You guys go into the Freedom Tunnel and think that was it. I wrote graffiti in the 80's and was in the subtunnels and escape hatches. I saw people living there and knew how to escape from Broadway and end up on Riverside drive. But you guys won't be walking the tracks in Harlem. There are many abandoned tunnels if you have the guts.
This was actually a really good doc!!! Ya know what though, you should see what's REALLY far down there. For lack of a better word, reptile looking people
this has to be a high school student's class project or something. that would explain the narrator's painful attempts at trying to make his voice sound older and deeper.
Way back after Dark Days was released a huge crack down came to the people living in the tunnels. Police and city workers drove them out. New York is totally hostile to homeless people. I'm sure they have found new tunnels.
This is a very degrading post for the plight of homeless American citizens. There are many people living in tunnels and other abandonded structures in this country so FUCK YOU!
I lived in NYC from '89 -'99; worked at Bellevue Psychiatric ER. Occasionally we'd triage a homeless person who chose to live off the grid in the tunnels, mostly the abandoned tunnels under 2nd avenue (I think that's where some lived). Some psychiatrists at Bellevue went into the tunnels doing outreach in the 80's. Ask a veteran cop, homeless outreach worker, or subway engineer about their experiences with the moles in the tunnels (1974-1994); before they were forced out. -MU
if it's real then why dont they just go do a research. like go down there, im pretty sure with what technology can do...im pretty sure we can go down there and confirm if this is real or not...
p. 53: "In 1990 more the 4,000 homeless were ejected from the tunnels .. In a 2 block stretch of tunnels under the bowery there were as many as 200 people.. throughout manhattan over 7,000 homeless were transfered from tunnel to aboveground shelters in 1990, and another 4,000 in the first 4 months of 1991. A 1986 study for mayor's office estimated that 5,000 people lived in the subway system alone, a rough estimate at best. This figure did not count the homeless in the railway tunnels.
Only a small portion live many levels below the surface and never come up. They are the most frightening to her. It is important not to start characterizing the underground people as animalistic people, or crazy people, or all crack addicts. This only makes it easier to write them off.
The mole people are real, i just finished Toth's book. a part of it is that the underground homeless will sometimes give conflicting reports, or throw in exaggerated stories. And Toth points out when she thinks this is going on. But the book is a reliable sourece. The mole people come above ground regualrly, many hold jobs.
here in las vegas there is a decent sized community of homeless who live under the city. Last count i heard was estimated at 1200 or so. The tunnel system/wash run off system is quite expansive. About 500miles worth right now, the master plan will have 1,100mi. By 2021
u guys didnt go far enough. like someone else commented. smurf is probably tier 1, and of course he'd only say there was only 4 others. if i live there i wouldnt rat out my family. u didnt expect him to say yeah "right this way".
A french friend of miine did the first video doc It was. for France 2 TV about 13 yrs ago. She's a journalist, full bright scholar, anthropologist. She spent months down there. She really talked to people and took risks. Snaps: I don't do "research" on the web. I also don't believe everything i read/see on it. I use the web to see what's creeping into the minds of people too lazy to live in the real world.
There is also a documentary with a lady from France: Dans les entrailles de New York. It is in French but the people interview in English. Very real! if you are interested, it is in Dailymotion
It's impossible not to offend people when posting something on YouTube. People will always find reasons to be offended by anything... it's quite ridiculous. With that said, I found your video to be refreshingly funny. I've been living in Manhattan for 3 years and have never heard of the mole people until I read about them in a book I picked up recently - Weird New York. I found the subject to be very interesting to started researching them on the internet.
scag15, You've read books and done research on the internet about the Mole People. These guys actually went down into a old train tunnel and got photographic evidence and interviewed a primary source.
Smurf's testimony makes it clear: there isn't a "family" of homeless living underground in NYC, its just scattered individuals, maybe numbering in the hundreds. The video is satirizes the myth, not the people.
Finally, a video debunking the ridiculous "Mole People" myth. As an New Yorker, I'm sick and tired of hearing about the "tens of thousands" of people that live in NYC's subway system. Fuckin ridiculous.
I'm glad somebody finally took Jennifer Toth to task, as well. Just Google her name and you can find countless chapter-by-chapter debunkings of her mostly fraudulent book.
Is the video insensitive to homeless? Yes. But it's also hilarious, and I think Smurf would like it if he saw it!
As far as the intention to be an "entertainment" goes: it's less entertaining than jerry springer but not as entertaining as Michael Moore who manages to both inform and entertain. Christopher Guest? Why set the bar so low?
Jacob, there is no substitute for taking time and deep reflection to truly understand something. Life is not understood in 140 character bytes. It's also not truly communicated in a poor excuse for a "busting the myths mocumentary." The whole idea of "sharing" as opposed to truly passing on info or fact thru youtube, facebook, twitter, is a sham. It's encouraging that you went back to explore more deeply. I salute you for that. I hope you continue to go even deeper in all you want to understand.
That's why I went down there again after the doc, and travelled the whole length of the tunnel to take in every inch and crevice. I examined the entire area to understand the true nature of life down in this tunnel, so I could be informed, because we first went down there as part of a class assignment, not a mission to reorder the world. We're not Michael Moore here, more like Christopher Guest, so please lay off, and just take it at face value.
Guys, gut Lee a break. I also worked on the documentary, and it was not supposed to be an actual informative doc. it was supposed to be an entertaining piece on the nature of the myth of the mole people, which has reached such great heights of fabrication that it is just plain funny now. Actual homelessness is not funny.
I've seen an excellent doc. done by a couple of french guys. My question is, if you're just looking to see the so-called truth for yourself, even as an adventure, no one, why make a mockery of it? No. 2, why do you have to video tape it? Think of the Heisenberg principle, especially when you're not really taking time to see what's really going on. It's not a tourist attraction it's people's real lives.
We're not claiming it to be anything other than a group of college kids investigating an urban legend and trying to see for themselves the extent to which it is true. I will amend the video description so that is more clear.
1 We arent mocking the homeless or the truth. We're mocking the myth, and the misconceptions people have about the mole people
2 As Jacob explains this was actually for a class assignment. Thats an interesting use of the Heisenberg principle, I never thought of it that way
Your superficial attempt to inform people comes across as juvenile at best. The attempts at humor are incredibly annoying and make you seem like insensitive, stupid middle class white boys on a spree. None of your film is funny. Your mock disappointment at not finding anything but a guy with a lot of porno and weed is ridiculous, as are your shots of baby carriages, etc. These objects are the debris of interesting stories much more compelling than what you've presented here.
You're completely right, it is all of those things. For someone who is clearly well versed in the matter, I would suggest watching something a little more informative and relevant. This video is nothing more than 3 guys going on their own adventure, trying to find the truth for themselves. There is some sophomoric humor, and we don't do justice to the seriousness of the situation. But we're not trying to pass it off as anything but that.
This isn't the story of the mole people. It's the story of a group of people who, after a bit of research and trepidation, decide to find them. It is our story. And if you wait til the end you can hear Smurf tell his, in his own words. If you're looking for a compelling story about homeless people living in train tunnels for shelter, I'm sure you can find something more informative to watch. I've heard that 'Dark Days' is quite excellent, maybe try watching that.
When you think about it, you've probably spent more time working on computer to make the youtube video than actual time down there. Also, your disparaging remarks about jennifer toth are unfair, not to mention ridiculous considering the thought, time and effort that when into her work vs yours.
This views like a bunch of prep school boys who dipped their toe in the tunnel. The guy you interviewed is saying there's 4 guys down there to protect his brothers and sisters. Jennifer Toth did a serious study over a long time and developed real relationships with people, got (overly) involved as an anthropologist.
After seeing a bunch of Transient Youth today on St. Mark's place, i did a little research on homelessness and i came across this video. Still a problem and this recession isn't helping. I like the still photo approach. Pretty entertaining. Thanks for actually going down there and taking a look.
Oh, and is this "mocumentary" supposed to be satire? This isn't cool. This is very sad. My mom told me about this while we were riding the subway and I almost cried. WTF man...You're not funny, not even a little bit. I'd rather watch that lame ass Family Guy.
Apologies. This is not intended to misinform anyone, or to downplay the seriousness of the homeless problem.
We wanted to spread awareness, but at the same time we wanted it to be entertaining. Not offensive. If we inadvertently offended anyone with this video we apologize.
you are all dumb. clearly... though maybe arbitrary, they are disgusted by the society we live , cherish, and have our families. my friend simply didnt want his real voice to be used. and its not the voice that is important, it is rather the information that is.
i beleive theres more then 4..smurf is most likeily a first tier mole. i think the farther you go down into the subway tunnels the more you will find in the complex ways of the mole people.

Out of curiosity, do you know how many people actually live there? I can amend the video with an annotation at that part.
