  • one of my favorite pieces ever... but, hey, I'm a tuba player :)

  • I'm playing it in the orchestra at Cerritos College.

  • Played this in 8th grade.. Enjoyed every bit of this piece :)

    Very well composed!

  • Euphonium for the win~~! :D

  • This is a bad high school honors band. Yeeeeech!

  • @anniers7 They're outta sync and everything! I blame the teacher though.

  • I play the clarinet in this song currently and Omg I love this piece but the 16th note runs frustrate me.

  • @TheMjobsessed

really? i think the 16th note runs in this song are kind of easy..except the screechy high F, and sometimes a E just below it. I have the Solo clarinet part, so, to me its easy. What part do you have?

  • 2:24 So beautifully melancholy, followed by 2:40 -full of anger.

  • I <3 this piece played it and dominated it :)

  • I'm studying the first suite in my conducting class =)

  • i am the solo clarinet player for this piece. I CANT WAIT!! ITS SUCH A FUN PIECE. especially the extremely high E's and F's in the 16th note runs.

  • This has to be a high school band.

  • @nugmit What are you talking about?I'm playing this in 8th grade symphonic band!!!

  • @CirfewN I know me too xD were playing it for our 7th and 8th grade wind ensemble

  • 1:36

    must...remember...need...to...play...this...PERFECTLY...in December. ....

I don't want to think about it.

  • @PotterLover52695 hey, same here! hahah!

  • @gku14 :)

  • @PotterLover52695 i got so many trumpet solos

  • @gku14 haha I'm a french horn but I'm only playing with three clarinets so I canNOT hear them. It drives me nuts.

  • DON'T CLAP IN BETWEEN MOVEMENTS!

  • Gottlieb muffat, tocata undécima

  • Last year, we (my high school symphonic band) played this at a competition and did very well with it. That was my band director's last year. Glad he got to retire after this piece. i love it.

  • @LivingInDreamland7 lol kingwooodddd

  • This song is good thumbs up if u agree... AND I LOVE THE PART WHEN TROMBONES PLAYED THE QUARTER NOTES WITH THE CLARINETS....

  • Favorite ever, but this recording sucks.

  • @NickRobo1994 look at the one by Psychedelicity, he put a recording up of UNT doing this piece. or look at related videos, the light blue one

  • TUBA

  • I had the Eb clarinet solo in this suite :) . Still have my Eb clarinet. I miss playing music.

  • Bass trombone ftw lol. Excellent piece

  • OBOE SOLO, Am I the only one who noticed it at 2:08 ?? It's pretty awesome

  • @TheSt4rMaN I love the solo sooo much <3 <3 <3

  • go tuba!

  • If you notice, everything starts on beat 3 of each measure. Hehe, an old composing trick.

  • the tuba doubles the bass sax on this piece, thumbs up if you know what im talking about.

  • @JFroTheMusician that's pretty common knowledge bud. Now tell me is this based on the Eb major or minor scale?

  • @THEmelloMAN1229 If I remember correctly, Eb minor.

  • sorry but if your listening to this piece for the first time... this band doesn't do it justice.

  • This remains, to this day, my uttermost favourite piece I've played in a group.

  • this band is pretty terrible

  • yeahh clarinet solo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The runs are scales... The Eb scale I believe. Not difficult.

  • @Kever135 lol hence the title first suit in Eb :D

  • @Kever135 Yeah, it's the Eb scale with random C#s and F#s in the Alto Sax section. The hardest part of that section is getting it in time.

  • @Kever135

on the Solo Clarinet in Bb part it's just a Bb scale..that starts with the C just below the staff, and goes to the F thats 3 lines above the staff..which is insanely high for anyone in the clarinet section at my school, except me.

  • go bari sax

  • @silentj005 bari sax? dude thats all tuba. Believe me, i played it in an orchestra that had a bari sax.

  • @DefyingGravity671 I didn't know ORCHESTRAS had bari saxes LOL hehe JK

  • @CharlieBladeRemus well it was a wind orchestra. so it had sax'es

  • *has oboe love*

  • This is not a good recodring. The ensemble is not together, the 16th notes are not rhythmically accurate, and the intonation is suspect at the lower dynamic levels.

  • @Idrum2x finally, someone that knows what a good recording is supposed to sound like, musically.

  • SAXOPHONES (ALTO) IS THE BEST

  • everyone has played this in middle school.. I'm in high school.. and I have to learn this within 1 month for festival.. this song is difficult. lol

    clarinet ftw.

  • I really don't like this recording

  • i love this, but the clarinet 16th note run is so INSANE.

  • the runs are insane, I would know, since I;ve played them on flute oboe and clarinet xDDD but easy now <3

  • @FunkkyPanda riiiight! we just got the music today and my jaw dropped. i was like, your kidding me right?

  • HORN SOLO FUCK YEAH

  • tromebones are amazing

  • I'm wondering why this is being performed absurdly fast.

  • @rangerns Maybe your director took it slow. It varies to the conductors tastes

  • I played the first clarinet part for this in 7th grade and all I remember is loving the piece but hating the insane runs haha :] so worth the hard work to get them down.

  • Flute runs Hard but amazing majory fun to play

  • We played this when I was a freshman in high school in the county honors band and I STILL remember my part. Scary!

  • how can someone dislike such piece.

  • Sounds o.k., but couldn't you have come-up with some visuals ?

We already knew what the piece was when we clicked on Play.

  • @ybravura its a song...not a slideshow o.o.....

  • @AmphibianStudios "I have always had a horror of listening to music with my eyes shut, with nothing for them to do. The sight of the gestures and movements of the various parts of the body producing the music is fundamentally necessary if it is to be grasped in all its fullness." (Igor Stravinsky)

  • @ybravura well mate, you aren't stravinsky either. just be grateful the song itself is there.

  • @ybravura I didn't.

  • playin this in band!

  • Just played this at the TPSMEA All-State band concert last night, and I think we played this a little better, judging at least by the first minute or so...and faster.

  • wow. I'm getting chills this is so beautiful.

though, I rarely say it when up against a recording but,

I like our band's version of it more.

The crescendo at the end is a lot more dramatic the way we play it.

    great song though.

  • GO CLARINETS(im a clarinet player)

  • @hellokittykilla Clarinets ROCK! HIGH FIVE

  • Awesome this bring back so many memories i played this in my freshmen year of high school.

  • 0:53 hahaha, one of the Clarinets cracked.

(How do you make it so that when you click on the time marking in a comment, it automatically goes to it in the video?)

  • @Zeyeco nvm. >.<

  • @Zeyeco you did.

  • 1st clarinet on this one, love the clarinet solo in movement 2. <3

  • @BlondieSingsTheBlues same here! fun to play, but challenging!

  • other than some intonation issue, it was ok..

  • i just played this at a concert like 20 minutes ago, and the other first cornet forgot to come so i had to play first cornet alone on a solo i hadn't played ever before, the other solo i had played though. i think playing first cornet is super fun.

  • the way the last chord of this piece rang in an empty concert hall during a rehearsal in 1997 is still one of the best moments of my life.

  • Comment removed

  • I'm playing this in class and I'm totally killing my co-oboe player on it XD she hates this movement, because its boring, but its because I have the solo XD

  • i played this in Valon odotus Consert in Finland/Kuhmo

    Trumpet 2

  • @oilerman9 i doubt you're that good if you're only in middle school. you ever hear a high school band? well you should. i used to think i was so great, but i wasnt. now, NOW we sound great.

  • @NinjaKatie95 Just letting you know, when we preform , people do think we are high school band. Why? Because we sound that good. Not to mention we play pieces inended for high school bands, and our teacher will accept nothing but prefection.

  • played the flute solo! :D

  • i luv playin the run.

  • we had this song for rememberance day....such a great piece!

  • @brendy1995 st. george's?

  • @WhiteMonk96 Gr 10

  • @brendy1995 nice it sounded awesome

  • @WhiteMonk96 indeed

  • 3:49......best part

  • im lookin at my alto sax part right now and follwing along and listeneing. :)

  • we played the whole suite my freshman year, and i love having the first horn part! (btw, we played this at state and got a Superior!)

  • @TheWindowsComputer This was the first band piece that I played my freshman year that had a real solo as well. How many people did you have in your section when you preformed the piece?

  • @sfrenchhorn07 i was the only horn!

  • @TheWindowsComputer Oh that sucks! This piece definatly sounds best when you have all 4 parts covered. Even though my section was 5 people I was the only one that practiced so it felt like I was the only horn in my section as well.

  • la mejor de las suites para banda militar de gustav holst..

  • One person simply refused to feel the music

  • Clapping after movements ಠ_ಠ

  • I get to play the awesome horn solo's in this piece in my band :3

  • Oh and tell the low brass in the beginning not to all breathe at the same time. I can hear those gaps. D:<

  • @iSNEEZES I can hear them, too. But I know for a fact that some directors will purposely have breath marks for everybody to breathe. I know we did a lot of that at All District Band last year in all of our songs, including O Magnum Mysterium. It annoyed me, since most of the time I still had plenty of air left, but whatever.

I don't know if that's what happened here....eh.

It still sounds fine to me, though.

  • I love the part that starts at 0:49

  • i play the trumpet and my band teacher suggested that we play this. if our band would practice more then we could probably be awesome

  • who played this???

  • My school band was too stupid to play this

  • playing this in band at the moment

  • played tuba for this one, did the bit at the beginning in unison with a euphonium, it sounded epic and it was really good fun

  • played bass trombone with my concert band this year on this piece, sooo fun!

  • @assasinman87 totally agree love playing this on bass trombone

  • The trombone part for this is actually pretty boring until the end when we play those high G's and stuff!!!

  • The way the piece is written is just outstanding. My favorite plus to this piece is how it changes the melody from one insturment to another so smoothly that you can hardly notice it. 5 stars. Love ya holst.!

  • My 7th and 8th grade concert band is playing this for our spring concert. I've almost got the 16th note patterns (1:22-1:37) down [:

  • saxs all the way!!!!

  • @theirishdancer548

saxes have a great part with the sixtheenth notes

  • @theirishdancer548 YAY!!!!!!

  • Freakin SWEET!!! Euphoniums rule the bands!

  • My middle school Honor Winds is playing this for our spring concert ..... euphoniums rule all other instruments

  • @ipwneduintheface hell yea!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @ipwneduintheface HELLL YEAH

  • @ipwneduintheface u mean other than percussion of course

  • @ipwneduintheface fuck yea they do

  • @ipwneduintheface

    pffff, tuba pwns.

  • i love this peice i have the euphonium solo in all movements and i love the range it has from super low to quite high i love it!

  • Very beautiful piece...too bad my band

can not play this piece =(

  • I love this whole piece, My school is playing all three movements and I have solo B flat first clarinet and I love it (:

  • This is beautiful. Whenever i play it i sound good but no where as good as this. This guy was AMAZING.

    =)

  • go horn solo

  • @bbsweetie01 the horn solo rocks!!

  • I can't hear the bass drum hemiola (or however it's spelled) that's supposed to start at 2:40. Can anyone else hear it?

  • @mpjmt I think you spelled it right, and no, I can't hear it either, at least not right away. It could be that the recording device didn't pick it up well, or that it just wasn't loud enough.

  • @mpjmt hahah i was just thinking that!

  • Acually, if you play only one movment it's a grade 3, if you play two movments it's a grade 4, and when you play all three it's a grade 5.

  • really? and who are you sir?

  • also the bestttttt ending in the worldddddddddd!!!!!!!

  • we are playing all three! (: i loveee all of these movements!

  • @lucyfan02 me too!!! What instrument do you play?

  • the version we played in band was just the first and third movements, aranged of course into a two page band piece for i thi9nk it was a level 2 or 2.5 band... not sure

  • @TheDecoraHippie1992 If you play two movements it is a grade 3 i believe, but if you plat all three its a grade 5.

  • well it was an arangement

  • we played this in my school's wind ensemble last year (euphonium), and this and the 3rd movement have to be some of the greatest pieces of music ive ever heard!

  • i love how i get to play this in concert band its so beautiful and sounds so unbelievable light and flawless

  • Beautiful piece. I am a guitarist aspiring to be a music educator. I am recently getting into the world of concert music

  • did you know this was written for a 19 piece band?

  • @JKSCHERMAN no

  • @JKSCHERMAN That might be lowballing it i think 30 pieces includeing percussion is a better estimate. Definatly one on a part in the Brass and doubled Woodwinds except double reeds.

  • @JKSCHERMAN 18.

  • We went to state way back in 1992 on this. Always told the director I needed to be show cased as a tuba player. I dug the shared solo with the baritone at the beginning. Cool tune!

  • I love it

  • OOOOMMMMGGGGG!!! I LOVVEEEEEEEE THIIISSSSSS SONNGGGGGGGG!!!!!! we're playing it in concert band and its SO f-ing pretty and dark, i love it.
