Opening a comic book store is like opening any business. Do your research prior to opening to make sure there is market to serve in the area. Bear in mind that most new businesses fail. Be prepared for that. Have at least a year or more's operating costs and income before even starting. Once the store is opened, do what Alex said: keep it bright, clean, orderly, & family-friendly. Know your customers and know the product inside and out. If you have any employees, they need to be professional.
I'm okay with calling "Fairy Tales" myths. I took a mythology class in college and it can be used to describe any story a society collectively tells itself. It's usually a traditional story, typically involving supernatural beings or forces or creatures. As long as you don't say "myth" means "fake," then I won't flame.
is very clean and well organized. I think you'll find that if your the only comic shop in Durham you won't have too worry about getting customers. Plus the guy at my local just gets in anything I ask for if he dosen't have it, be friendly and helpful!
I liked X-Men: Divided We Stand the first time I saw it... when it was called Muppets Take Manhattan. Yeah they split, but really, you know how its going to end.
An organized clean comic store. What an origianl idea. There is nothing quite like going to a restaurant with an undecipherable menu that is also really dirty.
a great store needs good lighting, back issue stock that is alphabetized and actually marked with a price, good customer service, and enough room to get around to everything. If I walk into another store that pulls out a price guide to tell me what they are selling the comic for, I'll just walk right back out.
I just watched this video and noticed a subliminal message from Pete regarding his feelings towards Warlock!!!!
If you watch this video at around 7:54 when Alex and Justin are talking about Warlock, you can quietly hear pete say "Douchebag!" which I found to be absolutely hilarious! Am I the only one to notice this? You guys better watch out as he may be changing subconciously changing your feelings about Warlock!!!
Have a discount table. Just put stuff there you have to much of or need to get rid of, people will know there's cheap stuff there and look there frequently for stuff they want. I love the discount table at comic heaven
I agree with all sides re: X-Men divided we stand. We as readers know the x aren't staying disbanded for long. Would have been better if Marvel went some lengths to convince us otherwise, since it lessens the empathy we genuinely feel for the characters. Just have to take it at face value then.
Really enjoyed the discussion on X-men. Kudos to Justin for standing up for his opinions! Twice even. I'm a little shocked that you didn't mention anything about the annihilation 6 images. From what I could see, they were quite delicious looking, but it could be that I was just a little hungry... or thirsty (some of the colors reminded me of tasty fruit punch flavors...o.k. I'm off topic now.)
Agree totally with Pete's comment. Last store I went to they had punch cards. Buy ten trades, get one free. Some specifications (couldn't just buy 5.99 trades) were put on. But it was a great overall system. However, the most important aspect is credible and kind employees. I have walked into many comic shops where I was handled poorly because of the comics I read (ie. "You read Bendis? Seriously?").
Oh yeah. I've been forced to buy from a bookstore chain lately, as my local comic shop went 100% anime/manga :{ They don't just give me hell for reading Bendis. I even get it for Brubaker, David and Pak. Tools. So yeah, respectful employees might be nice. Some gentle ribbing from one fan to another is one thing, but undisguised condescenscion is not cool.
These guys are like the Ebert & Roeper of comics

Alex is right: CLEAN STORES ARE SUCCESSFUL STORES!!! So many stores look like their parents' basements. Pete's idea of discounts was a good one too.
