you are calling us evil if we support them. AND WE DONT SUPPORT THEM!!!!! WTF do you think we are doing now. Typical veiw of US to jealous and communists
@TankIV - Jealous and Communist? What's that shit? And I never call anything "evil", it's too subjective.
The US government oversaw the supply of chemical weapons to Saddam. The CIA sponsored the Mujahideen (organised by Bin Laden) to kill Russians in Afghanistan. The US and their NATO puppets are now sending soldiers to die protecting the oil pipeline in Afghanistan, which benefits the US oil companies, just as the US is backing the Burma military dictatorship for the same reason.
@Ianpbx So then we are the good guys supporting the terrorists. I bet you belive that the CIA was responsible for 9/11 also. That missiles hit the towers, not plains.
@TankIV - As it's too complicated for you to understand, I'll make it simple. Your government and CIA creates an Islamic terrorist organisation in partnership with Osama Bin Laden called Mujahideen, with which to destabilize the Afghan government. The Mujahideen eventually morphs into the Taliban. The US government finds an excuse to invade Afghanistan. Huge numbers of soldiers from poor families die so that the arms manufacturers and oil companies can make big profits.
Bin Laden was never a "soldier", let alone an insignificant one. He was a wealthy Saudi recruiter and organiser, working hand in glove with the CIA, with the blessing of Zbigniew Brzezinski. Yes, that's the same Zbigniew Brzezinski that's been pulling the strings behind Obama.
Afghanistan was more of a paradise under soviet influence, with women granted equality, investment in education and health. All the NATO invasion has done is bring back the heroin industry.
The way you speak about Afghanistan under Soviet occupation proves you have no impartiality on this subject and were affected by these events in some way. Something happened to you in your past, whether it was a dead relative serving in the Red Army or your own/family ties to the Soviet Union.

@lonewolfstallone The Russians were not in Afghanistan to conquer it. The Soviet Union had existed next door to the country for more than 60 years without any kind of invasion.

How does American audience buy that hypocrisy?
8bitBusDriver 8 months ago
@8bitBusDriver Just because Americans committed these acts does not mean that we thought that they were right, in fact if i do remember correctly there were countless rallies against the war (in vietnam). Vietnam was a mistake and we Americans acknowledge that now and then, but the SU had no right to invade Afghanistan. Charlie Wilson was a good man, and just because the US made mistake a few years before does not take away from the fact that he helped people.

Did not the drain of money killing innocent men, women, and children help the Soviet Union fall, with thugs running the government, same as here in the Usa? Trillions gone, stealing from people we do not know only profits those at the top.

Btw that meeting between Hanks and the Pakistani president in the movie was hilarious. "I bet a lot of people make that mistake (about asking for whiskey in a Muslim nation)." And the president says "lol, no."
PrUnEJuIcEtHeThIrD 1 year ago
This movie is clearly a fraud; the imagination that a mediate figure can heat up a conflict without the approval and consent of the ruling people is highly ridicules; so someone takes himself more serious than he ever was and the people involved are pleased that a morale depraved person takes the blame, especially as the USA is now fighting the same war as the Russians did before against its former allies and minions; and they are not going to win it; Bactria is lost to them.
GreatGrumbledook 1 year ago
Besides this the movie is a farce: Part of it is the male fantasy of an elder due: All the willing, attractive women who adore him, then the ultra-clever secret service folk: The hyper-intelligent twelve year old weapon specialist; and most of all the hilarious imagination that Russia was a menace to the rest of the world at that time and that it was defeated; the losses the Russians bore there in ten years are less than what they lost even in victorious battles in World War II.
GreatGrumbledook 1 year ago
But they could have made a parody of this: The core should be that the Russians have finally build the Doomsday Machine, which was mentioned in doctor Strangelove, and then the assault on it must be a combination of the two death star assaults from Star Wars, with military aircraft; and of course: The father of the hero was captured by the foul communists and turned to the dark side of the economy; and this is were the Zen Master finds his place: He will show the hero the ways of the economy...

The 900,000 go to from Soviet Tanks, BMP, BMD, BTR to ran over civilians as a torture. Su-25, Su-17/20/22 & Mig fighters dropping Chemical bombs. public support. Also, I don't have a problem with admitting defeat. If defeat is failing to accomplish an object, then we most assuredly lost the war in Vietnam. However, there were extenuating circumstance. We were, in fact, winning the war, like the British. We won something like 95 percent of all encounters and we even defeated the VC when they organized major offensives like Tet.
redmrlove13 1 year ago
@redmrlove13 For once I agree with your analysis. The reason I regard Washington as a genius is for precisely the reason you outline, he knew survival would eventually lead to victory. The VC knew the same thing.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 and you can relate the American Revolutionary war with the Vietnam war well. All the VC had to do was hold us off until we lost interest. Some thing with the UK
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV It was hardly lost interest in either case. In each case the war was virtually unwinnable by the more established power as destroying a guerrilla army with huge popular support is nearly impossible. The guerrilla force could keep inflicting losses sapping the military power of the enemy and training resources which damaged them around the world. It didn't help that Britain offered no political structure for North America or that the US backed a corrupt gov'n in South Vietnam.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@TankIV In the case of those wars it doesn't bother me as my sympathies were with the guerrillas. However I certainly do not support the Taliban and I fear the situation will play out in the same way. If anything the Wests actions are strengthening them.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 it wont. Right now we are making good progress. Its the ppl of those countries that are the ones that change themselves. We only help. Then need to stand up against the Taliban. ppl in those counries are actually standing up to them. The suicide bomber who was killed by afgan ppl. Also the Iraq elections i belive it was.
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV If a foreign army was ever to invade the US however benign or beneficial the American people would resist because they would not be told what to do by a foreign occupying power. Other people are no different to Americans. Afghans will never accept a government that is foreign controlled. Much of what the media call the Taliban are not Taliban. The Taliban is a small group that has forged an anti-foreigner coalition of local chiefs and others.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 then how is it our problem.
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV The US started all this as long ago as the seventies undermining the regime that kicked out the absolute monarch who ruled at that time. Having said that if you're saying why should the US (and for that matter any Western country) be in Afghanistan I would agree. There are better ways of dealing with Jihadis.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 we dont negotiate with terrorists
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV Who said negotiate? A more effective way would be to pull out and then watch the other groups turn on them. As for the US not negotiating with terrorists not true. They funded and armed these particular terrorists in the seventies and eighties.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 We funded the afgan freedom fighters. To fight the soviets. Then theTALIBAN, a different groupe came in. Some of the afgans that were trained by us joined by them. and if we pull out how will that make us look?? The ppl of Afganistan will be killed for working with us and then the talban will rule again.
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV Oh no - you funded terrorists and mass murderers. The US and Taliban like to pretend the Taliban came later, it did not. Taliban means students and they were formed to absorb the foreign terrorists who came to Afghanistan. The CIA's great idea was to turn the war into a religious war to attract as many extremists as possible. Osama Bin Laden was among them. As for how the US looks if it pulls out, a lot better if it does so as part of a plan than if the war runs it cause.
MrHistoryman45 1 year ago
@MrHistoryman45 belive what you want, you need to face the fact that we are trying to help those ppl. I bet you belive 9/11 was planned by us
TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV No I don't. I do think Bush was probably relieved by all the crack pot theories about the CIA planning 9/11. It diverts attention from awkward facts such as who the Taliban are, were they came from, and the support they received from the US right up until 9/11. The fact is Taliban leaders were being entertained in the US as last as the spring of 2001. The US wanted a stable regime in Afghanistan to secure an oil pipe line from the former Soviet Central Asia.

@MrHistoryman45 So your a communist. And it seems that communism is all good and no people have had their live ruined by it.

No system is totally right or wrong. It's not the system that's the issue... it's the people in it.
Dfnoboy 1 year ago
@TankIV Also the war has totally destabilized Pakistan. I don't share your confidence of the elections, the evidence is that many people especially women dare not vote. The parliament includes an assorted collection of crooks, murderers and even some Taliban. The Karazai government is so corrupt the UN said recently that people connected to the regime sent over $1bn to Dubai last year, no doubt looted from the aid budget.

@redmrlove13 War and politics go hand in hand. The US public no longer wanted to carry on with a pointless war (for which I commend them) .

TankIV 1 year ago
@TankIV - As it's too complicated for you to understand, I'll make it simple. Your government and CIA creates an Islamic terrorist organisation in partnership with Osama Bin Laden called Mujahideen, with which to destabilize the Afghan government. The Mujahideen eventually morphs into the Taliban. The US government finds an excuse to invade Afghanistan. Huge numbers of soldiers from poor families die so that the arms manufacturers and oil companies can make big profits.

@Ianpbx Too complicated? you just dont see it do you. What you belive in is stupid anti USA propoganda.
