  • If you want to really hear her hold a note then listen to the last 20 seconds of "Piece of Sky" from the album Yentl. I timed it at 19.2 seconds.

  • My dream in life is to be Barbra Streisand.

  • I LOVE HER!!!!

  • i like her expression at the end.

  • this note, piece of sky, and somewhere - - - love the long notes

  • Was this ever released on cd? Anyone know which one?

  • @alixr No. This is from 1988 conducted by the great Rupert Holmes. To date, most of these sessions have not been released. :((

  • the notes great , the song sucks

  • If you like this recording, check out BARBRA's version of GLOCCA MORRA- Take Two. Her adoring fans will fall in love her...again.

  • that's called singing!

  • UNBEIELIEVABLE ! she is just amazing !! I have loved her for ever. Mara

  • I'm her

  • I'm her

  • SENSATIONELL

    Werner

  • flawless

  • Holy!

  • I love how she rolled her eyes @ 3:47 like "Whew glad that's over"

  • @musicforever92 i know what you mean. maybe she wasn't satisfied, lol. idk

  • Does she breathe though her eyes or what?!?! Wow, amazing, just pure and amazing!

  • Holy shit.

  • ...whoa.

  • She's the original songbird. I love her. She is an inspiration.

  • OH MY GOD!!!!!!!!!! AMAZING!!!!

  • your asking me about Streisand voice? gezz I could right a book about that..lol she can easily sing a higher note than the Big Bad wolf ending and she has on Space caption the end of Since I Fell For you if you listen carefully it is higher and not a drop of screaming involved. And as for lower than Whitney? absolutely there are endless examples, listen to the The Ladies Who lunch pretty Women where she ends the first part with [THERE THERE] before going into here's to the Ladies who lunch.

  • @kyolym@Steve. Barbra is a natural vocal Phenomenon she posses one of the most natural voices imaginable which is why she has a vibrato in literally every range because it is not forced or is she creating it, it is just there like her breathing. She sings like she speaks which is also why she can sing in a vibrato whisper and belt off as well and which is why she does not take lessons or practice because that would not make sense to her and is also why she does not understand that concept.

  • @kyolym@Steve, Her voice also I believe has a lot to do with the shape of her head, neck, nose and forehead. that great Nefertiti shape?Do you think she looks like that for nothing? lol there is alot of space in there and she was built to sing like she does. she has great amps inside her. I feel her voice starts at the tip of her nose goes right to the top of her forehead and fly's straight to the back of her head and out on the high notes. She does not block her voice with any thought -continued

  • @kyolym@Steve, because her voice is so natural to her she does not think about where her voice is going ,will she hit that high note ect. which is also why she is so vocally free. A good lesson to learn from her NEVER thing about your voice a good exercise for this is to sing when you are reading or writing you will feel a huge difference in vocal freedom and start getting use to it. I dont recommend lessons they can ruin a good voice. If YOU NEED THEM BADLY forget it unless u r doing opera

  • @kyolym@steve, If I had to pick 5 of Barbra Streisand best vocal albums they would be - People, Space Caption, The Way We Were, Lazy Afternoon and Yentl. Listen to them and you will see what I mean her longest note can be heard on movie Parade passes by, u wanna bet, other instruments album, end of WET song, enough is enough, Piece O sky and this one here. The end of the song WET is a perfect example of her control it is done in a whisper with that stunning natural vibrato try to do it like that

  • Please, what´s the Name of this song? Its wonderfull!!!

  • She is so amazing. Such an incredible talent!

  • Thank you so much for your quick response, amazing!!! I will certainly check the songs from Candide, hope is on a cd that I can purchase, Thank you again.

    Raul T.

  • what song is this? I don;t think I have it

  • @RaulTres Its Make Our Garden Grow. The Finale for Leonard Bernstein's Candide. If you think this is good, you MUST check out the song Glitter and Be Gay from the show...the most demanding female song I've EVER heard...I don't even think Babs could do it.

  • The note begins at 3:26

    Lungs of steel.

  • Love the eye roll at the very end! ;)

  • What song is this?

And Barbra Streisand is so amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • holy crap! is she human!!!

  • is it possilbe to get an mp3 of the audio?

  • Breathtaking! Unbelievable! That last long and high note is just amazing. Perfect interpretation, for sure.

  • @JayTj2 no one asked you. haters gonna hate, you should be banned from here anyway

  • Comment removed

  • Sweet Jesus. And yes, I counted 19 seconds exactly. What is her longest held note, does anyone know? (I think Jan Werner supposedly has the record for longest male note. If anyone knows of a more current record, pls post here.) Thx.

  • I THINK THAT WAS MORE THAN 19 SECONDS!!! I COUNTED LIKE 23

  • LMFAAAAOOO. 3:37 When she stops, her face is like "SHIT. THAT WAS SO LONG."

  • who cares how long she held it..it didnt sound good.

  • what world do you live in..really i mean really..

  • @Mrfoo2002 um are you deaf? you must be

  • Another long note that is filmed is at the end of the song "I Got Rhythm" at the end of "Act One" of her 1973 TV special "Barbra Streisand. . . And Other Musical Instruments"

  • We sang this song in my high school choir. :D

  • I believe the longest note barbra ever held was in the song Piece of the Sky from the movie Yentl...I think the note was over minute, with the second longest note she held was in Somewhere from her Broadway album...

  • ...what for a voice ! :-)

  • thumps up, if you were waiting for that note so bad and was blown away when you finally heard it.

  • This is "Make Our Garden Grow," the finale from Leonard Bernstein's musical, "Candide." In the actual show, it's a duet that builds to the full chorus. Pretty powerful stuff.

  • please someone tell me, what is the title of this song.

  • wow goosebumps, um .

  • That's insane! At about 12 seconds I'm thinking no way she can keep this going! At 16 secs I'm thinking ok, she's done. Incredible. And not just because it's 19.4 seconds but the POWER and BRILLIANCE for that 19 seconds is mind boggling!

  • WHAT A VOICE! Thank you for posting this video.

  • was that even human?

  • That's great but I don't like her vibrato at all...

  • @GCassa94 it's the most beautiful vibrato I've ever heard! how can you not like it? her vibrato changes depending on the song...

  • @stevesg92 maybe you're right but I just don't like her vibrato in ths...

  • @GCassa94 I can perfectly understand what you're saying about the vibrato... it's very interesting... I think that if the belt is very long like this one the voice naturally changes to vibrato after a while and since it is meant to be I don't know the technical word for it but sung " clearly" without vibrating, it comes out really fast....have you watched her 1994 concert? there's many samples of her vibrato in that... very strong and not thin at all

  • @stevesg92 I think you're right her vibrato was stronger and a lot better...I saw her signing The Way We Were in 1994 and it was amazing

  • @stevesg92 dead wrong, it is exactly the opposite, it is much harder to hold a note this long WITH vibrato which takes more air to do so, studied voice for 30 years.

  • @kyolym Oh ok...I see.. interesting... I would have thought the opposite....I've got a question for you about Streisand's voice: a video on youtube shows her vocal range which is 3 octaves from b2 i think to d6.... now for example the lowest note whitney houston sang was a2..... firstly couldn't barbra easily sing that low? and secondly.... if she hit a d6 so effortlessly and powerfully at the end of who's afraid of the big bad wolf how much higher do you think she could have gone? thanks!

  • @GCassa94 For me,her vibrato is natural one.Having vibrato is good for our voice. If we just sustain a very long note without vibrato. Our voice can easily get hurt.Besides, vibrato can also avoid our long notes become waver.

  • She is the best! We are so lucky to have her!

  • No singers of nowadays can sing like her and hold the high notes as well, all is tecnichally made in computers.

  • It's not even like it was a low effort 19 seconds, she went after it!

  • She does 19 seconds in A Piece of Sky too. She's amazing

  • @emshi21 holding it for 19 seconds isn't actually impressive what's amazing is that it sounds that beautiful, clean, smooth and so impeccably high... that's impressive and no one can sing like her.

  • I've heard this piece done many many times in its original context: operatically. I've heard it, a few times live, from some of the most praised opera singers on the stage...and yet, this is the most moving performance I've heard. She's a true artist.

  • @PianistandFencer what is the name of the song?

  • @123buffylover "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide by Bernstein :) Great music!

  • @PianistandFencer thank you :)

  • I appreciate an artist who isn't only awesome but who was also classically trained

  • @Nick83115 Barbra wasn't classically trained, at least to begin with (I don't think she ever was). She was advised that formal training would wreck the uniqueness of her voice.

  • @JustaBroadwayBaby55 ohh wow! could have fooled me! she's still amazing either way though!

  • I am happy to be living in a time when there's a Barbra Streisand...truly a once in a lifetime talent...much like Whitney Houston and Rufus Wainwright. Very lucky indeed.

  • God, she makes me smile so big <3

  • What's the name of this song? I do not know anyone who can sustain a note as long as Barbra Streisand does

  • @kaqcruz03 mariah held a 18 second note, and christina held a 19 second note, but you might not like either of them

  • @123buffylover I do! I like both Mariah and Christina, can you share the videos where they sustained the notes? I'd love to see it =)

  • @kaqcruz03 i lost the mariah video, but she did it on a song for glitter, and christina's was at last stripped tour

  • AMAZING ! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

  • @shirusubemonaku mariah carey is still up there.. you cant count her out

  • @shirusubemonaku list of singers better than gaga: barbra, celine, mariah, christina, beyonce, lea, jennifer, amber, chris, judy, charice i can keep going but i'll stop

  • Eternal,sublime,heavely,priceless,infinitly BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!

  • estrela unica

  • diva forever...

  • Her voice is absolutely amazing.

  • she's awesome..

  • Try to remember, y'all...this is only a practice run. If there are mistakes and mispronounced words in this clip, that's because it's only practice recording...not the actual video. Give Ms. Streisand the credit she deserves. I mean, how many artists, past or present can last this long in the entertainment business and still produce record- breaking CDs and concerts? Babs is the ONLY artist to have #1 albums/CDs from five consecutive decades. GAGA can't top that feat...lol

  • @BlackDaddy634 : Good point. We also need to remember that she's singing with a recording--that's not so easy to do. In a live performance, the conductor can follow the artistry of the singer, slowing or speeding up the accompaniment. If you watch carefully you'll see that Streisand is struggling not because she's performing badly, but because she is being forced to fight her own artistic inclinations to add finesse to the song just so that she can match the speed of the orchestra.

  • @BlackDaddy634 GAGA = CACA!

  • @BlackDaddy634 gaga HASN'T achieved that YET. cuz gaga's still young, unlike the grandma Streisand who has been around for like 100 years

  • @shirusubemonaku I love lady gaga, but do you honestly beleive that Lady GaGa will be able to belt? Lady GaGa is a good singer, she has a nice voice. But she doesnt have a belting voice. Lady GaGa hasnt belted in any of her songs yet. When Barbara Streisand was her age she could already riff and run, belt, acrobat, etc. I LOVE LADY GAGA but Lady GaGa VS Barbara Streisand, (VOICE VS VOICE) Barbara wins.

  • I've never doubted this woman's ability. It's clear she's got the pipes and the control to work them. I wonder if there are vids/films of her in the studio recording "A Piece of Sky". My feeling is that the "ultimate" collection series is still ahead of us. She is just amazing. Truly amazing.

  • I haven't even listened to the famed belted note yet, but wow! Streisand is struggling here! She can't find pitch, mispronounces words, struggles with the most basic musical elements. She is not proud of this performance!

  • That was actually prtety amazing, considering i can't hold a 19 second note with my talking Voice ! Wow i didn't know she was that good !

  • She has ringing in the ears like me.. it's annoying and you can hear things literally from miles away.. the noise volume is something else. She was talking about this. Bionic hearing.. It's not fun because you hear constant ringing, or humming in your ears.. hard to sleep because of that as well.

  • Absolutely phenominal, I'm sat here speechless, incredible range and notes! wow.

  • so much respect.

  • DAMN

  • Whoa!

  • honestly, glee was right, barbra IS 1 in 1,000,000, and the closest to her are kristen chenoweth, celine dion, and lea michele

  • @123buffylover don't forget Ann Wilson of Heart

  • @shamrockviolet: Good question. Most people have no clue who she is. If you read the hundreds of entries below, you will stumble on the one that prompted my remark. In a nutshell, she is a European Streisand wannabe who has developed a concert following in Europe... Technically OK but decidedly unoriginal.

  • What song is this?

  • Wow I just discover Barba Streisand. Why doesn't my generation have music like this?

  • @witch26071 I'm 17 and LOVE Barbra Streisand. I don't understand why others my age or even a little older can't appreciate music like this, yet they can listen to all the pop crap. I mean, I like pop music too, but people my age seem to think it's better than flawless talent such as Barbra Streisand.

  • @breecullen101 Its funny because I never heard her sing before until this and she is amazing!

  • @breecullen101 SAME. everyone is like all Taio Cruz, Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga (actually I love Lady Gaga but still) I can enjoy the pop crap but if my options were to see Flo Rida or Barbara Streisand (or someone like her) I would ALWAYS choose Barbara.

  • @witch26071 There are some good young singers coming up, but for the most part, people don't have respect for the older traditions that they could learn a lot from. If you think this is good, go check out Sarah Vaughan whom I find was a much better singer.

  • @CalifaJohn You simply cannot compare Vaughan and Streisand, each masters of their own particular genre.

  • @witch26071 Because we've traded "try harder, reach higher, become better" for "here, every fat lazy kid gets a trophy for sitting on the bench".

  • @witch26071 That's great... the greatest singer of all time!

  • @witch26071 Well... everything is better in hindsight, my father was telling me how his parents were disgusted by the Beatles and saying "what's wrong with the music of today" but today one just has to go to a Beatles video to see all the praise for them. Nothing is good or bad, its just perspective.

  • @witch26071 Because it's too easy now with fancy vocal enhancers and other things to make them sound good when they really aren't.

  • the greatest thing is that she sounds exactly like this LIVE on a stage with nothing but a microphone

  • what song is this? I want ittt!!!

  • everytime i watch one of her videos i think of the nanny lol :)

  • this song should have been included in her album!!

  • i haven't any word for this great performance of this song

  • I do agree with you, but the power of the note and the amount air she lets out in "A piece of sky" is far greater performance,

  • @titancan you betcha! that note is the greatest sound ever in the movies. i can hold it too, when i'm in the car sining to myself, but it takes a time and a lot of practice to make it!

  • This is just incredible, that voice! Even without holding the note that long, the purity, the strength, the beauty of her voice, wow, I wish mine was half as good!

  • 1 she's lip synching her and any good singer can tell that this isn t live

    2. 19 seconds isn t that impressive to be honest for any good singer, which she is.

Barbra is a perfectionist and this vid was done at the time to "impress" and show her perfection in the studio but it staged. I ve spent a lot of time in studios and it s obvious it was pre recorded.

I think she s good, don t get me wrong

  • @leftfieldmind PUTA KA. BULAG AT BINGI KA BA... LIVE ITO

  • @leftfieldmind It's the album version - showing her recording a nineteen second belt. She's sung "A Piece of Sky" from Yentl, live, which has an eighteen second belt, which was just as impressive as this.

  • @leftfieldmind why would you say she's lip synching? that wouldn't matter for Barbra Streisand because she sounds ( or more like sounded) exactly the same live so your comment is pointless.

  • wow

  • holy shit?

  • a great singer comes ONCE in every generation....

but a talent like Barbara comes only ONCE in a lifetime.

i just hope she doesn't stop singing.

  • Here is what makes this note so remarkable which most people do not realize. First off, it probably can be done by some but few very very well trained singers that have mastered great breath control but Barbra is singing the note at full blast which most such singers would be out of breath in seconds and on top of that to do the note as she does here full blast and totally consistent from start to finish, The only other singer I know of to do this is Johnny Mathis who was also trained in opera.

  • @kyolym - I wonder how many of you have studied music and have taken up studies in voice? Really - 19 seconds is not long at all for the trained voice especially where she is isinging n the treble cleft setting. Just so you see where I am coming from - middle C - I am referencing as C1 as it is the start of treble cleft notes. Most females talk in the C2 range of TREBLE cleft - so holding the note is really not a challenge at all and if you are trained it is even easier.

  • @gene1536 true, but there is a huge difference between holding the note just because someone can hold a note for 19 seconds so so and holding the note with such outstanding quality in tone, power beauty and dramatics as only Babra can here....yes I studied voice for 40 years

  • @gene1536 you are wrong.barbra don't went for any vocal training before. She don't even breath deeply from her diaphragm before.Never.She don't even know how to read music as similar as Luciano Pavaraotti.Barbra is a classic instinct.Did you hear she BELTS 19 seconds of long notes before in "A piece of sky"?Do you think anyone can belts like her?Sorry for my bad English.

  • It isn't bad, some people right worse... and Babara is one of the greatest

    @yongsua1989

  • @gene1536 yes but with THIS voice it is incredible... the greatest voice of all time

  • why she never released this is beyond me it is a pure masterpiece. Remeber, she is just rehearing it. The woman is a reason to get up in the morning. when she holds the last note you could faint. Can't wait for "Gypsy". I saw someone wrote something about Whitney Houston. Her comeback did not work out she is probably back on drugs she never sang complex song like this and has no interprative skills.

  • why she never released this is beyond me it is a pure masterpiece. Remeber, she is just rehearing it. The woman is a reason to get up in the morning. when she holds the last note you could faint. Can't wait for "Gypsy"

  • What song is this?

  • @stardusth2o This is Make Our Garden Grow from Candide by Leonard Bernstein.

  • Did anyone else see her face after she ended the note and right before the fade out? She made a face like she was out of breath. Who wouldn't be? I don't get why Whitney Houston fans always act like Barbra can't sing.

  • @DaxShaw BECAUSE THERE ALL ON CRACK

  • @kyolym LOL! Must be if they think Barbra can't sing.

  • @kyolym = LOL - I love it!

  • And that, my dear folks, is what you call exceptional singing by probably one of the top five most important voices in pop music history! She has hold more than 19 seconds before of a certain note. Look at Piece of Sky. I think it is around 20 to 23 seconds for the last note!

  • A question: the long note that she make in "No more tears (enough is enough)" at the beginning and in the end of the song... is real? because is great!!!!! like the one in "Holly Ground" and so many others!!!!!

  • @scgs78 of course it's real! when she was younger she could singer like that exactly the same live!

  • what is the title of the song??

  • @reignraven "Make Our Garden Grow" from Candide (operetta) by Leonard Bernstein

  • The voice of the 20th century.

  • She has a luxurious voice, exceptionally smooth.

She also holds a 19 second note at the end of 'just a piece of sky'.

The every last note is 'sky' and it is also after a long note as well.

I don't know of any that can hit a clear note as that and be as steady until the end.

    wonderful!

  • Yes it is a natural belt - and can be done very easily - and if you have exceptional control - you can hold it much longer - it is only a C sharp. (c2 - c sharp).

  • @gene1536 It's a C5, and it is hard in full chest voice.

  • @rekupp - It is NOT hard and she is one octave above middle "C" in treble clef. So call it what you want - it is a natural belt and I can sing it all day and night long as any person with a trained voice can do. Some of us who use the upper ranges consider middle "C" as C1 and high "C" as C3. A C5 in treble clef is considered the whistle register!

Middle "C" is the start of TREBLE clef - that is why some refer to it as C1 and do not continue the count from Bass Clef notes.

  • Look at her nose!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • @muchkinhot Well look at yours

  • @muchkinhot fuck you

  • You know as amazing as this is, she is really just running through the song for the SECOND time to get the hang of it. In other words, this is a VERY EARLY REHEARSAL. There is another video of the first run where she realized she needed to make some adjustments.Unbelievable!

  • Barbra Streisand is a once in a lifetime talent. The warmth, depth and phrasing of the voice comes from a very intelligent person with a higher consciousness with a lot of natural feeling. These other singers, while delightful, are not in her class. There was only one Piaff, one Garland and now, One Streisand. The closest to a great voice we have today is Celine Dion.

  • @TheJackielee3 even though she dont belt out songs that often Adele is the great voice of this generation...

  • @TheJackielee3 Celine Dion isn't anywhere close to Barbra's level. There are plenty of brilliant singers on Broadway nowadays, just look for them.

  • @SeveralMimi C#5

  • @buddhaman4518 for sure its not easy but its real from barbra and not fake like some poeple think here on the chat, BARBRA S THE BEST AND FOREVER WILL BE, and poeple can try to be like her but ,, ahah they can try

  • nice classical style with just a hint of added brightness, love her!

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • This is great. I love the look she gives at the very end, right after she cuts off the note. It's like, "shit, that's a long note."

  • jesus.. great

  • amazing. love this.

  • amazing.

  • What would the world have ever been like without this voice?
