  • And I hit the same brick wall...

Is there anything I can do

    about anything at all?

    Fantastic lyrics!

  • What an outrageous debate. We have one of each, and only one . What the fuck is the point of such a debate? This woman is a genius - are you listening? how do you listen to this and get lost in a conversation like this? Oh why do I read the comments, why.

  • @rashedly uhh because other genius exist? I love both...but don't think a comparison is off the wall. Ani owns lyrically all the way. Alanis owns vocally- and isn't a bad writer herself but not on Difranco's level.

  • cvcvxzZXcZ

  • she rocks

  • I love Ani Difranco. One of the few artists unafraid to sing about what they feel passionate about. She's original and spunky and has so many incredible songs.

I love Alanis as well, I think they are both great artists, I don't understand why one must be classified as better than another. I think they are both spectacular artists who bring much needed sass and honesty to an otherwise repetitive and boring musical scene.

  • @shatteredeyes

I think it's because ani is in her own category. she owns it, there is no one else in it.

alanis you could put in with tori amos and similar artists, she's got company in her section whereas ani is alone.

  • seriously, feminist are crazy.....really freakin nuts

  • @mailmanofdeth radical feminist are sorta insane (they read patriarchy in everything)- rational one's are fine.

  • pissing into the wind: Ani is the best female singer songwriter since Joni Mitchell.

  • @ApollonianKing meh...have to say since patti smith.

  • cool!

  • I don't even know why people try and compare Ani and Alanis anyway. They're two totally different people with different values, stories and musical styles. i guess it could be said there are similarities between the two, but in my opinion there's just no comparison

  • I don't even know why people try to compare Ani and Alanis. They're two completely different people with different stories, different values and different musical styles. I guess there could be some similarities, but In my opinion there's just no comparison.

  • haha, i love how andy says "annie di-fronco" at the beginning

  • What's that song by Alanis that I love? Oh, yeah, Straightjacket:)

You can't dog Alanis just 'cuz you put her next to Ani..she was God on Dogma, for crying out loud.

  • Why does people always have to compaire female artists. Few people do the same to male artists. And isn't music just about art? And isn't it impossible to say what is art, and what is not? And isn't taste individual?

  • @Bollemedrosiner

what do you mean few do the same to male artist? male artist are compared to other male artist all the damn time. please.

  • Alanis V. Ani? Really? They're kinda similar but not that much. Ani's kinda old school and indie. Alanis puts a bit more punk in her stuff, and she's gone mainstream, Some of Alanis' new stuff is just trash. Ani stays amazing.

  • Really? honestly take Red letter year and play it Next to Flavors of Entanglement- Ani's latest was a snooze fest with the exception of about 3e tracks while the Alanis album was her best since the 90's.

Listen to these tracks and compare:

    Alanis: citizen of the Planet

    Ani: smiling underneath.

  • I stand semi-corrected.

  • are you insane...alantis is good, but Ani freakin rocks...man no comparison Ani takes it Hands Down!!!

  • @floralmichelle

again on grounds of lyrical content yes...vocal range and singing ability in general not so much.

  • I think they are too much similar....and that's the reason they'll never be absolute stars

  • @bludrugo29

what are you talking about? both are absolute stars and artist.

  • My opinion on the Ani vs. Alanis debate.

It doesn't matter, who's better, or who you like more. At the end of the day, there's Ani and there's Alanis and we can all be thankful that they both produced some very nice songs, that have helped people during different times in their lives.

No matter how strongly you feel about any issue, there will always be someone opposing you who feels as strongly.

I'm not saying you can't compare, it's just a waste of time. And terribly subjective.

  • @fadedkeys

I love alanis but she is in no way in the same category as ani, ani plays and sings, alanis is a great writer but she didn't innovate a playing style.

  • @llel11 Yeah don't get me wrong- lyrically you CANNOT top Ani...Playing the Guitar you CANNOT top ani..but vocally? Thats where Alanis mops the floor. Ani is in her own category...but I don't think it's too far removed from Patti Smith.

  • i have gone to a concert of alanis and i have gone to 3 ani´s concerts...i like both but ani is really a better artist. over all because she is REAL... when you are in an ani´s concert you can feel her, touch her, she listens to you, you can talk to her, she is not the "artist" on a stage, shes is just a real person playing music...shes really an example for the whole musical world..

  • I have been to one concert of each artist- But just because someone makes contact with the audience doesn't do a thing for their singing voice. Ani like previous poster have said doesn't really have the Vocals morissette does. Lyrically Ani takes the cake- she is blunt , honest , politcal and emotional (However I have to say as poetry goes Morissette's lyrics are more beautiful.). But her singing? Not that great.

  • Honestly to me ani's songs arent even songs in the traditional sense anyway. They are more like poems with music playing in the background. That is what I love about her.

  • alanis is average compared to ani....to even compare the 2 is a joke

  • not at all. it's funny when people who have obviously little to no knowledge of Alanis try to pitch in their opinion. Get an educated guess (Like the pun?). Listen to Uninvited, Citizen of the Planet, Baba,Still. It's personal, political ect. How is the comparison a joke? I may not agree with it- but to discredit Alanis...well at least be familiar with her work. Im familiar with Ani's and can actually have an opinion on it.

  • First of we call them opinions. Secondly how do you know what I know about Alanis ? I have seen the 2 live and it's in my opinion Alanis doesn't compare.Look how many albums Ani has churned out.....how long she's been touring.Busting her ass until she had her own record label to put her music on.Without the radio or MTV to help her sell records. She a much more talented guitar player . Her lyric's are the most underrated of the 1990's. Sorry my opinion...alanis can't even sniff ani...

  • Guitar? Ani. Lyrics: Ani (although Alanis seems to be more poetic) Vocally: Alanis No comparison Ani sing talks Alanis can actually hit notes. Sure Ani has been going strong since 89(alanis came on the scene in 1991)with her album of the week method. If you ask me it's overkill thats why out of her 19 albums only about 6 are worthwhile.

  • ani is a fantastic guitar player. Shes a good singer too.

I agree though about most of her music. I only like a select number of songs

  • "I was Hoping" Honestly just listen to that song here on youtube live and tell me that Alanis is a mere average artist. 4 minutes of your life-you might be at least alittle more apt to speak agaisnt alanis after that song.

  • alanis sucks..end of story

  • seven grammy's and thriteen juno's would say otherwise- and you really can't blame that on her being popular because lets face it she really isn't.

  • Comment removed

  • ...you know she never sued her fans or anything right? I mean you can google it there isn't a record of anything like that.

  • strange i cant find anything about it either. I was told by a bootleg trader friend of mine that told me she sued a fan for sharing live recordings(non official recordings audience/mixing desk etc)

  • Ani is the original

  • The Orginal Ani Difranco sure. But she isn't the orginal Alanis morissette or vice versa.

  • IMHO Alanisis a great artist, and I enjoy her music. I think that like Ani she has a wicked sense of irony that comes thru in her music(even tho she doesn't seem to know the meaning of the word). She IS individual, there isn't anyone quite like her. That being said I don't understand how anyone can compare her 2 Ani. Ani has contiually reinvented herself over the years. Folk, Jazz, Blues, Rock. She has a very eclectic style that continously surprizes me. The same can not be said for Alanis.

  • To all the people who are trying to compare Ani to Alanis, or Vice Versa...Don't because the two are in totally different categories, both are amazing, but Ani is definitely in a league of her own here. AH-Mazing!

  • She's coooool ;)

  • exept all the radios agree with all the tv s and the magazines agree with all the radios and i keep hearing that same damn song

  • I love Ani, but I think I like the album version better.... but she still rocks....

  • As A Budding Ani Fan Im Gonna Have Some Balls and Ask Witch Was Her Best Album...

PLEASE! Leave acomment on my page Thank You.

  • I have all of her studio albums. For a long time I didn't have a favorite because I love them all, but at this point I would say KNUCKLE DOWN.

  • Her BEST album, PUDDLE DIVE... Im wanna open a bar in P-Town with that name.... Hit me up, I now ALL things ANI...

  • Mick342 looking for a few rex:

Living In Clip=excellent suggestion (so good!)

I would highly recommend DILATE (my 1st), as well as: (equally I think) NOT A PRETTY GIRL, OUT OF RANGE, and LITTLE PLASTIC CASTLE. Oh heck, PUDDLE DIVE, Up Up Up..., ANI DIFRANCO, and LIKE I SAID are all brilliant as well. U can't go wrong. If you really want, message me and we can work something out. I'd be happy 2 share a few of my albums with you (free-ish); maybe I'd just ask postage or maybe I'd throw it in!

  • i like stray cats

  • Every work of art is derived from personal experience, and past influences, be it people, or music. There is originality in every song, but there is also influence. Both Ani and Alanis matured in their music over the years, and you can tell. Ani is a poet, and Alanis can manipulate her voice to do whatever she wishes. Both are remarkable artists.

  • I think Both have amazing lyrics. And Alanis has a better voice.

  • I don't get the negative comment. I mean thats fandom clouding your ears if you think Difranco is a better vocalist than Morissette. Just like it's fandom if you think Morissette has better lyrics- be objective people.

  • Alanis does have a better voice. I saw her in concert. It was a great concert.

  • if anything...alanis is trying to mimick Ani's sound...not the other way around. I mean, please, Ani had been around for 5 years before we even knew who Alanis was.

Both are great musicians, but I think Ani is more original and has more depth to her.

  • I agree. I like both, but Alanis is much more mainstream and pop. Ani definitely has a more distinct and original sound. I really like her spoken-word songs. No one does that poetry-jam style like her.

  • One of my dear friend splayed this song for me today, this being the first time and song i'ev ever heard of hers. You folks comparing her to alanis are funny. I felt very moved by this song, and i hate alanis morisette song because of their lyrical content not the style of music.

  • Alanis Morissette has amazing lyrics and depth. Same for Ani.

Are you even familiar with Morissette????

  • alanis is far from cool!!!

    ani is the best ever....period.

  • ok, Alanis is cool. Don't get me wrong. But Righteous Babe Records Ani, playing little 300 seat venues, trying to sound like Alanis? Who the F(iretr)uck is high here?

  • Alanis is nice and easy if you think Ani is trying to follow Alanis trail....go out..smell the street ..finish a burbon bottle ..and a street fight..and give me the best sorrow you can found..out of your your limited fire..my pain is your and yours mind..cmon friend night is young ..but story is already bound..your way..my way..it is just begun

  • yeah really dumb considering that Ani is both olde than Alanis and they both released their first albums in the same year.

  • ahaha.. thank you for that little bit of unintentional humor.. claim that a woman who has remained independent for years is "just trying to make money by sounding like alanis" and then say someone else made a stupid comment in two consecutive posts might just be perfect irony

  • Ani keeping it real, as always!

  • I love Ani!!! I love how every song that is the same never is! She is always mixing it up a bit. Man woody is an ass.

  • My dad can beat up your dad.

  • Goes right over the head, don't it?

  • She was around before Alanis Morrissette and Korn, so I guess you're wrong.

  • Honestly...I would like you to come up with something as meaningful and provocative and intelligent as Ani. Her lyrics are inspirational and inspire change. There isn't one Ani Difranco song that I dont like...and I am a professional musician and study music in school

  • Vote Dennis Kucinich in your state primary!

    Peace Ani!!

  • Ani's my hero!

  • Mine too :)

  • What a fun version. XD

  • thanks so much for posting this!

i looped the music from her album and performed this song when i ran for winter carnival queen. i didn't win. hahaha

  • she does sing a lot haha. just not in this one. she has some poetry mixed in w/her songs.

  • she's got great and meaningful lyrics - but i must say that i don t really like her music - she should sing and not talk

  • 'Choose between the colours on the lipsticks on the whores', one of my favourite lines.

  • It must kick ass to be close friends with Ani.

  • my hairstylist is, I think :)

  • God, she is gorgeous!

    <3

  • really awesome. thanks. must say tho, ani is evolving always and i, personally, could not pick a best year nor album nor tour for her. she is still an amazing performer.

  • Man, she still rocks. Haven't heard this song in so long... and remembered EVERY WORD!

  • Thanks for posting this. I cannot even think of how many times I have listened to this song.

  • Do you have no other life? - you have made some nasty useless comment on almost every Ani video I've watched and I have to tell you, you are nowhere near the talent Ani is, so, please, crawl back into your hole.

  • what the fuck??

which ones haven't I commented on?

  • Hmm, genius, if you hate her so bad, here's a tip: Don't watch her videos! *gasp* Crazy, right?

  • LOL word... i love the ani haters, they crack me up...

  • Unlike the majority of the those in the biz, Ani writes, performs, and produces her own art and dissent. Most so-called musicians can't walk and chew gum at the same time. Your low ball reference to her appearence just validates her points...but you wouldn't understand.

  • you're an idiot...for real.

  • Shame on you D! If you don't like her then don't watch/listen to her. Save your hate for other, more useful purposes...

  • this video was part of a project that was finished by only one of the three original members of this film crew... it was actually meant as only a proposal for righteous babe records to see the potential of the filmmakers in the interest of continued backing for the project... it's interesting that it would wind up on youtube... ultimately the project did see fruition as a result of hilary goldberg's efforts in ani difranco's "render," which has been out on dvd for some time...

  • awesome video there, great editing, great performance of one of my favourite ani songs... nice one.

what was this originally filmed for?

  • Its a long story Mark, but the gist is me and 2 friends from Uni got it into our heads that we were going to go make a movie about Ani. We met her manager by chance one day on a park bench in NYC and the rest is history. This video was edited by us using the footage gathered during a 6 day leg of her Living in Clip tour starting in Austin and ending in New Orleans.

  • God, that must have been so amazing . . . that was an amazing tour. I "met" Ani in her hotel that tour; she was so kind to my friend and me.

  • it would be really nice to have the embed URL.

  • never seen this before would have liked the embed tho

  • sorry no can do for now. maybe in the future

  • Totally awesome!

  • This is amazing...out of curiousity, how were you lucky enough to get your hands on it?

  • i helped make it

  • thanks for this video! i've never seen it before.
