I never compare apples to oranges. 2010 is now deservedly considered a classic science fiction film. Once you understand that 2001 stands alone in its greatness, you can appreciate the sequel for what it is. A faithful adaptation of the work of one of the greatest science fiction writers of all time. I enjoyed the theme of rebirth and resurrection, a constant throughout the film, especially HAL's.

You can't compare 2001 and its sequel. 2010 never purported to have the cinematic artistry of Kubrick's piece yet 2010 at least had a screenplay,plot and some great acting from the likes of Scheider reprising the role of Heywood Floyd and also Helen Mirren and John Lithgow - you could relate more to the characters also. I personally love 2010 though I see the merits of 2001 and its groundbreaking nature.

@Vejur9000 i agree with everything about your statement...except the film being faithful to the book. In the film, the Soviet and Americans are protrayed as distrusting one another and that the world is on the brink of World War III. In the book, this was not so, in fact Floyd was highly respected by the Soviet crew. And they completely ignored the Chinese landing on Europa and the tragedy of the Tsien.

Dave Bowman knew this and told Hal 9000 to send a message to Earth that ment that the new planets of Jupiter were their's for the taking, except Europa. The Monolith doesn't want humans there. They might tamper with the life its making.

I actually like the more acclaimed 2001 film also (the ONLY one in my family who likes it), but I too find 2001 BORING at times, while 2010, is very watchable from start to finish. Despite it's dated Cold War theme, on it's own 2010 is a wonderful movie, better than most of today's films.

Its too bad the Bluray as had a poor remix! Yes I have the original first edition on region 2 DVD six-track Dolby stereo! The bluray has had the stereo left and right discrete folded onto the monaural surrounds SIGH! Also the centre phantom stereo front has been folded onto the centre discrete, I kid you not! Thus the Bluray has fake stereo surrounds! The film was originally produced in (70mm Dolby format 42) not (70mm Dolby format 43).

Do not sale your DVD unless your 100% sure!
