His Beowulf rocked my world, I love it from the first word to the last (but especially the first).
Also, Digging is just amazing. I used to recite it to my late grandfather, so it has special significance to me beyond just being one of the greatest poems to read aloud I've ever come across.
Check out the work of Irish poet Patrick Lewis Strachan. He's new on the scene, but there hasn't been a poet of that calibre since William Blake. Strachan's poems, The Imperial Heart, The Partisan & The Testimony of Night are each a poetic masterpiece, three of the finest poems I've ever read. A master poet, up there with Heaney, Yeats, Larkin & Blake...however, you'll need a strong gut to read this man's work: he's not like the others...so, so dark & menacing & angry.
LMAO! Oh you just dont know how much I needed a laugh this morning! ...but C'mon now. Charlie has cool guests and its an intelligent show without being snobby. Ya dig?.....but thank you for the laugh. So bluntly stated.
Sorry I'm not saying anything about his work, I may not sound too considerate or serious, but I think he looks a little bit Asian. just like J. Lennon, don't you think?
Well maybe, but I just think it encompasses so much, so subtly. The perennial misunderstandings of humanity, our inability to truly comprehend eternity, our calling to nothingness and the expectation of a response. I was recently at ground zero and this poem just went round and round in my head.
Much as I love Leonard Cohen,it simply wouldn't be accurate to say that he, or even Heaney for that matter, has written anything comparable to Geoffrey Hill's The Triumph of Love.
I am afraid that the words and ideas of the Northern Irish Republic poet are well above and beyond most "casual" readers.

Yeah, I was shocked when I saw his photo. He looks a little bit Mongolian and it is possible that he has that lineage.

the tollund man IS the poem of the 20th century. He will only be truly appreciated when he is dead.
