Sorry. Also in real life, in mermaids situation we have 3 Choices to choose from. We fight our love with hate, we chose death by free will, and we let us carry by the wind to find higher answers to be able to grow in person and regain our selfbeing.

Not only she didn't kill him but she saved the prince's life with her death. The ship would have bumped into that rock, so she turned into lilies to prevent that. Well I think that guy didn't deserve her sacrifice. He said over and over again that he would marry her yet he changed her for the first princess passing by. :(
@LudmorHun i think you misunderstood there something ... in the end they all died not just the mermaid but also the people on the ship... they just didn't show it cause its a kids movie but in the song they sing at the end they sing bout how the ship smash's against the cliff and the prince died
@jukori I always thought that it's quite cruel for a kids movie (I was afraid of it as a kid), so if the makers meant to have the prince die, I think they would have shown it. But it is clearly visible, that the flowers stop the ship.
I don't understand the song, but it might be a mistake. Do they sing the same in the Czech version?
@jukori Actually, he is right - her love is so great, that even in death she rescues him one last time. hence the lilies - she was supposed to turn into sea foam only. If you pay attention, you see that the ship stops nearing the rocks. Naturally could the sea king kill them nevertheless if he really wants, but it looks like he accepts her decision in the end.

I#m afraid not. In Christian Andersens original version she becomes a sylph, and works for receiving an immortal soul. Nevertheless it doesn't change that she dies in this version.
But when I read it the Sylph-part just seemed to be out of place...
There's no way to prove it now, but I think he included the Sylphs later on, so the story wouldn't be too depressing. It took him almost a year to finish it, and he said himself that he suffered with the characters. That't why i think he changed it when he noticed it was a little harsh.
I so want to hear the song the little mermaid sings..I've not seen this since a child but I remember the song. Please could you upload the whole thing..PLEASE
It was a co-production with Czechoslovakia, from what I understand. The Czech actors spoke their language, the German actors spoke theirs, and depending on where it was broadcast they got dubbed into the local language.

Why do so many cool things just happen to be Czech?
Does anyone have subtitles to this movie?
Hat jemand Undertitel für diesen Film?

I think this "happy ending" was added later on, because no one liked the unhappy one :P

no...the original ending was the end with the sylphs.

He changed sylph ending later to a victorian style.good children make the mermaid suffer 1 year less, and bad one year more.
He claims the Sylph part was his original intent which you can see from his handwritten version.
More points that contribute to the sylph end.
1. It conforms to Paracelsus
2. The ending without will give the witch a triumph. What kind of fairy tale is that.
3. Death cannot be the ultimate answer to true love we seek. The sylphs ending is an important solution..

AAHA!
