Michael, you articulate so plainly and eloquently everything I have long suspected and recognised to be wrong in society and the modern church but can't put into a cogent argument myself. Thank you.
ALL Catholics over age 15 MUST read the "CATECHISM of the CATHOLIC CHURCH, Second Edition". (green cover)
" CCC #1791 IGNORANCE can often be imputed to personal responsibility. This is the case when a man takes little trouble to find out what is true and good, or when conscience is by degrees almost blinded through the habit of committing sin. In such cases, the person is culpable for the evil he commits. "
Contraception, homosexual acts, adultary, fornication, pornography, are EVIL,
THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU Michael for saying it: the primary mission of the Catholic church is to save souls, NOT perform charity. Atheists are charitable. What drives them is love of man and themselves. They don't do it for God. It offends me greatly that the St. Vincent DePaul society does exactly this: they hand out charity without strings attached. If don't use this as an opportunity to evangelize, they're not doing God's work. They're no different from the Medicare/Medicaid office.
It is always good to hear Michael's lucid comments on the reality of where we are. It is good to hear the Holy Father, today grappling with atheist hate in England and doing so with his usual authority and dignity, supported in such trenchant terms. God bless you Michael.
@Ted Seeber. The video never says soup kitchens are evil. Feeding the poor is one of the Corporal Acts of Mercy. However, such things are secondary to the salvation of souls. As C.S. Lewis said, "Aim for earth and you lose heaven. Aim for heaven and you get earth thrown in."
This guy was my religion teacher at St.Philip Neri in the Bronx. He was a big part of our live as Students back then. Really wish you stuck around! Our class need you back then with everything that happened back then. you really was a positive role model for a lot of us.
And Judas said "this oil could have been sold and given to the poor..." with his eyes fixed firmly NOT on Jesus - the first attempt to turn the Church into a group of social workers. I love this post Michael. "If salt lose it's flavour, it is good for nothing except to be cast aside and trampled underfoot" and we sure are getting a good "trampling underfoot"!! today. - Blessings - Rene
Jesus said that we should give to those who are in need but He was speaking to us as individuals not collectively. He was saying that each of us personally would be judged, at least partially, at the "Final Judgment", what we have done personally to help the least of our brothers. When The Church, or people in it, lobby the government to be Socialist/Communist and "take" from the rich to give to the poor it is pressuring the government to commit the crime of robbery.
Compassion and Works are seen daily in Catholic life, lived for God...in the efforts of Catholic soup kitchens and services all over the world, Missionaries of Charity, small town and parish centers efforts in helping the poor, Catholic Charities, etc. The Church has no paucity in efforts such as these. None. Mother Teresa would agree with everything Michael has said here. Faith and God first, no matter what.
Perhaps soup kitchens or government funded social services which serve the needy when staffed with people with genuine love and a commitment to serve the Church and indeed the world will lead people to discover the living Catholic Church that feeds and heals our souls. Awsome presenation. The Holy Father is clearly emerging as one of the most powerful intellects and teachers of the new millenium.
I don't get it, what is so evil about charity and preventing pollution that it endangers faith? For me, my FAITH is what causes me to be charitable and want to prevent pollution. If it wasn't for God, Global Warming would hold no fear for me- after all, the changes will happen long after I'm dead. If not for God, why bother with soup kitchens, for what does the welfare of other human beings have to do with me (like Cain, am I my brother's keeper)?
@RealCatholicTV >>"Nothing - but many people use such things as an excuse for the evils of population control, eugenics, etc. etc."
These evils seem to me to be against charity. In fact, eugenics is directly against soup kitchens (because if you feed the poor, you enable them to survive and make more poor people). What exactly is the connection used here? I don't know of a single CATHOLIC soup kitchen promoting population control and eugenics- in fact, often the opposite.
@TedSeeber Yes - this is the point. The people PROMOTING the excessive use of social justice are the ones advocating contraception, abortion, gay marriage etc. There are lots of advocacy groups which are funded with Catholic dollars against the teaching of the Church.
This is not about sopu kitchens being bad - it is the fact there are people who are using soup kitchens as a smokescreen.
One of the things the Catholic Church and it's laity do best is serve the poor and serve others. We are a people of Faith and Works. The point is that there is a political agenda out there that corruptly attaches itself to "service" . This agenda is rooted in marxism, communism and Power over others. This movement seeks to use Christians and their pure acts of kindness and charity for political purposes/gain. We need to be keenly aware of this and expose it for what it is.
The Church, at least in the United States, would be much better off spiritually if Oregon Catholic Press burned to the ground. They provide the majority of American parishes with music resources that are firmly rooted in socialist themes, liberation theology, as well as some of the world's worst music ever to be labeled "Catholic." Music is a powerful catechist, and when OCP's English translation of the "Panis Angelicus" is twisted into yet another song about feeding the poor, OCP has to go.
@PioKolby - Only if you think feeding children and enabling them to survive is Eugenics. Only if you disagree with our Holy Father Pope Benedict XVI and think that a soup kitchen is anything more than the basic duty of the rich to care for the poor. (to paraphrase Caritas In Veritate). But there is a good point in here, buried- and that is our love for Christ, whether or not that brings salvation for ourselves, should be our motive; not mere care for the poor.
@TedSeeber If the point is burried - it is because YOU are burying it by accusing good Catholics of not caring for the poor and misinterpreting what they are saying. The agenda of those people using social justice AS A SMOKESCREEN is eugenics.
Pope Benedict XVI isn't Just Amazing like the Early Popes.
He is Continuously reminding us of the Early Martyred Popes.

I believe Pope Benedict will also be declared a Saint. He is as wonderful as JPII in his own way. I love him!

@RealCatholicTV - I wasn't the one who first mentioned Soup Kitchens as being evil- the video did.
Cut through the smokescreen and talk about Abortion and Eugenics instead, if that is your intention.

@TedSeeber If you are going to flatly lie about what the video says (we NEVER say soup kitchens are evil) I see no reason to allow you to post here.
Go away and learn some honesty.
