Perfect example of not installing the HD tow hook brackets on an XJ!!!! Standard tow hooks will pull thru the unibody just like you saw! Removing the front bumper and installing the correct 1/4" thick steel HD brackets made for it with the 8grade bolts and 10,000lb tow hooks and then reinstalling the front bumper will not fail like you just saw!

One thing I have to say, is in the first part of the video, it does not look like -either- of your front tires were spinning. The left one looked like it was spinning after the break.
Since I do know know if you have the "Command-Trac" or "Selec-Trac", I do not know if you had it set correctly or if it is functioning properly.
The critics have no idea what they are talking about..
One thing you --may-- have not done correctly is inspect the recovery points, but the fact is, stuff breaks.
In theory, you should always pick a strap weaker than your tow hook. At first I thought you had a 2", but I see you had a 3 inch. That could have been a factor also.
A blanket would have been safer, but would not have stopped the headlight damage as that is not past the center of the strap for the broken hook to travel.
That really sucks, but this is a perfect example of the dangers. Good job staying out of the path. I've seen a lot of macho rednecks holding on to the strap...
use a 4wd jeez you dumb fuck...its basics in mud offroading for all types of vehicles...also use a RECOVERY strap...towing straps are super dangerous like the video shows
@TheCarnagehunts The jeep is a stock 4x4. The open differentials will often allow one tire on an axle to spin while the other stays still. Power goes to the wheel with the least traction. And its a keeper brand recovery strap. It does stretch about 20% according to the manufacturer. The tow hook on the blue jeep sheared off.
@iENJOIskating209 no???? AWD is completely different. AWD is an automatic feature in shit cars like Subaru outbacks where you dont have the free will to activate the feature, only when the tires begin to loose traction will AWD "kick in"
@RichieLT AWD is always on it doesnt 'kick in' if you dont believe me go lift up all four wheels on a AWD and put it in drive. AWD all your wheels spin at different speeds and have different power given to them.here in this video he might have a low and high range gear but if he doesnt have a CDL or lockers he has a AWD truck not 4wd because they dont have 50-50 power and all wheels dont have the same speed or power to them
@iENJOIskating209 exactly the tires that need it most will have a surge of power to them when they need it though. atleast we know that guy was wrong.
@blueridge4x4 looks like the front wheels arnt even turning, Maybe try using "part-time" or low range next time, it locks the centre diff, thats probably why only the rear are turning.. Just some friendly advice from a fellow Jeeper... :-)
Gotta love it when people use tow straps instead of RECOVERY straps that STRETCH AND DO A RUBBER BAND EFFECT WHICH DO NOT BREAK LIKE THIS. Using a Tow strap is dangerous as the video shows.
@NIZMOZ44 Its a Keeper brand 3" x 20' recovery strap. Great strap. Design allows it to stretch 20% according to the maker. Tow point sheared off on the blue jeep. Never use welded on hooks or subgrade bolts on tow hooks.
Recovery straps will break, and will cause damage like this though not as much as a metal hook. There is a huge myth that people think recovery straps won't snap back. THEY WILL! Think about it: If they act like rubber bands, they will snap back like a rubber band.
A lesson in pulling and winching a stuck jeep, ALWAYS I REPEAT, ALWAYS place a jacket or some other form of weight across the strap or cable just for cases like this. The weight will cause the cable/strap to drop to the ground instead of flying through the air.
@iENJOIskating209 I think you do not understand exactly how -basic- a jeep is. Its not a eurotrash yuppie car, most Jeeps have no CDL because there is NO CENTER DIFFERENTIAL TO LOCK! The transfer case has 4 positions, Neutral, Rear wheel drive only, Four wheel drive (front and rear axles locked together), and 4wd lock low range.
Some Jeeps have the center differential, and lock, that you speak of, but only the "fancy" ones. Most are only 2wd on pavement.
So was this using the stock Tow hooks? They have the bracket that ties into the frame.
Thanks

@blueridge4x4 if it has open diffs with no CDL its an AWD not a true 4x4.jeep needs to stop calling their AWD open diff truck 4x4 because their not
