I think Simo did a damn good job on this track. He can sing just as well as Mick and Joe. His style may be unconventional, but The Clash isn't the straightest nail in the wall.
paul is great, its good to see him singing and at the center of things. you can tell hes not used to it, cant play and sing at the same time even! lol
Simonon was just a joker, for girls. Sorry, but he wasn't a front leader like Joe, just what's we calling in Paris, a poser. I ever like the clash .....
@MyDenmon He never really tried to be, he didn't even wan't to sing this song, Joe just made him because he was the one that wrote it. According to him he just wanted to jump around on stage. A noble goal I have always thought. Cheers.
Don't The Clash know that the rules of rock 'n roll insist that you wear nothing but black on stage? And Paul doesn't always sing in key. It would work so much better if it was just pre-recorded, don't you think?
@zazfredi You missed the sarcasm by a mile. Do you think I care what The Clash wore on stage? Do you think I care whether Paul sings on key or not? Do you understand that one bar of a slightly out of tune Clash song buries what is being produced today? I was being sarcastic.
@superlou1s It was SARCASM. Sarcasm. Sarcasm. Sarcasm. It drips of sarcasm. I. didn't. mean. it. I was commenting on the cliche "rules" that supposedly edgy and radical performers follow as opposed to truly revolutionary artists like The Clash. Sarcasm. Sheesh.
Terry Chimes. He was actually their 1st drummer before Topper joined. He originally left because he didn't have the same "vision" as the rest of the band. Topper did. Unfortunately Topper got strung out on heroin so Terry Chimes rejoined. Then they threw Mick out and the rest is history.
@AndrewMHunter Yeah. Its Pete Howard. This is an unusual line up cos Mick left soon after and Vince White & Nick Sheppard replaced him. Most ppl think Pete joined at same time as them two but he was in slightly earlier. Terry Chimes came in for a little while when Topper got thrown out
Is there a version with Joe Strummer doing vocals?
Also, I really recommend people check out Die Toten Hosen's live unplugged version of this. They're an awesome German punk band with songs in German, but the singer sounds convincingly English in the cover of this song.
@TheBeatlelover999 he only plays guitar during the instrumental, so he doesn't have to play it when he sings, but the bass is played all the way through.
We can't all be those freaks of nature McCartney or Sting. Good bass highly counterpoint and plenty harder to sing to than strummering. Simenon's developed into a fine bassist but he had to learn on the job with the Clash from the ground up. ie one of us mere mortals despite his looks. Looking forward to seeing him and Mick with Gorillaz. Seeing the Clash in 81 in an acoustically highly-challenged venue was hard on the ears, although wouldn't have missed it for the world.
the probably figure since paul wrote the song that they should have his guitar part more loud then the bass. i guess they didnt get it that its about the bass line. but then again i mean were lucky to find this video, we could just be watching a cover.
nope, ska usually incorporates a high skanked offbeat guitar the guitar skanks in this song are on beats 2 and 4 in the verses, ska also is more focused towards horns and brass instruments. Theclash obviously do not primarily focus on brass.
@Khas101 It's really a mess to sing and play bass giitar together, instead it is a quite simple song, but the bassline is really far from the voiceline. Paul is like one of my classmates, always with the cigarette on his ear!
@Ddint93 He doesn't play the guitar and sing here. Notice he only strums when he isn't singing. I assume then you have a grand explanation for why he switches instruments on this song?
Clash made this song much better than the album version!!! Mick Jones is the best melodic punk lead guitarist!!! mostly in adding flavors in guitar adlibs! pretty amazing how his guitar goes starting 2:28 onwards!!! The clash is still indeed the only band that matters...
@mary18o3 yep! Indeed, Simonon wrote it all even the melodies. He also did all the instrument to it. He always play guitar during this live sessions coz he felt confusing singing while doing bass. the bass of this are contra-tempo with the melodies so definitely it hard to play along with bass. that's why Strummer does it.
Great song - sampled how many times? Pity though that Paul was so inept he couldn't play his bass line AND sing... and Joe doing the bass on this version is TOO LOW. Still class though. RIP Joe.
