  • Is it hard to see/find a geisha/maiko/geiko in Kyoto? More than anything I would LOVE to see one when I go to Japan in April!! Though I've heard they can be difficult to find? Where should I go to see them?

  • Tokyo has one of the lowest crime rate in the world ,can you believe it?

  • i wish i could live in some place like that, seems much better than england

  • what are the packages they are all carrying ?

  • beautiful !

  • such a great video;) thx for uploading:D

  • if they use paper umbrella's sometimes, wouldn't they have to wax or oil the paper?

  • I wish we could have seen their obi, they're usually really pretty. :)

  • 5:00 she's pretty

  • They amaze me 

  • Amazingly elegant x

  • I really enjoyed!!! :):) Very very interesting to watch. And I LOVED KYOTO!!!

  • wow! Thanks for sharing

  • deadly silence!

  • :59 i thought they had to sit to shut doors

  • @pbul7306 Only inside. They'd get terribly dirty if they knelt to open the outside doors.

  • Why was one wearing black? I thought they were supposed to wear bright colors.

  • @chickenfudgestick Because she's a Geiko. Geiko wear darker colors than Maiko, it means that Geiko are more mature than Maiko. If you take a look, you can see Maiko's kimonos under their rain jackets, and they are brighter :)

  • I wonder if they get thir socks wet.

  • Kyoto and the Maiko / Geiko were far south of the tsunami damage.

  • They are so gorgeously elegant, even in the rain :) just exquisite. How did Kyoto fare in the ongoing tragedy? :(

  • i'm in love with the view T_T

  • Nice quality video. Lovely scenes. The Maiko look lovely and the styles fantastic. I wish I could be there now. I was in Kyoto once and it rained for the 3 days I was there! But Iwas in the historic part so I saw no Geisha or Maiko. What are the other Geisha districts out there? I usually go to Tokyo! Thanks for this once again

  • it seeems all geisha's are like sisters ...i love how they great each other respectfully

  • I have now seen this vid a few times, it never fails to make me feel good. It's lovely to see the Geisha greet other Geisha and their neighbors.

Watching this I have felt I would like to meet one of these women just to be able to talk to one of them.

  • pause at 3:34 and it makes for a nice photo

  • Haha the maiko's raincoats are soooo cute! They look like little turtles

  • Such Lovliness

  • Thank you for posting the video!!! ^.^

I loved seeing all the different kimono designs. I wish I could see Hokan and your normal female Geisha in real life.

  • What's the difference between Geisha, Geiko and Maiko?

  • @hellsing3x6

Geisha in Japan are called Geiko. As the little sisters or apprentice is called Maiko. I hope that helps! ^.^

  • @hellsing3x6

In my understanding Geiko and Maiko are terms that come under Geisha. You become a Maiko first then a Geiko.

I've done papers on them before and i'm just in love with everything that they are about.

They each mean somthing. I can't remember exactly.

  • @AmaBadu Maiko-dancing child and geiko/geisha-artistic person.Maiko is the final stage in the geiko training,You are maiko for abt 5-6 years.when you start your training int he okiya, your shikomi, or servant girl, you do chores and help your older sisters(maiko/geiko) the stage last for 6 months too 1 year.then you are minarai (menas watching) this stage last between 1-2 months.at this stage you watch you elder sisters as when they are dressed and are with them to parties. then maiko then geiko

  • the place looks so elegant and luxurious! With the lamps on and all.... and sooo clean!! Omg, ever so clean!!

  • They're so graceful, but some of their shoes are pretty clumpy.

And.. do some of them use hair pieces?

And... why don't we girlies ever get this sort of luxury entertainment?

  • are the geiko and maiko wearing rain jackets to cover up their kimono

  • @PINKluvr01 Yes, that's right.

  • @PINKluvr01

    Yes, that's right.

  • @PINKluvr01 yes like raincoats to keep their kimonos dry the jackets will be waterproof

  • Well, of course they scurry! They'd fall out of their shoes if they did!

  • The last geisha seems soooo tired and depressed

  • I absolutely adore the umbrellas, but can't find that style. Anyone have a suggestion?

  • one of them gave u a weird look as if uve been creeping them out lol

  • Ah, Miyagawa-cho, it's quite interesting to see them walking everywhere!

  • now im in kyoto, they told us about gyon if we want to see the real original giehsas .... thanks for the video, it looks like you'v been stalking them :P

  • What a beautiful video. I've been to Kyoto and they really do just walk around the gion district. Excellent footage!

  • thise looks such a beautiful place so peacful life at a gentle pace and the Geishas are so beautiful i can say hello in Japanese so id say that and bow to them even though im a blonde scots girl im dying to goto Japan a beautiful country

  • What a beautiful piece of film, thanks for uploading, now I want to red my geisha books again. This has just really chilled me out for bed.....lovely, beautiful, I'll be dreaming of Gion. :)

  • GEISHA SLUMBERPARTY! Haha, joking.

I think Geishas are amazing. I got a book on them and I love to look at the pictures. I have to read it again. <3

  • they are such amazing people

  • @tayycutekitty they really and truly are if i lived in japan i would totally dedicate my life to that!!!!!

  • i think that geiko means "woman of arts", while geisha means: artist.thats the only difference.

  • Taken literally, "geisha" means "person of the arts", while "geiko" means "child of the arts".

  • if geisha means ARTIST what Meiko stands for?

  • maiko; translates to "danicing child"

  • Geisha does mean 'crafts-person' which translates to artist. Maiko means 'dancing child.' But in Kyoto, geisha are often called 'geiko' which means 'craft child.'

  • The second character is different indeed, but the main difference is usage. Geisha is standard japanese, geiko is used in Kyoto (and other places). Some other places yet use "geigi".

  • those arent geiko or geisha most of those are maiko and its july you can tell by the hairstyles the maiko in the blue kimono raincoat has the katsuyama hairstyle my personal fav. alot of the maiko in this vid are prob 15-17 cuz most sport the wareshinobu hairstyle, i wonder if the geiko in the black raincoat near the end, if she was kogiku, kinda resembled her. anyways, yay!

  • wow you seem to know alot!

were do you get your information from?

i think its pretty cool knowing of all of this! XD

  • Well some ppl (like meee xD) are a little obsessed with Geiko/Maiko so we tend to memorise all this stuff ^^

  • Her name is Toshihana.

  • There are some geiko too, Toshihana in the end for example. Anyway, they are gorgeous.

How do you personally think I would be approached if I were to try to become geiko? Now I know its a long shot and it has only happened for 1 time in history that a foreigner became geiko, but if I really tried?

It is one of my biggest and probably wildest dreams and goals. What would the reaction be and how is the best way to try?

  • ". . .how is the best way to try?"

Well, the first step would be to be fluent in Japanese, living in Japan; and a teenager.

  • You would need to speak Japanese fluently already... Look up the site of Liza Dalby, she has a few pieces of advice about that that sound reasonable to me.

  • @Oshidorinohina yeah, also the stripes on their neck that are not painted white.

  • I love geisha I wish I was one. I love how devoted they are and how beautiful they are. It would really lift my self-esteem if I was as beautiful as one of them.

  • It is wonderful to watch, I feel slightly guilty about watching though. And it is always interesting to see copyright claimed on the vids without permission from the subjects in the vids!

  • such elegance and refinement these ladies have. However beautiful I do not envy them the tireless devotion they pay to do thier work.

  • Maiko Fumihana is so cute! (she is at 3:33). Miyagawacho is such a beautiful place. :)

  • i really dont like the coats they wear XX

  • They don't look to flattering but I think for the most part the purpose is to just keep the kimono out of the rain. They are very pretty though.

  • I like them. I actually find them quite pretty.

  • Which is what I said too. I said that they are not very flattering, but very pretty as well.

  • I know :) (btw I'm miegiku on flickr).

  • Hey, Omedetou-sandousu!!! Ichimame and Umechika Can Can Video is on Youtube. Their routine is so cute!!!!

  • those sliding doors cant be to good to keep people out how do they keep thieves and random people out of their houses?

  • they lock, and you have to remember they have seperste districks.

  • sorry. typed that last part kinda fast, i ment seperate districts

  • oh right thanks (never been to japan so i dont realy know about that kinda stuff)

  • does anyone know what is in the bag?

a box in a bag that the geishas always have?

    thanx

    really good

    :D

  • It's what they carry around to put their fans, makeup touchup, money, etc in. Like a purse. I have seen real ones for sale by reliable sellers on Ebay, but for the price of over $500!!!

  • Inexpressively beautiful! Anatano bideo wa doumo arigatou gozaimashita..

  • ...I love your Art (^_^)

    Take care!

  • stalker!!! ;)

  • oops I mean Geiko ^_^

  • my guess is its a name Toshihana is one of the Geishas and apparently she is very well known.

  • wat is Toshihana ?

    some 1 plz answer me

  • She is a Maiko(apprentice Geisha)that lives in the geisha district called Miyagawa-cho.

  • I love the fact that thiw world still exists!

  • ...I really want one of those red umbrellas!!!

Lovely video, thank you so much for posting!

Your mother in law is lucky to live right in the middle of it all. :)

  • OH shit, that one Geiko towards the end with the dark colored raincoat(well its not called a raincoat but for now I will just give it that name) was TOSHIHANA!!!!!!

  • who's that?

  • Toshihana is an extremely popular geiko in Kyoto!

  • I'm so dumb! But is a Geiko another way of saying geisha? or is it a type of geisha?

Ps I think they are some of the most beautiful women in the planet.

  • In Kyoto, they say geiko rather than geisha. Geisha is the full ranking. Maiko is what people commonly see. They wear the white face (geisha only do so at very formal occasions) and have red in the collar and in the bun of their hair. Geisha typically wear understated kimono and have a full white collar.

  • oh thank you that was like reading the history channel only better! mauh!

  • geiko is the kyoto term for "geisha" geisha call themselves geiko while we call them geisha

  • Holy crud, you're right! I *thought* she looked familiar! :O
