i have never heard them called Levon Helm and the Hawks... only Ronnie Hawkins and the Hawks.

is that what thye called themselves if they did a show without Ronnie? or was it between being the hawks and the band?

The only version of Georgia I'd heard Richard doing was the SNL one...the way Levon raved about his singing voice in the book kept surprising me, but now I see where he was coming from...

@HagbardCeline42 do you listen to the band? how on earth were you surprised by Levon saying he had a great voice? you can listen to any song even when he's just dping harmonies it's earsex. COME ON MAN!

@tdawg1294 Yes, I have all their albums, but Richard did a lot of "living" in those years before they ever recorded an album. I can only imagine what his voice was like in those early days, and luckily this 1964 recording is a glimpse. By the early 70s he was already using vocal tricks to cover up for his fading voice. The soul was still there even if the voice couldn't always make it work, no doubts about that.

from this pre big pink era an awesome cd. is "ronnie hawkins and the hawks - the roulette years", 2 discs the majority is released stuff w/ ronnie doing all lead vocals, his stuff. But the most interesting tracks are from a day ronnie was off and the 5 did studio tracks that were much different and not meant for release called the sexy ways session. levon does the vocals.

brian, you have given a gift beyond words. i am 68 years and have wanted to hear anything from the show. much obliged.

being from arkansas, i followed ronnie hawkins and the hawks and levon and the hawks every time they came down. we had heard of this show plus a ronnie hakins live show from onterio, also. it was good to hear something from those times from the greatest bunch pf talent ever in one band.

hopefully, i can hang on to hear the rest.

i wish everyone could have heard them back then. although The Band stuff is without peer, they were so full of electric blues type rock. simply fantastic.

beak(richard) in those days was so soulful and had rick harmonizing on many songs. levon was solid rock and rockabilly.

I need to second this. I read about it in Levon's book. Love to hear Richard in his prime...but' OH do I ever love his falsetto! IMO there was never a band better than The Band!
