  • yes thank you great videos...many of these videos bore me to tears, yours I find both informative and entertaining, and i like that your wife smokes too!

As a new pipe smoker I am also confused about cleaning the inside of the bowl and the cake? Can you basically clean the cake? as if it was a part of the wood? -very carefully? also I have bought some estate pipes that have caked already. what is your thought on leaving the cake and feeling lucky or cleaning it off etc...

  • @bangbangcfp yes you can clean the cake with q-tips and alcohol. Or tissue paper etc. Most pipers ream/scrap back the cake on old estates, then give it an alcohol clean and rebuild the cake up again. It really depends on how rough the pipe tastes, old cake layers will taste pretty bad. If the pipe has been used recently not so bad.

  • Excellent, this was a great help. I'm definitely going to look into getting some of these products. I'd seen this video a while ago and couldn't for the life of me remember the products. Part of me thought you could also polish the bowl with a bit of rum or Whiskey. As always, it was great watching one of your videos.

    All the best Dub, Sebastian

  • I'll try it out. Thanks, you the man!

  • Man, I can't seem to build a good cake at the bottom of my bowl, any tips?

  • Try to smoke all the way to the bottom, smoke slower, shake up ash in the bowl when finished the pipe, this helps to speed up cake building....PS it's a common problem.

  • thanks dub...

  • everclear for cleaning and salt and alcohol treatment....plenty of pipe cleaners and Q tips....low speed buffer....under 1800 rpm....3 wheels one for tripoli compound for the steam....one for white diamond compound for stem and bowl.....one for carnuba wax for a final polish of everything....can't beat it

  • Thank you Pearce, it turns out that today I was looking for some kind of bowl wax for my pipes and there you are with some great ideas.

    Best regards,

    Kel

  • i realy like bacardy 151. that is 151 proof 75.5% it cleans great and leaves a nice tast in my pipes. i has worked mireacals in old estate pipes

  • great great great 5 stars review,,i tried all the equipment reviewed other than arango spray which i replaced by the use of the denicota polish,,the pipe sweetner on the other hand is good but i still do prefer whisky although m a muslim but alcohol evaporate fast and i use it after m done with the pipe and get it bk to the rotation so by the time i tk it again no traces wt so ever will b there

    cheers

  • Ahmad, good to get feedback, the pipe spray does leave a slight 'toothpaste' aftertaste, I see this as a now and then cleaner, but I think whiskey adds a much better flavor. As for the Wipe I like the fact that it is very handy and easy to use.

  • thanks for imparting all the info, Dub. most appreciated. MM - question: I haven't any appreciable build up of cake in any of my pipes...yet, but am wondering what effect the inside of the bowl cleaner has on the build up. does it remove it (as gunk)? If so, is that a good thing?

  • MM, it will remove some cake, I always say don't clean the inside of bowl for the first 20 smokes with wiskey or rum, and thereafter only every 5 or 6, and always gently.

  • okiedoke - thanks, eh! MM

  • This is quite a great video full of usefull info. Thanks Dub!!!

    Cheers,

    Eric

  • Dub, will the Dunhill stem polish (and the Denicotea polish) work on acrylic stems as well? Thanks.

  • Simply put, no, it would scratch them. The briar wipe works fine, also some olive oil on tissue, also lip balm.

  • Another great video of reviews!

  • Another very informative video from you Dub. Great stuff!

So, there's no place in EU where you can buy those aerosol cans? One would think with the pipe market in Germany that some one would import them here... well, maybe after watching your great review. :-)

    Cheers,

    Mike

  • Ever tried 4noggins' blend Bald Headed Teacher?

  • Said you tried Pledge. What about Lemon Pledge? LOL just curious.

  • Thank you for the informative video.

    Cheers!

  • hi dub,

you can also use cleaning products from "kerab" - good stuff for cleaning and polish, restore...

    cheers, matthias

  • Thank you for this video. This is a very helpful review. The deniclean sweetener is really no better than water, same with the bee sweetener. There is nothing better than everclear, or if you don't mind the taste, I also use scotch and whisky. Pipe sweeteners, i believe, are basically watered down isopropyl alcohol. Everclear is so cheap and you need so little that it doesn't make sense to waste money of fancy namebrand sweeteners.

I find the denicare keeps my pipes nice and shiny .

  • Centip, I suspect your right about Everclear, but we can't buy it here in Eurozone. The Deniclean sweeter, seems the least impressive, But the Pipe Spray (for inside) does seem to be more deep cleaning than regular rum, whiskey, just tastes a bit like toothpaste.

  • I forgot about that. The U.S. isn't getting any better either though. I'll have to check out that pipe spray. Does it affect taste?

    Best

    Michael

  • I like the briar pipe wipe spray too. The can I have is about out of aerosol propellant though, so it's about time to re-up.

    Thanks for the vid.

    Cheers,

    Crow
