December 2011, talksport monday nght they were discussing this match NEARLY 30 YEARS LATER! no match could be so influential even with all the racism and rubbish that happens now that's what makes this game BEST EVER! C'mon the azzurri!
I remember this match well (I was 14). The ingredients for a legend were all there: a team that performed poorly in the initial stages and on which no one would have bet a penny , a striker coming back from a 2 years ban facing possibly the best Brazilian team of all times. And then the magic happened, and with a hat trick from the "out of form" guy. Everything went beyond anyone's fantasy. Truly the best game of the WC history ... and 30 years on we're still here debating about it.
In my opinion, the 1982 Italian team was the greatest Italian team of all time because they went on the most improbable run ever. They proved that it is not how you start, it is how you finish. They got off to a poor start in the group stage, and they finished strong. Their victory over Brazil, without question, was THE defining moment of the tournament, and they went on to win the 1982 World Cup. That match is definitely one of the greatest games ever simply because Italy played to win.
Italy must never win this match. Brasil 82 was the best team ever. Rossi one of the less talented player ever should never had participated to this WCup (what a scandal... another one before 2006). I can now understand why Italy has won title : luck, luck, luck and luck. I never watched a good game with Italy involved actually...
@fksaks You talk nonsense. Italy beat Agentina, Brazil and West Germany to claim this title - if Brasil were so good they should have beat Italy but they failed. As for scandals, perhaps you should see whats been happening in Brazil and South America over the last 30 years with match fixing - and if you havent watched a good game with Italy involved you must be blind. only a loser would claim Italy didnt desrve this win.
Only an italian man may think that Italy is a good team. Let's be honest ! Well, I must admit that my father think they are a great team... but he is Italian ;-)
@fksaks I never claimed Italy are a good team (I'll ignore that they have won 4 World Cups, and been Runners Up twice). What I am saying is that yes Brazil had a great team in 1982 but so too did Italy. If you look at the history of World Cup soccer you will often find that the best team don't necessarily win. Italy had a great team in 1990 but didnt make the Final, then in 2006 they had a crappy team but won. It doesnt always follow a script.
You r right actually. Brazil in 1982 had perhaps the greatest team never to win the World Cup, and as a Dutchman I probably should give that honour to Holland 74 - but Italy most definitely had a fantastic team too. They played poor in the group phase, but Italy have always been slow starters at major tournaments. I can recite their fantastic team in my sleep - Rossi, Conti, Antognoni, Scirea, Tardelli etc they were all world class players who peaked at the right time.
I clearly remember rushing home from work.About 15 mins gone,1 nil italy then just enjoying to my mind the best football game in history.Anybody disagree ?.
@lamer63leg No, you are definitely correct. I watch it often (and somehow hope for a different outcome!) But no matter how often I watch it, it never ceases to be brilliant. Italy weren't the best team on the day, but were worthy winners, and it was only right that they went on to win the 82 world cup.
@lamer63leg It was a privilege to have seen it as a 14 year old. Often during that tournament i rushed home from somewhere or other trying to catch some match or what was left of it. You had this sense that this was a tournament apart and it was.
World Cup 1982 was one of the best world cup ever play in World Cup History. Famous players and teams became favourites and icons around the world. And 2nd round match between Brazil & Italy was the best of all.
how did they loose this i still remember watching this as a kid and still today after the doctor has passed away i still dont get it one the greatest teams not to win the world cup.
R.I.P. Socrates, condolences from Russia, you were one of the greatest players of all times, your play was unforgettable and inspiring for generations of soccer fans around the world. I will never forget the loss to Italy, this was the greatest match of all, so was Brazil, then again so was Italy...
The best world cup game I have ever watched, remember running home from school to watch this, my brother was cheering for Brazil and I wanted Italy to win. Never forgot this game, either team could have won it, if only Brazil had had a half decent striker they would have won the world cup that year. So sad to hear of the doctors passing, the word "world class" is used far to often these days but Socrates was a world class midfielder.... Thanks for the memories... RIP Big Man
Socrates' goal:File under Magical.Brazil 1982 just football perfection but well done to Dino Zoff that day,he was outstanding, great goalkeeper.Memorable match, surely the most thrilling game of all time but the worst tragedy of the 20th century. This match had everything, the best goal I have ever seen Socrates' goal(Falcao's goal also was pure Brazilian genius)and the best save I've ever seen,Zoff's save at the end on the line from Oscar's bullet header.Extraordinary game between 2 fine teams.
antognoni's 4th goal was legit and should have definitely been allowed. right before the pass was made to antognoni before he scored we has onside with the last brazlian defender to the right of where the pass was made. stupid ref was looking at the brazilian defender closest to antognoni and not th last brazilian defender. i swear refs can be idiots sometimes and these stupid mistakes by them have cost many teams. blatter should allow offsided to be challenged similar to the new goal line rule.
Such a classic game in every sense. Even morally. In recent times I would have say that the 2005 Champions League final which was played beautifully and with out one player getting a card of any sort & the today's Barcelona team should be compared to this beauty.
A great game and Italy deserved to win, positive attacking football, no play acting, cheating, abusing officials like todays game, the 1982 world cup was one of the best (and I'm English).
@connoisseurnic Did you ever read that book by Gianluca Vialli about English and Italian soccer? A great read if you are a fan of English and Italian style of playing. As well, I am Italian and the way the English play is amazing in its own rite!
@connoisseurnic maybe you hadn't seen what tricks made Gentile to Zico to stop his play and the ref seemed not to give a damn about it. Gentile was also there when he ripped Mardonna's shirt... And what really deserved Brazil during this game is their goalkeeper Peres and their striker (no-striker) Serginho...too much below the level...I remember this game because that day, when Falcao stroke, I jumped and my head met the window's shutter... I can almost feel the edema pulsing again...
One of the best Games in history of football. Brazil Play a magic game. Italy was lucky from the beginning. Finishing second place in Group A of the world cup1982. they with 3 points barely qualify for a second round just because they had an advantage of one gole over Peru. I remember this game Like today, Thanks god Italy Had Dino Zoff, And Brazil Had Horrible Goalkeeper, Perez..This is the best Brazilian team i have seen.
@hyperboreean Brazil had a horrible defence and if they won this world cup w/ that,it wud mean they met shitty teams that cudnt score. Thank God Italy expozed them and got 4 GOALS, yes FOUR GOALS against ur Brazil's 2. FORZA ITALIA!!
One of the best WC games! But I'm sorry the plaudits given to this Brazilian team are well over the top. They had some class players & flair for sure but look at the teams they faced in the group stages; Scotland, New Zealand....do me a favour! This Brazilian team was hopeless in defence & Italy were the 1st team to expose it on the counter. If Brazil had met France then France would have come out on top too because in 82 their counter attack game was by far the best of all the teams
@michaeljac82 you think so? then look at those France met in that WC - Kuwait, Czechs, Austria and N. Ireland. Mediocrities! But France lost to both decent teams they met - England and Germany. They also lost to dull Poland, but there they had no motivation. I mean, both Brazil and France were fantastic to entertain the fans, but not reliable enough to succeed in the tournament. Germany was other way around. Only Italy was both powerful and wonderful. That's why they won.
@michaeljac82 New Zealand was a joke, but saying that Scotland was a weak team in 1982 is just pure ignorance. It was a far more difficult group stage than Italy faced.
@LouieGee I asked because a lot of people can't lose to Italy without complaining about bribed referees, linesmen, players, etc... Glad to know you're not one of them. Anyway, I'm not biased; that's just the way I see football. For instance, I think Brazil deserved to win the 1994 Final over Italy. I don't cheer for any particular team besides Italy, but some of your internationals play for my club team (Inter) and I usually hope they do well when they play for the Seleção.
As a life long Brazilian fan to the heart, i have to admit that Italy was locked in during this game. The chemistry was there and Paolo Rossi was UNSTOPPABLE!!!!!!!!
I don't understand why some people think Brazil should be granted the godly right to win every tournament because they play "fútbol bailado". It's not figure skating, there's no jury deciding who played better. Football is about attacking AND defending: when you score 2 goals but concede 4 (Antognoni's goal was onside) you deserve to lose, no matter what's your name or how good you are.
@R50605 Nail on the head. I was just thinking how sick I was of all these egotistical brazilians thinking that they played "pretty" so they deserved to win. The better team is determined by the score. End of story.
@hyperboreean So shitty defense "embodies the spirit of football"? They "deserved" to lose because they couldn't defend, and were lazy in their own half. And speak for yourself which team you rather watch, I rather watch a team that relies on tactics rather then fancy passes. Just because in your mind, brazil does all the things that you think "embodies the spirit of football" doesn't mean they deserve to win every game.
@hyperboreean I didn't say brazil has shitty defense in every game, they had extremely lazy and unorganized defense in this game, and that's why they lost, simple as that. I don't give a shit what kind of football you like to watch no way in hell I would have liked to see this brazilian team win this world cup with no idea how to defend.
@MCL8991 "I don't give a shit what kind of football you like to watch no way in hell I would have liked to see this brazilian team win this world cup with no idea how to defend."
Well, you trash-talking punk didn't (see it, that is). As for the kind of football I and most ppl who've ever kicked a ball like to watch ... it certainly is not the miserable italian anti-football.
@hyperboreean Catenaccio and unimaginative counter-attack: in the last 4 games Italy scored 10 (ten!) goals. 2 to Argentina, 3 to Brazil, 2 to Poland and 3 to Germany in the final. In your opinion they were obviously all scored with unimaginative counter-attacks I guess... In my opinion what Italy did in that world cup was epic. I remember those days like a dream (yes, I'm Italian, and old enough...) in which Italy went to glory after a very sloppy start. Unforgettable.
@maurem Too right, think about the classic WC games Italy have played in, here goes; Italy 4 Germany 3 (Mexico 70), Italy 3 Brazil 2 (82), Italy 2 Argentina 1 (82), Italy 3 Germ 1 (82), Italy 2 Spain 1 (94), Italy 2 Germany 0 (06).......all classic games and if you watch the highlights of any of those games you see some fantastic attacking football from Italy and great goals.
@maurem I watched this match at the time and Italy were a wonderful side, richly talented, with lots of skill and range - they needed to be to defeat a team like Brazil. Even though Brazil were a delight to watch I suppotered Italy in this match as the underdog but ultimately the game itself was what triumphed. Anyone who knows anything about football will appreciate how gifted this Italian team was.
@maurem haha get used to it...people like criticizing Italian football, easy target. They all just jump on the badwagon (usually they are not real fans, and know nothing about the game)...but you state the facts quite correctly. Italy came out in thta game and totally surprised the Brazilians who were expecting dull defense. Similar happened in 2006 in the semi vs. Germany. Italy won 2-0 by ATTACKING in extra time. Brazil by the way have been horrendous to watch since about '86. FORZA ITALIA
@hyperboreean Yawn sterotype Catenaccio talk. Watch the game in full, Italy attacked from the start & went for victory because put simply they had to. Yes Brazil were good; too good to sit back & defend against, but a draw wouldnt have been enough for Italy to go through. But for a wrongly disallowed 4th goal it would have been 4-2 to Italy. Italy had a great defence in that team but in Tardelli, Antongoni, Conti, a midfield (the best in Italian history) which was quick & very attacking minded.
@R50605 But u have to realize accidents happen, and sometimes u can't achieve something u clearly could because of something that is out of ur control. A F1 driver, for example, can suffer a mechanical failure and not win a race in which he was clearly the best.
I know I'm suspicious to say because I'm brazilian, but some "accidents" occured in this game. Cerezo making a big mistake and serginho losing a certain goal are "accidents". One tiny event can decide the whole thing...
@LouieGee Yes, accidents happen all the time. Serginho missed an open goal, so did Rossi; Cerezo made a mistake, so did the Italian defence, etc... That's football. Italy scored 3 goals, Brazil 2 and you can't complain about the refereeing; that's why I think we (I'm Italian) deserved to win.
Why do you all of a sudden write the word "accidents" between quotation marks? Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you trying to suggest that Italy bribed some of your players?
@R50605 LOL, not at all. I wrote it between quatation marks because it ain't exactly an accident, but a mistake. But a mistake that was, in a way, an accident. Anyways, I don't think we are going to change what we think since we are supporters, each one for his own nation. But I like italy because, among other things, their history in football. I supported you guys in the world cup finals of 2006. And I was supprting netherlands in 2010 because of their much richer history compared to spain.
@R50605 We don't say "futbol bailado" in Brasil (its spanish, and we talk portuguese) but I agree with you and no team represent it better than the best Brazilian sides. We won all our five world cups with balanced teams, with good defense, midfield and attack, like in 1970 or 1958 (In my opinion our best team)
@R50605 It has nothing to do with Brazil specifically, but any team that's brave enough to set up to attack with confidence and freedom of expression, pushing a high line and playing one-touch football with regular dribbling and skills deserves a hell of a lot of credit.Everyone wants to win.Setting up that way makes it much harder to be tight at the back, but it's the best football to watch.I hate teams that set up for a cagey 1-0, they're boring and they drive fans away
@R50605 But teams that go out to attack, that look for good possession and classy goals are always great teams to watch, they attract fans and inspire players. The win these days has financial implications, but some players have pride in their football and would rather lose well than win poorly with a cheap goal that steals it.Point I'm making is dont give them victory by right, but give them credit for the bravery and style of their play
Italy knows how to play football but unfortunately due to their culture or whatever their style sucks and in 80's it was dirty game all the time on their and Spain's part. Brazil are GODS in football for most time.. nobody is close to them.. nobody .. even in any particular moment in time.. some countries have had good teams time to time but never close to Brazil's levels. Sadly, the winner determined by a final score and score sometimes affected by personal mistakes.. nothing to do with level
Paolo Rossi;s Career has to be one of the greatest stories in football.
Was Suspended in a max fixing Scandal banned for two years, his career was finished! His suspension ended on April 1982 and was Controversially drafted into the Italy team in june! didnt score in any of the poor group games which they scraped through. Then bagged this hatrick against the greatest team ever! (IMO) scored 2 against Poland and one in the final and Took the golden boot!!became a national Hero.
Zico's move on the first goal is a beautiful reminder of the great quality of the game those days. Falcao, Junior, Zico, Socrates, Cerezo, who all played at some point in Italy, made this game ever more of an epic. A disallowed goal for Italy gave added more drama and emphasis to the late clutching stop by Zoff on the last shot on goal of the game....Pure joy to have lived that moment live. It doesn't matter which color is your flag when you witness a game like this.
i was 7. cried like a baby. Italy seemed like the Satan and brasil was the Angel. took me years to understand that justice is just a name of someone (Justice timberlake....)
since then i followd Tele Santana and managed to see his truly Dream team- Sau Paulo- R.I.P champ
This is the really football. I miss this tipe of players. Messi and Cristiano sux. Forza Bruno conti, rossi, socrates, zico, falcao, zoff, gentile, baresi, etc.
Goal by Falcao still breathtaking. The way he shapes to play the ball to Isidoro, who makes the decoy run, taking three Italian defenders out of the game,
before that cracking left footed drive past Zoff. Awesome. Simply awesome.
@11arsenalfc1 yes but rossi did just as good he smelled that cereso was going to make a mistake and once he got the ball he smashed it in goal..... great stuff
I remember that game as if it were yesterday, and although I wanted Brazil to win, Italy did deserve it. Great players back then, all of them, very few of today's players could lace the boots of those who took part in that match. It took Brazil twelve more years to win the world cup again, and they haven't been the same since.
Italy actually were robbed of their forth goal (see minute 4:18 and pause at moment ball is played to Antognoni). At moment ball is played, the second to last defender is at right in front of goal box (corner of box), while Antognoni is slightly further behind goal box line. Back then even was offside, but this was not even even. No matter. The better team won, and I celebrated that and the final. Unfortunately I was almost 12 at the time, and had to wait until 2006 to taste victory again.
In Italy we called what you are saying "river Piave syndrome" as along such river in WWI, as last line of defence, we desperately resisted to a massive austro hungarian army attack ..and from there we counterattacked to win then.
So, you are right: we give our best only in troubles and when all seems lost.
@Mrstrangevoice LMAO have you never watched this match in full? Iraly were rolling about the floor all the time, the difference being the crowd was booing whenever they did it. Unfortunately the Italians are the masters of spreading cancers around football, cheating, diving, defensive football and ultras!
@chavmanx ...and you, what you have done for the football ? Do something good for the world ... shut up please ! I watched this match and Italy gave a football lesson to arrogant brasilians ... we won because we were a better football team, with a waterproof defense and forward able to score goals.
4 world cup ... not so bad for "defensive football"...
@pkbosslac Yes, very good, i thought beforehand it was between France, Holland and Brazil, but the final was a let down. Holland 74 was the most disappointing loss for me, they were magnificent in the tournament
Great match, that was a superb Brazilian team, one of the most exciting, but they were ruthlessly made to pay for their mistakes/weaknesses by Rossi. I'd rate that Brazilian team 3rd best not to win the world cup, after Holland 74 and Hungary 54. Or have i missed some?
On my statement on bad refereeing, for those who didn't experience that World Cup 'live'. Italy had good players like Conti (my favorite), Tardelli & Antonioni. But Italy did things that are no longer allowed. They had a ruthless butcher/ defender Gentile, nearly kicked Maradonna out of the WC in the previous game: attacks from behind, no intention of playing the ball; even when there was no ball around. Wasting minutes of time, just letting the ball lay there, feigning injuries. Referee did O.
@manforwoman2 Many teams do play like Brazil. They just can't make passes like this team and the defenses are porous. That's a recipe for playing 3 games at the world cup and going home. See Columbia in 1994. If you have skill, you may win some games like France in 1986, Netherlands in 1994, or Brazil in 1998. Football is played at all parts of the pitch, with and ESPECIALLY without the ball. Defense wins championships in ALL team sports and football is no different.
i enjoyed watching this world cup 1982 best ever and i so loved the brazilians they were magic to watch italy were not bad either they all played football in those days and played from the heart not like the prema donnas today sadly
Wish I could get a time machine and get a ticket to this match and keep silent on who won this game or predict boldy that Italy and Rossi will have a great game.
A combination of things went wrong for Brazil that day. I don't think it was tactic, naivety or bad defending; Brazil had won all previous games convincingly. 1) Brazil didn't look as sharp as before, maybe because only a draw was needed. 2) Bad refereeing. Italy was defending by any means; hard fouls and time-wasting without measures from the referee. Rules were changes after this World Cup. 3) Personal mistake in the back while the team was switching to offense. 4) Rossi. A complete upset
@LeonellGT Again with this fable of bad refereeing in favour of Italy which apparently was not granted the GODLY RIGHT to defeat Brazil. Do you know that at the 86th minute Italy scored a 4th valid goal which was void because of a NON-EXISTING OFFSIDE?
Italy did dominate the match, especially because of the braveness of coach Bearzot who did insist on Paolo Rossi who did not score once before then. RIP Enzo, Italy's best coach ever and, before all, a GREAT MAN
In 2002 they had the most amazing defence: Buffon, Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta and if it hadn't been for the most disgraceful refereeing ever (the same that subsequently eliminated both Spain and Portugal), Italy would have easily made it to the final in Japan that year. They also had Vieri, Totti, Del Piero (all in their prime of maturity), Pirlo, Inzaghi, Gattuso, Panucci etc. That team was full of champions... So please folks, a little more respect for Italy.. They are masters!!!
The funny thing is that if Italy had won the penalty shoot-out in 1994 (against Brazil) THEY would now be the greatest side ever with 5 World Cups and Brazil 4..
Italy have played 6 World Cup finals. They have qualified for the final every 12 years since 1970. They should have been finalists in 1990 (that was probably the greatest italian side never to win the world cup (Baggio, Vialli, Maldini, Baresi, Bergomi, Zenga, Ancelotti, Donadoni, Giannini, Schillaci, Ferrara etc) and also in 2002..
@SuperArchitect101 - It is my opinion, right? And you try to judge me, what's your problem? Unhappy childhood or something? (your nick shows that you have some complex :-D ). French football is also boring for me. Look at the players transferred from Spanish or English to Italian League - they all lost their shape. Most famous from Italian football is ALMIGHTY CORRPUPTION :-)
@68matti The English players that come to play in Serie A don't do well because the teams actually know how to defend as a team. In Italian football, one guy does not win the game like in England. The tactics and strategies are much more sophisticated and the domestic players are simply better technically than the domestically trained players in England. Every smart person knows that. Players only choose the Premiere League because their teams have been throwing the money around lately.
Brésil / Italie fut un grand match avec des retournements de situation comme l'a été France / Allemagne. Perso, ces deux matchs ont fait de la Coupe du Monde 1982 , un grand Mundial !!!
camilintgomery - YOU ARE TOTALLY RiGHT!!! Italian football is so defensive and boring. And the worst world cup was in 2006 when The Spaghettis won :-/
@camilintgomery Disgrace? you will have a magic team if you have 6 magicians to attack. but you still need the defence. 82 Brasil was one of the greatest teams, but calling italy a disgrace to football is a bit harsh. they don't just give away 4 world cups
I'm still in awe and watch in wonder at Socrates' subliminal goal against Italy,a two man move between Zico and Socrates sliced the tight Italian defence apart with ease, total football at it's most immaculate.Brazil 1982=Unforgettable,Legends forever.

The 1982 world cup was the best and Brazil were fantastic but Paolo Rossi was inspired and Italy's name just seemed to be on the trophy.
Absolutely loved that tournament. There's not been a world cup since that compares, in my opinion.

This was last of the great Brazilian teams in the vintage sense.

Such a classic game in every sense. Even morally. In recent times I would have say that the 2005 Champions League final which was played beautifully and with out one player getting a card of any sort & the today's Barcelona team should be compared to this beauty.
jghatora1 4 months ago
A great game and Italy deserved to win, positive attacking football, no play acting, cheating, abusing officials like todays game, the 1982 world cup was one of the best (and I'm English).

@connoisseurnic Did you ever read that book by Gianluca Vialli about English and Italian soccer? A great read if you are a fan of English and Italian style of playing. As well, I am Italian and the way the English play is amazing in its own rite!
GianniStunato 4 months ago

If Brazil had met France then France would have come out on top too because in 82 their counter attack game was by far the best of all the teams
michaeljac82 6 months ago 2
@michaeljac82 you think so? then look at those France met in that WC - Kuwait, Czechs, Austria and N. Ireland. Mediocrities! But France lost to both decent teams they met - England and Germany. They also lost to dull Poland, but there they had no motivation. I mean, both Brazil and France were fantastic to entertain the fans, but not reliable enough to succeed in the tournament. Germany was other way around. Only Italy was both powerful and wonderful. That's why they won.
BlackCrowNavajo 4 months ago

R50605 7 months ago 21
@R50605 Nail on the head. I was just thinking how sick I was of all these egotistical brazilians thinking that they played "pretty" so they deserved to win. The better team is determined by the score. End of story.
MCL8991 6 months ago
@MCL8991 Not always the best is determined by the score, that's a complete ignorance, sorry to say.
LouieGee 6 months ago
@MCL8991 Football is a SPORT. Things like skill, effort, sportsmanship and showmanship are the reason we like to watch.
Teams that are the antithesis of that only detract from the idea of sport.
Of the two, Brazil was the team that embodies the spirit of football. And thus "deserved" to win because we would have liked to watch more of them.
hyperboreean 6 months ago
@hyperboreean So shitty defense "embodies the spirit of football"? They "deserved" to lose because they couldn't defend, and were lazy in their own half. And speak for yourself which team you rather watch, I rather watch a team that relies on tactics rather then fancy passes. Just because in your mind, brazil does all the things that you think "embodies the spirit of football" doesn't mean they deserve to win every game.
MCL8991 6 months ago
@MCL8991 If "shitty defense" is what characterized Brazilian play to you, than you understand nothing of football.
Pls try and keep the straw men out. I never said they deserved to win "every game".
BTW,
I repeat: it's a sport and a spectator sport at that. Who wants to see catenaccio defense and unimaginative counter-attack tactics for 90 min?
hyperboreean 6 months ago

WTF do you know about it anyway?
hyperboreean 6 months ago
@hyperboreean Catenaccio and unimaginative counter-attack: in the last 4 games Italy scored 10 (ten!) goals. 2 to Argentina, 3 to Brazil, 2 to Poland and 3 to Germany in the final. In your opinion they were obviously all scored with unimaginative counter-attacks I guess... In my opinion what Italy did in that world cup was epic. I remember those days like a dream (yes, I'm Italian, and old enough...) in which Italy went to glory after a very sloppy start. Unforgettable.
maurem 6 months ago 10
@maurem Too right, think about the classic WC games Italy have played in, here goes; Italy 4 Germany 3 (Mexico 70), Italy 3 Brazil 2 (82), Italy 2 Argentina 1 (82), Italy 3 Germ 1 (82), Italy 2 Spain 1 (94), Italy 2 Germany 0 (06).......all classic games and if you watch the highlights of any of those games you see some fantastic attacking football from Italy and great goals.
michaeljac82 6 months ago
@maurem I watched this match at the time and Italy were a wonderful side, richly talented, with lots of skill and range - they needed to be to defeat a team like Brazil. Even though Brazil were a delight to watch I suppotered Italy in this match as the underdog but ultimately the game itself was what triumphed. Anyone who knows anything about football will appreciate how gifted this Italian team was.
FirmlyHanded 2 months ago
@maurem haha get used to it...people like criticizing Italian football, easy target. They all just jump on the badwagon (usually they are not real fans, and know nothing about the game)...but you state the facts quite correctly. Italy came out in thta game and totally surprised the Brazilians who were expecting dull defense. Similar happened in 2006 in the semi vs. Germany. Italy won 2-0 by ATTACKING in extra time. Brazil by the way have been horrendous to watch since about '86. FORZA ITALIA
dessert57 2 months ago
@hyperboreean Yawn sterotype Catenaccio talk. Watch the game in full, Italy attacked from the start & went for victory because put simply they had to. Yes Brazil were good; too good to sit back & defend against, but a draw wouldnt have been enough for Italy to go through. But for a wrongly disallowed 4th goal it would have been 4-2 to Italy. Italy had a great defence in that team but in Tardelli, Antongoni, Conti, a midfield (the best in Italian history) which was quick & very attacking minded.
michaeljac82 6 months ago
@R50605 But u have to realize accidents happen, and sometimes u can't achieve something u clearly could because of something that is out of ur control. A F1 driver, for example, can suffer a mechanical failure and not win a race in which he was clearly the best.
I know I'm suspicious to say because I'm brazilian, but some "accidents" occured in this game. Cerezo making a big mistake and serginho losing a certain goal are "accidents". One tiny event can decide the whole thing...
LouieGee 6 months ago
@LouieGee Yes, accidents happen all the time. Serginho missed an open goal, so did Rossi; Cerezo made a mistake, so did the Italian defence, etc... That's football. Italy scored 3 goals, Brazil 2 and you can't complain about the refereeing; that's why I think we (I'm Italian) deserved to win.
Why do you all of a sudden write the word "accidents" between quotation marks? Correct me if I'm wrong, but are you trying to suggest that Italy bribed some of your players?
R50605 6 months ago
@R50605 LOL, not at all. I wrote it between quatation marks because it ain't exactly an accident, but a mistake. But a mistake that was, in a way, an accident. Anyways, I don't think we are going to change what we think since we are supporters, each one for his own nation. But I like italy because, among other things, their history in football. I supported you guys in the world cup finals of 2006. And I was supprting netherlands in 2010 because of their much richer history compared to spain.
LouieGee 6 months ago
@R50605 We don't say "futbol bailado" in Brasil (its spanish, and we talk portuguese) but I agree with you and no team represent it better than the best Brazilian sides. We won all our five world cups with balanced teams, with good defense, midfield and attack, like in 1970 or 1958 (In my opinion our best team)
invino334 3 months ago
@R50605 It has nothing to do with Brazil specifically, but any team that's brave enough to set up to attack with confidence and freedom of expression, pushing a high line and playing one-touch football with regular dribbling and skills deserves a hell of a lot of credit.Everyone wants to win.Setting up that way makes it much harder to be tight at the back, but it's the best football to watch.I hate teams that set up for a cagey 1-0, they're boring and they drive fans away
IntangibleIllusion79 2 months ago

I remember that game as if it were yesterday, and although I wanted Brazil to win, Italy did deserve it. Great players back then, all of them, very few of today's players could lace the boots of those who took part in that match. It took Brazil twelve more years to win the world cup again, and they haven't been the same since.
11arsenalfc1 8 months ago
Surely, the most exciting game I've ever watched.
bersa888 8 months ago

Great match, that was a superb Brazilian team, one of the most exciting, but they were ruthlessly made to pay for their mistakes/weaknesses by Rossi. I'd rate that Brazilian team 3rd best not to win the world cup, after Holland 74 and Hungary 54. Or have i missed some?
mizofan 9 months ago
On my statement on bad refereeing, for those who didn't experience that World Cup 'live'. Italy had good players like Conti (my favorite), Tardelli & Antonioni. But Italy did things that are no longer allowed. They had a ruthless butcher/ defender Gentile, nearly kicked Maradonna out of the WC in the previous game: attacks from behind, no intention of playing the ball; even when there was no ball around. Wasting minutes of time, just letting the ball lay there, feigning injuries. Referee did O.

manforwoman2 10 months ago
@manforwoman2 Many teams do play like Brazil. They just can't make passes like this team and the defenses are porous. That's a recipe for playing 3 games at the world cup and going home. See Columbia in 1994. If you have skill, you may win some games like France in 1986, Netherlands in 1994, or Brazil in 1998. Football is played at all parts of the pitch, with and ESPECIALLY without the ball. Defense wins championships in ALL team sports and football is no different.

Wish I could get a time machine and get a ticket to this match and keep silent on who won this game or predict boldy that Italy and Rossi will have a great game.
SFFOOL76 10 months ago
A combination of things went wrong for Brazil that day. I don't think it was tactic, naivety or bad defending; Brazil had won all previous games convincingly. 1) Brazil didn't look as sharp as before, maybe because only a draw was needed. 2) Bad refereeing. Italy was defending by any means; hard fouls and time-wasting without measures from the referee. Rules were changes after this World Cup. 3) Personal mistake in the back while the team was switching to offense. 4) Rossi. A complete upset
LeonellGT 10 months ago
@LeonellGT Again with this fable of bad refereeing in favour of Italy which apparently was not granted the GODLY RIGHT to defeat Brazil. Do you know that at the 86th minute Italy scored a 4th valid goal which was void because of a NON-EXISTING OFFSIDE?
Italy did dominate the match, especially because of the braveness of coach Bearzot who did insist on Paolo Rossi who did not score once before then. RIP Enzo, Italy's best coach ever and, before all, a GREAT MAN
sfrenato 9 months ago 2
In 2002 they had the most amazing defence: Buffon, Maldini, Cannavaro, Nesta, Zambrotta and if it hadn't been for the most disgraceful refereeing ever (the same that subsequently eliminated both Spain and Portugal), Italy would have easily made it to the final in Japan that year. They also had Vieri, Totti, Del Piero (all in their prime of maturity), Pirlo, Inzaghi, Gattuso, Panucci etc. That team was full of champions... So please folks, a little more respect for Italy.. They are masters!!!
FunnyTVChips 10 months ago 2
The funny thing is that if Italy had won the penalty shoot-out in 1994 (against Brazil) THEY would now be the greatest side ever with 5 World Cups and Brazil 4..
Italy have played 6 World Cup finals. They have qualified for the final every 12 years since 1970. They should have been finalists in 1990 (that was probably the greatest italian side never to win the world cup (Baggio, Vialli, Maldini, Baresi, Bergomi, Zenga, Ancelotti, Donadoni, Giannini, Schillaci, Ferrara etc) and also in 2002..

@68matti All football world is almighty corruption. Not just Italy.
mjecpa 10 months ago
@68matti The English players that come to play in Serie A don't do well because the teams actually know how to defend as a team. In Italian football, one guy does not win the game like in England. The tactics and strategies are much more sophisticated and the domestic players are simply better technically than the domestically trained players in England. Every smart person knows that. Players only choose the Premiere League because their teams have been throwing the money around lately.

Italy is a disgrace for the good football. In Spain and now. Poor and boring style. No justice for football masters, 82's Brazil
