  • I think this version of 'Only You song is so much more emotive with that minor chord that comes in at 0:47 (for example) when they sing 'another day'. The Yazoo original has a major chord at that point, and its just not the same feeling. I love this track.

    Jass Wilder.

  • as i remember, yes they where an a capella band but someone said absolutely no instruments where used,if so i am more impressed than even at the time.

  • Keep up the good fight. We're more ugly and powerless every day so keep fighting.

  • #1 song the day I was born!

  • I was off sick from school and they played this live on some lunch time TV show. It implanted itself in my head and I still remember it. It was the first time I ever associated pickets with anything but trouble.

  • How much does the bald guy look like Voldemort?

  • my dad died that year... mom's favourite song.....

  • fucking brilliant

  • Makes me cry

  • I like acappella performed well-- like this is.

I was trying for ages to think who the singer reminded me off-- it's Al Pacino.

  • @Jigaboo123456 the lead singer is an actor called brian hibbered he has been in coronation street and emmerdale among other things

  • @davyboy232 Cheers- -i didn't mean that he was al pacino, but that wouldn't have harmed him now that he's an actor.

    Have a good New Year.

  • @davyboy232 Wasn't brian in "Twin Towns" as well? If not , he's the spit of him ! The Welsh Karake King!!

  • the yellow duck ,,,1983 ,,lol

  • yep good ol times of xmas 83 :)

  • Takes me back to that Christmas in the early 80s .spent some wonderful times in the local pub looked very similar to this .now pub sadly long demolished friends mostly passed away or moved to other areas .

  • This song was the christmas number 1 of 1983

  • Clearly u frequented sum right dives then .. lol u'll never know a 'pub'

  • No health an safety crap then in the pub. smokin an him sittin under the dart board .. oh the good old days when pubs where pubs ! lol

  • @Dancingjenni121 im a non smoker by the way ... its been the demise of Britains pubs ... the smoking ban ..

  • @Dancingjenni121 i agree, you can't even take a piss at the bar these days without getting kicked out, and what has happened to the day's when you could go down to you're local pub, stick a glass in someone's face without some nosey fucker ringing the old bill.

  • AWESOME VERSION OF THE SONG!!! However it looks like its being sung by the casting call for Dr. Who, The Musical!

  • Merry Christmas, everyone. =D

  • DAI REES , KARAOKE KING.

  • Well I was sure that it was Yazoo or Allison Moyet that made the original, but now Im not so self asure help me...

  • the best Xmas number 1 ever....shows how shit X factor really is

  • I saw Brian Hibbard in a pantomime in Norwich years ago, and he sang this :D

  • The bold 1 reminds me of Uncle Fester from the Addams Family

  • i remember when this came out,, we all thought they were a bunch of freaks,,,but when they sang we listened

  • Love this song

  • I wish I could grow mutton chops :L

  • brian hibbard has such personality. he probably lights up every room. a bit like ricky tomlinson.

  • @swastikausa I agree re Brian, but myself, I can't stand Ricky Tomlinson

  • Merry Christmas 2011 - 80's xmas hits were the best!

  • Brings back good memories, thanks for posting.

  • This version charted #1 in the UK in 1983, Germany and other countries ... It never even got on the charts in the US... Draw your own conclusions...

  • Yeah what was #1 there at the time? Paul McCarney and Michael Jackson Say Say Say nuff said really

  • @renumeratedfrog ok... i like the song :)

  • This song was number 1 on my birthday, crackin tune!

  • Lovely song, great version but from a very bleak time. Rubbish Christmas that year for many people. The irony is that Thatcher said she liked it, silly cow.

  • @laughingp Indeed, spot on. But there's something wonderfully indomitable in this, that something so beautiful could be made during such bleak hard times for those who suffered the most. Thatcher may have liked it, but she'd never understand it. Genuine spirit

  • @laughingp Eat shit, communist prick.

  • @topperheartramada Typical response to reality by a Capitalist :-)

  • @IrishChuckNorris And what is wrong with capitalism???

  • @laughingp I grew up in the 80s....we didn't really know how crap it was....only years later we are finding out! Doesn't matter a crap if Margaret Thatcher liked it or not....whats that got to do with the price of parsnips???

  • @marinac00 Haha This is priceless. You grew up in the 80's and didn't notice what was happening until 30 years later? Nothing to be proud of. The name of the band is a clue. Most people were anti Thatcher, there was a lot of unrest. One of the things Thatcher did was outlaw flying pickets , are you following this? So it was a measure of how little she understood that she said she liked it, doh! Grow your own parsnips.

  • @laughingp Thatchers problems were inherited by Labour. She failed to solve them, but she did not cause them. Same as today. Labour trash the place with dated ideology and divide and conquer politics and the tories try to mop up and fail.

  • @warriorprince1010 The financial state we're in today is a direct result of Thatcher's 'Greed is good' Britain. She freed up the banks and relaxed all the regulations which would've stopped the credit crunch and ensuing recession.

  • @warriorprince1010 Well said son! Labour are full of hippocrites such as Blair and Mandelson, shamelessly milking their contacts for all they are worth. At least the Tories don't pretend to be anything other than what they are!

  • There's a terrible sense of nostalgia in this video... but I like it a lot. ;)

  • Bloody hell, Voldemort!!!

  • Saw these chaps at a Miners' Strike benefit gig in Cambridge in 1984. My dad took me back stage to meet them, they were genuinely lovely people.

  • Excellent stuff. I met Stripe in Australia about 20 years ago. Great band and a great stage show, much more fun than this over-serious video. Happy Christmas!

  • OLDIES are better than newbies !! thumbs up if you argee..

  • you say a suprise no 1 i think not a song like that was bound to go to no1 brilliant!!! thank you lotharz

  • now that's talent..not the auto tuned over produced crap we have now. shame really.

  • Fab Fab Fab!!

  • 13 years of age when this was number 1 and had my first snog to it. I had a stiffy for a week! Thanks Anne Marie.

  • Didn't realise voldemort was in the flying pickets..

  • @wingslyp It's a British thing, most men in Cold War Britian did.

  • @eternaltoccata The Office Christmas special?
