No substance and no charisma?
I just came to listen to Michael Steel two days ago through YouTube, calling him "no substance and no charisma, a morally bankurpt" shows your credibility which is ZERO.
You may be a good rapper but your substance... is as tiny as your brain (in terms of judging Michael Steele as "no substance, no charisma,...morally bankrupt"
This country would be much better off if we have more leaders with understanding and committment like Michael Steel.
There's a difference between someone sharing a personal story of loss and someone making a completely ridiculous and illogical comparison. If the Nazi lady had initiated her screeching with a personal story of loss, I'm sure Barney Frank wouldn't have given her such a smackdown.
But the comparison of socialized health care and Nazism is stupid. Especially as socialized health care is used in many nations around the world, none of which are under a Nazi regime.
If we're all being real here and I do hope we are!
Let me just say the vast majority of Americans views are right in line with conservatives.
Doesn't matter what political party you claim do you really want to pump all your money into government funded programs? Lets be honest governments track record with public anything is shakey at best! look at the public school system how about the Tuskegee syphilis experiment? Republicans and Democrats talk a good game but the intentions are rarely pure.
Actually, when progressive issues are presented with conviction and clarity, people tend to gravitate toward them because a lot of the time they're common sense things (Don't spend money on a bomber we never used when you can spend it on something like education for the country's future or food stamps which stimulate the economy.) Conservatism on the other hand appeals to our self interested nature (I don't want my taxes spent on things that dont directly benefit me!) so it ebbs and flows.
The fact you had any sympathy for Michael Steele is proof that you did not live in Maryland when he was Lt. Governor and a senatorial candidate. We Marylanders have a long knowledge of the boring and vacuous nature of Mr. Steele. He has made a career of being GOP diversity, so why interfere with that by making sense or doing anything.
it's distinctly hilarious to watch republicans go on about how dissension is American when just 5 years ago, they were screaming at Democrats a nd the left-wing and telling them they were unamerican for questioning Bush.
they should definitely be questioning if they don't agree with Obama and healthcare reform, go for it. but you aren't any more american than anyone else in this country, you smug turds.
illdoc, don't you know? Whenever women and Democrats show emotion they're being irrational by definition. When Republicans show emotion it's because they're pretending they're sorry for schtupping a mistress or another guy and getting caught.

Great video. I have to say that like Steele said - people who try to enter political debates by irrationally yelling and screaming, waving protest signs, resorting to violence etc. fail to actually contribute to the debate and are ultimately wasting everyone's time because if the debate can't progress we can't reach a resolution, all they really show is that they're pissed off. However, that older footage shows Steele is clearly trying to have it both ways, and is therefore a douche

True, but she did attempt to cloud the debate by injecting emotion into it, which is fine to an extent but attempting to make debates overly emotional by saying things like "This plan will lose my brother his job....That idea will mean my father will die.... This policy means I'll lose my house" doesn't reeeeeaaaaalllllly help, making arguments like this is an attempt to produce an immediate emotional reaction in ppl which causes them to agree with you - such a reaction is an irrational one.
I doubt she was injecting emotion -- it appeared to me that she was honestly emotional about an issue that was tearing her and her family's lives apart, and fed up with the amount of bs she was hearing. Compare that emotion to the pure hate and fear of the other that you hear coming out of teabaggers and it's a breath of fresh air. Steele could easily have responded with compassion for her situation, rather than being a pedantic ass.
She was injecting emotion - just because you are 'honestly emotional' about an issue doesn't make you right. Getting emotional when debating topics of importance is ultimately a pointless exercise. Think about all the times you've ever been really pissed off - you become completely irrational and incapable of thinking straight. When import issues emotion needs to be kept well out of the picture cause 9/10 emotion takes you the wrong way. Maybe he should've shown some compassion but not much more
This is simply not true, emotion does not preclude rationality.. Some people have trouble arguing rationally while others are emotional, and many others do not (there's a classic Richard Pryor routine about this). In fact many of the most cogent arguments are delivered with strong emotion.
If you want to claim the woman was being irrational you need to cite specific things she said that were irrational.. Simply pointing out her emotion does nothing to discredit her argument.
Her argument went along the lines of "my poor mother is sick/dying and healthcare scheme x won't help her" such arguments are dangerous because they tap into the emotions of those who hear it (we feel sympathy for her) and risk causing us to lose sight of the big picture. To use a crude analogy imagine if we were arguing about vaccines and I said 'this vaccine killed my brother, we should get rid of all vaccines', using a close-to-home example might cause people to lose sight of the big picture
Think of the endless increase in severity of punishments dished out to criminals for example. We see a horrible crime and have an emotional reaction it it - we instantly desire revenge, but this causes us to lose sight of the BIG picture - how to stop crime in the first place, how to stop recidivism etc. I dunno, maybe emotional arguments is an American thing but in Europe and co. if u enter into an argument using the same tone & emotion as this woman most people will refuse to listen to you.
I think a better example to consider would be Bush's speeches during the period when he was trying to generate support for his desire to invade Iraq. If you look at the language he used 'this is are war against terror, a fight of good against evil, think of all the people who died in 9/11' he was tapping into people's emotions - emotions which were particularly raw following 9/11. People's minds were taken away from the objective facts of the situation, & we all know how that all turned out
A better way to go about it would be to cite statistics or something like that. Because ultimately (and unfortunately) there's always someone who 'loses' when new policies are implemented, so to talk about one individual who is adversely affected by a new policy isn't going to get anywhere, we need to look at the bigger picture - like just think about that Jo The Plumber crap that got wheeled out last election, that's pretty much the same cheap ploy this woman was trying to implement.
This is how I feel too. Michael Steele is just sort of lovable in how unintentionally hilarious he is, and he seems to at least mean well. The problem is he's kind of dumb.
Man, you gotta get that new external hard drive. I enjoy your videos and would like to see new ones more often!
Entertaining and informative, great video. It's sick that he tried to "serve" a girl clearly upset about her mothers treatment. But hey that's politics for you.
I think having no charisma and no substance just makes you bankrupt, period, except if you're a token for the GOP. Then you can roll. They're are plenty of people with some combination of style and substance that are plenty morally bankrupt.
Further, please stop trashing Humpty Hump by comparing him to Michael Steele. I mean, he does LOOK like Humpty, but imagine a world where the GOP pushing a bill mandating the Humpty Dance rather than lining the pockets of insurance co's...
I dunno--in an age where every 'righteous' poltician turns out to be a sleazy hypocrite, I can easily envision Michael Steele having a secret fetish for gangsta rap.
As to the morally bankrupt part, I'll admit to not getting that it was a joke, but I did get what you meant. Thank you for doing what you do!
great vid ... politicians are shallow hypocritical asses that dance to whatever jig yields them more points.
politicians never admit being in the wrong, because they believe or act like they're always in the right. And ppl who contradict must obviously be in the wrong.
This dude u showed was either afraid of losing face or answering the question. Makes me sick thinking these kind of ppl are run the country.
Good video. The explanation for what Steele did is simply IOKIYAR (It's OK If You Are A Republican). They will continue practicing their inconsistency and their double standards unless we call them on it every single time they try that BS.
i don't even know how Michael Steele fails to realize that he is a puppet, solely appointed to his post as a direct correlation (and counterpoint) to Obama's rise to the political mountaintop. like Palin, this man has nothing to say, and even if he did, he'd have no way to articulate it. hell, give me Limbaugh, or some other Republican loudmouth. yes they are completely grating and possibly hateful--but at least i know where they stand.
Mr Steele realizes that he's just playing the role of "yes, massah", but he has been doing this through his whole political career. I see him saying a lot more than Palin and he does have some substance in his words...sadly its mostly right wing rubbish. He basically stands on the side of capitalism. Wherever a greenback can be made, no matter who gets disenfranchised, he will be the mouthpiece. He's just another example of a person who is truly living it up in Uncle Tom's cabin.
Wow, did Mr. Steele bring out the infamous tone argument instead of just answering the question? This lady was chill compared to the way republicans get on at these things. My respect for him just below the zero mark.
Wow, good job Michael, don't respond to the lady directly, lighten everything up with some upliting words of wisdom, and then casually insult the woman who's only pointing out the truth. Straight out of the Fox News scroll of BS right there....
Wait what? I've recognized you as a smart guy, so when you equated charisma and substance with morality you did take by surprise. What were you-... how-... dude! Please explaine!
That part lost me too. Maybe he's saying that people with no substance and no charisma have no place in public office and for them to knowingly occupy such a position is dishonest to themselves and their constituents.
But Steele was appointed by his party... so ... I don't know.
first of all kudos for sitting through that entire town hall. Second, he was freaking rude, but he has a point. if you want to speak to people in politics you have to do it in such a way that the only way they can segway into being condescending is after the commercial break.
Yeah, minus the fact that you saw a clip of him going "Ra-Ra" over people doing the same thing..... But when someone does it to him it's a problem? Chooses a lane and drive in it please!
Why does dullness & hypocrisy continue to wow us as if they're never anticipated? It's part of the political game. They don't need to watch their words- the American public means nothing.
The voters don't count- only those that count those votes. Gov't makes u pay taxes no matter the cost. You HAVE to pay or be sent to prison- the end.
And ppl still exist believing their voices can be heard. Your peers listen, not the superpower.
Token makes me SICK... I lost all respect for him after his last appearance on Bill Maher. He is just a big dumb bully. Very rude, and disrespectful... Particularly to black people including Kerry Wasington. Yep... Kerry Washington!

Let's see. This woman makes an honest if emotional appeal to both anecdote and statistics and gets a cold reception.
This summer a woman compares health care reform to Nazism and gets a "what planet are you on?" reception.
I don't see how anyone could sympathize more with Michael Steele than with Barney Frank, given the circumstances the two were confronted with.

Compare that emotion to the pure hate and fear of the other that you hear coming out of teabaggers and it's a breath of fresh air. Steele could easily have responded with compassion for her situation, rather than being a pedantic ass.
MissNormaDesmond 2 years ago
She was injecting emotion - just because you are 'honestly emotional' about an issue doesn't make you right. Getting emotional when debating topics of importance is ultimately a pointless exercise. Think about all the times you've ever been really pissed off - you become completely irrational and incapable of thinking straight. When import issues emotion needs to be kept well out of the picture cause 9/10 emotion takes you the wrong way. Maybe he should've shown some compassion but not much more
harrow555555 2 years ago
This is simply not true, emotion does not preclude rationality.. Some people have trouble arguing rationally while others are emotional, and many others do not (there's a classic Richard Pryor routine about this). In fact many of the most cogent arguments are delivered with strong emotion.
If you want to claim the woman was being irrational you need to cite specific things she said that were irrational.. Simply pointing out her emotion does nothing to discredit her argument.
illdoc1 2 years ago 14
Her argument went along the lines of "my poor mother is sick/dying and healthcare scheme x won't help her" such arguments are dangerous because they tap into the emotions of those who hear it (we feel sympathy for her) and risk causing us to lose sight of the big picture. To use a crude analogy imagine if we were arguing about vaccines and I said 'this vaccine killed my brother, we should get rid of all vaccines', using a close-to-home example might cause people to lose sight of the big picture
harrow555555 2 years ago
Think of the endless increase in severity of punishments dished out to criminals for example. We see a horrible crime and have an emotional reaction it it - we instantly desire revenge, but this causes us to lose sight of the BIG picture - how to stop crime in the first place, how to stop recidivism etc. I dunno, maybe emotional arguments is an American thing but in Europe and co. if u enter into an argument using the same tone & emotion as this woman most people will refuse to listen to you.
harrow555555 2 years ago
I think a better example to consider would be Bush's speeches during the period when he was trying to generate support for his desire to invade Iraq. If you look at the language he used 'this is are war against terror, a fight of good against evil, think of all the people who died in 9/11' he was tapping into people's emotions - emotions which were particularly raw following 9/11. People's minds were taken away from the objective facts of the situation, & we all know how that all turned out
harrow555555 2 years ago

But hey that's politics for you.

axioms22 2 years ago 3
I think having no charisma and no substance just makes you bankrupt, period, except if you're a token for the GOP. Then you can roll. They're are plenty of people with some combination of style and substance that are plenty morally bankrupt.
Further, please stop trashing Humpty Hump by comparing him to Michael Steele. I mean, he does LOOK like Humpty, but imagine a world where the GOP pushing a bill mandating the Humpty Dance rather than lining the pockets of insurance co's...
aozoratenshu 2 years ago
lol.. I think it's safe to say Michael Steele never got busy in a Burger king Bathroom.
I hope people did realize the "morally bankrupt" part was a joke? :)
illdoc1 2 years ago
I dunno--in an age where every 'righteous' poltician turns out to be a sleazy hypocrite, I can easily envision Michael Steele having a secret fetish for gangsta rap.
As to the morally bankrupt part, I'll admit to not getting that it was a joke, but I did get what you meant. Thank you for doing what you do!

Michael Steele = Humpty Hump of the GOP
Ironic how many middle American people love the Humpty Dance, but have no idea what HipHop consists of...alarming parallels.

great vid ... politicians are shallow hypocritical asses that dance to whatever jig yields them more points.
politicians never admit being in the wrong, because they believe or act like they're always in the right. And ppl who contradict must obviously be in the wrong.
This dude u showed was either afraid of losing face or answering the question. Makes me sick thinking these kind of ppl are run the country.
A necessary evil? I wonder sometimes ...

Good video. The explanation for what Steele did is simply IOKIYAR (It's OK If You Are A Republican). They will continue practicing their inconsistency and their double standards unless we call them on it every single time they try that BS.
Dan210871 2 years ago
i don't even know how Michael Steele fails to realize that he is a puppet, solely appointed to his post as a direct correlation (and counterpoint) to Obama's rise to the political mountaintop. like Palin, this man has nothing to say, and even if he did, he'd have no way to articulate it. hell, give me Limbaugh, or some other Republican loudmouth. yes they are completely grating and possibly hateful--but at least i know where they stand.
dontyoudar 2 years ago 3
Mr Steele realizes that he's just playing the role of "yes, massah", but he has been doing this through his whole political career. I see him saying a lot more than Palin and he does have some substance in his words...sadly its mostly right wing rubbish. He basically stands on the side of capitalism. Wherever a greenback can be made, no matter who gets disenfranchised, he will be the mouthpiece. He's just another example of a person who is truly living it up in Uncle Tom's cabin.

True eloquence consists in saying all that is necessary, and nothing but what is necessary. You always do both. Respect.

What were you-... how-... dude! Please explaine!
iorbit 2 years ago
That part lost me too. Maybe he's saying that people with no substance and no charisma have no place in public office and for them to knowingly occupy such a position is dishonest to themselves and their constituents.
But Steele was appointed by his party... so ... I don't know.
Still a great video, though!

first of all kudos for sitting through that entire town hall. Second, he was freaking rude, but he has a point. if you want to speak to people in politics you have to do it in such a way that the only way they can segway into being condescending is after the commercial break.
still rude tho

Why does dullness & hypocrisy continue to wow us as if they're never anticipated? It's part of the political game. They don't need to watch their words- the American public means nothing.
The voters don't count- only those that count those votes. Gov't makes u pay taxes no matter the cost. You HAVE to pay or be sent to prison- the end.
And ppl still exist believing their voices can be heard. Your peers listen, not the superpower.
Sucks..
