The only version of Georgia I'd heard Richard doing was the SNL one...the way Levon raved about his singing voice in the book kept surprising me, but now I see where he was coming from...
@HagbardCeline42 do you listen to the band? how on earth were you surprised by Levon saying he had a great voice? you can listen to any song even when he's just dping harmonies it's earsex. COME ON MAN!
@tdawg1294 Yes, I have all their albums, but Richard did a lot of "living" in those years before they ever recorded an album. I can only imagine what his voice was like in those early days, and luckily this 1964 recording is a glimpse. By the early 70s he was already using vocal tricks to cover up for his fading voice. The soul was still there even if the voice couldn't always make it work, no doubts about that.
i wonder if its cause he is so young that his voice is like this, or its because its before alcohol abuse. Either way it sounds great, even later on when Georgia was performed

from this pre big pink era an awesome cd. is "ronnie hawkins and the hawks - the roulette years", 2 discs the majority is released stuff w/ ronnie doing all lead vocals, his stuff. But the most interesting tracks are from a day ronnie was off and the 5 did studio tracks that were much different and not meant for release called the sexy ways session. levon does the vocals.
brian, you have given a gift beyond words. i am 68 years and have wanted to hear anything from the show. much obliged.
being from arkansas, i followed ronnie hawkins and the hawks and levon and the hawks every time they came down. we had heard of this show plus a ronnie hakins live show from onterio, also. it was good to hear something from those times from the greatest bunch pf talent ever in one band.
@bee1king , mate from a 45 yr old Australian at home with a cold, your generous comments are a gift for all of us, and I hope you make another 68 yrs.
@crankypete, hey man you, like i, have stumpled onto one of the best treasures on the net, you are all the richer for it. thanks again to brian
i wish everyone could have heard them back then. although The Band stuff is without peer, they were so full of electric blues type rock. simply fantastic.
beak(richard) in those days was so soulful and had rick harmonizing on many songs. levon was solid rock and rockabilly.
pete, listen to this stuff and your cold has to get better. rock on, bro
Oh my gosh that was incredible! I read about this in Levons book and have been wanting to hear this show ever since! Thanks you so, so much for sharing!!!!!
@brian600lyle Hey, this is an absolutely amazing performance! I have never heard Richard sound like that. If it wasn't too much trouble, I would love a copy of this album as well. I literally just made this YouTube account so I can start trying to find more of these awesome live performances. Thanks for posting man!
what a great song to post...i thought i had exhausted the internet of their performances. i have read about this show and been dying to hear it. thanks man. if you have any tips to share on where i can look for more i'd be thrilled.
I need to second this. I read about it in Levon's book. Love to hear Richard in his prime...but' OH do I ever love his falsetto! IMO there was never a band better than The Band!
wow. what a great song to post! i have read about this show / album and have been dying to hear it. thanks for putting it up. if you have a tip on where i could look, Id be thrilled to hear more.
Have been lookingfor a copy of this to pass on to my Dad. As a kid i used to hang out in Port Dover and the Summer Gardens ( once known as Pop Ivey's Ballroom) where this was recorded.
Is there any way i can get a copy of this show recording?

7/12/64 some interesting dates. Ray C was turning 30 9/60 when he released his version. Richard was 21 the day of this recording and 33 in 1976.

is that what thye called themselves if they did a show without Ronnie? or was it between being the hawks and the band?
CodeOuch 5 months ago
@CodeOuch it was their period between their time with ronnie hawkins and bob dylan
