@agreygod this is a AE86 but it's a SR5 which is a lower spec ae86 sorta like AE85 but still on AE86 chassis. btw I think you need to know your Initial D too cuz Takumi's 86 is a TRD Group A 20v Silvertop 4AG that produces approx. 240 HP at 11,000 RPM
@Infuse16 Hell, there's even a point during which they mention it's a silvertop if memory serves.
But I haven't seen it in years.
In some ways, I wish that show hadn't happened- I love the styling of the old 'Rolla but they sell for far more than they're actually worth now... Don't get me wrong, Initial D was great fun to watch.
Hey Dudes i need some help, my silvertop is having an idling problem, when the engine is cold its idle is flactuating real bad, and even if i'm running at high speed my engine would die. But when my engine is warm its idling is fine as if nothing is wrong,, i already changed my spark plug, oil and still nothing happened,, need help guys
@richardmaudsley77 similar to what honda has vtec for, the fifth valve is for the vvt-i it opens up on the intake side for better breathing capabilities. more air into the head equals more power.
I'm doing research before deciding what engine I want, so I'm going to ask you, why did you choose the silvertop over the black top? What do you like about the silver top?
I can answer this for pasi, i bought this car from him...the silvertop is simply less expensive than the blacktop. its a bit less horsepower and compression. I would go with the blacktop if you had the extra money. Everything works better on the blacktop.
well, from my very little experience, the blacktop does cost somewhat more, and just for 3bhp of difference between the blacktop and the silvertop, i'd go with the latter...
well in the states the cost is evident. or at least ive seen 100% of the time...and the blacktop uses lighter and beefier internals..so the difference bewteen the engine is there. just like the bluetop vs. hi-comp 4ag engines.
whats a geo prizm? like a corolla right? depends how much money you have. i have a 94 holden nova (which is general motors rebadged corolla in australia lol) i replaced the air filter and headers (with 4-2-1's) for not much money and hollowed the cat. its noticibly quicker. but if i wasnt a student id spring for a turbo :P but i have a hilux to do up as well... so maybe one day!
It says in the description "open ITBs," basically, in the original AE101, there's a box that goes over them, and that's connected to a cold air box itself, if I remember correctly.
big difference. blactop (BT) has 1. Bigger ITBs 2. No AFM 3. Thinner lighter rods 4. better head (bigger ports, more efficient head flow) 5. Stiffer valvesprings 6. Higher rev limit, the BT can rev to 9,000 7. Higher compression. 8. more hp 9. more expensive than the ST Basically if you want to stay all motor, get the BT if you want to turbo on the stock internals the ST would be the better choice. Parts are interchangeable for all 4age. And you can use GZE pistons and rods.
AFM = Airflow Meter it measures the speed of the incoming air. The ECU then uses that information to calculate how much fuel to give the engine.
Compression ratio is hard to explain wikipedia it. But basically its how much the piston squishes the incoming air and fuel, before the spark plugs ignite it.
Higher compression = more power
Toyota gave the BT lighter rods and pistons, stiffer valvesprings, bigger ports, and bigger valves. All of that helps it rev higher than the ST
the valve springs are the same and the rods wont last long at 9000RPM, the hyraulic belt tensioner is crap too. Spool rods are pretty cheap for these engines though
mofo92 a 4age can b beat a type r...any day...its just an type r...and dude...racing is out of style man...u gotta have money to mod a toyota or nissan...not like honda....

I think nice is when theres no external coolant pipes at all, the best thing you can do is to convert these to something like the 16v spec coolant design
Heya.. am thinking about doing the open quad conversion to my silvertop, what blacktop parts did you use other than the ECU? Did you modify the silvertop loom to use a map sensor, or use a blacktop loom? Would you say you made much of a power gain from this?
good choice of engine, the ae86 is quicker with a supercharged ae111 sprinter trueno 20v engine than a turbo sr20 180sx engine. i have tried this with 2 85 sprinters and the supercharged 20v was better its lighter aswell and you stiil have the toyota reliability . that 20v trueno engine is bullet proof
if you have a 4th-6th gen celica ST, the mounts should be the same. as long as the chassis code under the hood starts with AT (i think celica st's were 162,182,202) it should mount up just fine. i dont know about wiring though.
almost every jdm engine site has them for sale. awesome motors, ive owned a silvertop and a blacktop, both of which are very fun to drive on. lack of torque in the very bottom kinda sucks though.
It's not an itake, it's ITB's... aka Individual Throttle Bodies. air filters are made to fit over those, if one so chooses, but are not required. but what was elimiated? the ITB plenum thingy, and the MAF (mass air flow) sensor, which was repalced with a MAP sensor (manifold air pressure)
ahahah Silvertop is the 20v bluetop is the stock 4age engine and redtop is the high comp ide call you and idiot but i asked that same question to my bro
the Blue top is the stock engine in the GT-S. The red top is a supercharged version out of an MR-2 i believe. the silver top is a 20V version out of the AE101 and the blacktop is also a 20v out of a AE111. The blue tops run about 112-130 HP depending on what exact model engine it is.
the aw11 mr2 used the big port blue top. the ae92 trueno/levin used the small port red top(higher compression, later models had no TVIS). the aw11 supercharged used the 4a-gze, which was a solid grey top.
actually the different color tops only refer to a paint scheme. blue tops came first, they tended to have the big ports and such, then red tops, however both heads are 16v and more or less interchange. The 4AGEZ has a super-charger and came with both blue and red tops and was available in bot AE86 and AE92 MR2's and Corollas, possibly other body styles aswell, although I'm not sure. The silver tops and black tops are both 20v which came in later body styles, they have four throttle bodies and
where did you get that from? the AE86 was never offered with the supercharged 4A-GZE. in japan it was offered in the AE92 Trueno and Levin and the AW11 MR2. only the MR2 was offered with that motor here in the states.
stupid ritch kids that think their somthing they dont kno shit about cars wow u got a lambo soo what freking supra owns that piece of shit even a civic k20 swap w/ boost will whoop that exotic piece of crap.
why not convert your cooling system so as to not have external cross over pipes? also anyone who bashes a firewall or removes a heating system to install a 20v deserves a bashing themself.
seariously, aw11's are awsome but there engine compartment is so hard to work around. getting a st myself soon. carbing it just cuz i have them and i dont wanna change my setup. nice swap though keep us posted.
best 4age to work is not the silvertop or the blacktop but the redtop found on 1st gen mr2 and ae92,this is because they have more compresion than the blutop and a stronger block to take more punishment.
im stil looking forward for my blacktop swap, has lightest piston rods,im just aiming for 180 hp 9k rpm, why??well the stock 4age crankshaft snaps at 9.5k rpms, goodluck to buying a new crankshaft from formula atlantic (trd japan discontinued theirs)or even finding a used on ebay, they r rare.
RyukoTR u dong have to bang the firewall, u can either get coils for example from newer miatas if u can find one on the junkyard, or cut a hole in the firewall to clear the distributor.
macmacmacdre650, the 240hp 11k rpm 4age costs about 15k US dollars to build if u wanna purchase one from toysport (i think that is the company's name) already built, main reason is that the Formula Atlantic crankshaft that allows the 4age to rev up to 12k costs 5.5k US dollars i think.
lol dissapointed it wouldent go to 11k rpm stock? wtf u think toyota was trying to build a fucking race car or some shit for old people to hit 11k rpm? im 14 i bought my ae86 a few months back with my own money. it was broken but after i replaced its fuel pump and it fired right up. im about to get my open diff welded and i already gutted out everything but the front 2 seats and i only weigh 105 sometimes it makes me forget im running on a stock 16v bluetop lol.
im a bit disappointed i thought this engine pulled off 240hp n 11k rpm but now i see that u just need 2 out some TRD parts so it can have those requirements... is that right?
yeah, im using the stock distributor so i had to make space in the firewall.. if you dont want to hit it then you have to use coil packs... those are the stock velocity stack... they used to be pointing up....
this comments are getting WAY OFF! first of all, this is the real thing and not an initial d shit! this is a STOCK AE101 4AGE 20V SilverTop Engine that has custom wirings and map sensor setup with a BLACK TOP ECU. and can limit upto 8K rpm safely and has 160hp at the crank. the initial d one is the same engine BUT have TRD PARTS in it, and has 200something hp and can rev up to 12k rpm. sorry but, dont comment if your just going to talk about cartoons.
the clattering noise u speak of is the VVT activator.. or VVT OCV. The oil leaks from the mechanism and starts making that noise. Its very common. Only way to fix it is get a new VVT mechanism. If u dont change it.. ur only losing slight performance in the mid-range. nothing too serious.
can i please see pics of your car reving up to AT LEAST 11k RPM's? or a video? cuz the only way you could do it is either getting a formula atlantic series racing TRD 20v or tunning the computer...
ok, it cant go to 11k rpm becasue its a stock ae101 engine and not takushits trd engine... even if youhad a stand alon ecu you cant rev it up to 11k because its not safe.... and its stock
yeah it has vvt, but your digital trueno doesnt have vvt because it has vvt killer cams and camgears.. you know what it means?? ask your digital mechanic..

Hey man, I'm a 4age noob. and I have some questions. What is AFM? What is Higher compression? And how come it revs higher that the ST?
Timzsk8 3 years ago
AFM = Airflow Meter it measures the speed of the incoming air. The ECU then uses that information to calculate how much fuel to give the engine.
Compression ratio is hard to explain wikipedia it. But basically its how much the piston squishes the incoming air and fuel, before the spark plugs ignite it.
Higher compression = more power
Toyota gave the BT lighter rods and pistons, stiffer valvesprings, bigger ports, and bigger valves. All of that helps it rev higher than the ST
3star2nr 3 years ago
Silvertop CR = 10.5:1, Blacktop CR = 11.0:1
Both of these engines rev beautifully,
ST develops max power 118KW (160PS)@ 7,400 rpm.
BT develops max power 121KW (165PS)@ 7,800 rpm.
I have a BT in my AE82 (1988 Twin Cam Hatch) and this engine revs very freely and flies, I love it!

The cams are quite noisy, mine are as well...I guess just something normal on these engines?
TeHengaGreen 3 years ago
where can i buy that engine ??
the13joker 3 years ago
almost every jdm engine site has them for sale. awesome motors, ive owned a silvertop and a blacktop, both of which are very fun to drive on. lack of torque in the very bottom kinda sucks though.
tanhauserr 3 years ago
what kinda car do you have it for. i have a celica and was wondering if this engine will \fit???
crash60068 3 years ago
If you install the intake whats eliminated?the air filter?
nyko944 3 years ago
It's not an itake, it's ITB's... aka Individual Throttle Bodies. air filters are made to fit over those, if one so chooses, but are not required. but what was elimiated? the ITB plenum thingy, and the MAF (mass air flow) sensor, which was repalced with a MAP sensor (manifold air pressure)

hey i have the same SR5 im gonna drop in this motor what tranny are u using...is it the T50 or the stock transmission used on the stock
4AC motor...
burninggateway 4 years ago
I'm using the stock T-50 tranny, but its better if you use GT-S bellhousing so you can relocate the clutch fork.

the AE86 has a tiwn cam engine

Can somebody tell me the thing about silvertops, bluetops, redtops and 20V tops?
Cus the 20v tops wasn't originally fitted on these cars, right?
larshenrik91 4 years ago
ahahah Silvertop is the 20v bluetop is the stock 4age engine and redtop is the high comp ide call you and idiot but i asked that same question to my bro
xinsanepinoyx 4 years ago
the Blue top is the stock engine in the GT-S. The red top is a supercharged version out of an MR-2 i believe. the silver top is a 20V version out of the AE101 and the blacktop is also a 20v out of a AE111. The blue tops run about 112-130 HP depending on what exact model engine it is.
SidewaysEightSix 4 years ago
the aw11 mr2 used the big port blue top. the ae92 trueno/levin used the small port red top(higher compression, later models had no TVIS). the aw11 supercharged used the 4a-gze, which was a solid grey top.
sl1d3w4ysAE86 4 years ago
actually the different color tops only refer to a paint scheme. blue tops came first, they tended to have the big ports and such, then red tops, however both heads are 16v and more or less interchange. The 4AGEZ has a super-charger and came with both blue and red tops and was available in bot AE86 and AE92 MR2's and Corollas, possibly other body styles aswell, although I'm not sure. The silver tops and black tops are both 20v which came in later body styles, they have four throttle bodies and
Sniping101 4 years ago
where did you get that from? the AE86 was never offered with the supercharged 4A-GZE. in japan it was offered in the AE92 Trueno and Levin and the AW11 MR2. only the MR2 was offered with that motor here in the states.

how much is the hp in a stock 4age?
kostasss1986 4 years ago
my carolla is better. ae86 baby!
loscocorrocos 4 years ago
yeah def be careful of that clutch fan setup. Everyone's breaks at ~6500k rpm due to resonance.
But nice job sir.

hi I woudl be interested in what you think of my setup, search for "sams 20v sprinter" to find it

air filter?
jonas7473 4 years ago
quads dont neccesarely need filters although its better to have them on.. if he has filters they would be the slip on sock filter.
rsiconquest 4 years ago
sick filters can be suprisingly restrictive though.
Samqdf 4 years ago
just wondering why wouldnt it require filters?

morbidus1234: blacktop rods wont last long over 8500 revs
Samqdf 4 years ago
why not convert your cooling system so as to not have external cross over pipes? also anyone who bashes a firewall or removes a heating system to install a 20v deserves a bashing themself.

Runs super smooth!!! I want one for my AW11 (tight squeeze)... i wish i had an AE86 :'(
Worschdman 4 years ago
seariously, aw11's are awsome but there engine compartment is so hard to work around. getting a st myself soon. carbing it just cuz i have them and i dont wanna change my setup. nice swap though keep us posted.
bagdouche 4 years ago
best 4age to work is not the silvertop or the blacktop but the redtop found on 1st gen mr2 and ae92,this is because they have more compresion than the blutop and a stronger block to take more punishment.
im stil looking forward for my blacktop swap, has lightest piston rods,im just aiming for 180 hp 9k rpm, why??well the stock 4age crankshaft snaps at 9.5k rpms, goodluck to buying a new crankshaft from formula atlantic (trd japan discontinued theirs)or even finding a used on ebay, they r rare.
morbidus1234 4 years ago
the smallport red top had higher comp 1st gen aw11 and ae92 are bigports with lower compression
kimkamtwincam 4 years ago
RyukoTR u dong have to bang the firewall, u can either get coils for example from newer miatas if u can find one on the junkyard, or cut a hole in the firewall to clear the distributor.
macmacmacdre650, the 240hp 11k rpm 4age costs about 15k US dollars to build if u wanna purchase one from toysport (i think that is the company's name) already built, main reason is that the Formula Atlantic crankshaft that allows the 4age to rev up to 12k costs 5.5k US dollars i think.
morbidus1234 4 years ago
lol dissapointed it wouldent go to 11k rpm stock? wtf u think toyota was trying to build a fucking race car or some shit for old people to hit 11k rpm? im 14 i bought my ae86 a few months back with my own money. it was broken but after i replaced its fuel pump and it fired right up. im about to get my open diff welded and i already gutted out everything but the front 2 seats and i only weigh 105 sometimes it makes me forget im running on a stock 16v bluetop lol.
85rolla 4 years ago
im a bit disappointed i thought this engine pulled off 240hp n 11k rpm but now i see that u just need 2 out some TRD parts so it can have those requirements... is that right?
macmacmacdre650 4 years ago
yeah man dont lose u engine just for hit 11k RPM..
u have good dreams with this car grat!!!
shoko15 4 years ago
i wanna do this swap on my rolla soo bad, but i dont wanna bang the firewall. did u have to?
btw, i like how your itbs point down
RyukoTR 4 years ago
yeah, im using the stock distributor so i had to make space in the firewall.. if you dont want to hit it then you have to use coil packs... those are the stock velocity stack... they used to be pointing up....
pasingpogi 4 years ago
since you had to bang the firewall did you lose your clearance for your heatercore?

this comments are getting WAY OFF! first of all, this is the real thing and not an initial d shit! this is a STOCK AE101 4AGE 20V SilverTop Engine that has custom wirings and map sensor setup with a BLACK TOP ECU. and can limit upto 8K rpm safely and has 160hp at the crank. the initial d one is the same engine BUT have TRD PARTS in it, and has 200something hp and can rev up to 12k rpm. sorry but, dont comment if your just going to talk about cartoons.
pasingpogi 4 years ago
Someone here has watch too much initial-D (and its not the video poster).
By the way, nice swap.. sounds like my PB engine in idle :D

sweet motor, a bit dissapointed that it never got revd up!
nickernator 4 years ago
yes that clattering sound. its been driving me NUTS! thanks for the info guys. will talk to my mechanic
rvgr12 4 years ago
the clattering noise u speak of is the VVT activator.. or VVT OCV. The oil leaks from the mechanism and starts making that noise. Its very common. Only way to fix it is get a new VVT mechanism. If u dont change it.. ur only losing slight performance in the mid-range. nothing too serious.
Krishy123 4 years ago
sivertops dont have VVTi...
bazzathemammoth 4 years ago
Thats correct, they dont have VVTi.. they have VVT.. it is the the version without intelligence to automatically retard or enhance itself..
4age Silvertops and Blacktops both have VVT. Google it to research mate.
Krishy123 4 years ago
i think the silver top only has a VVT cause i have a 12,000 rpm 20 v 4A-GE Trueno and it is a Project D ver.
muzixlover 4 years ago
You mean you have a formula atlantic spec engine? huh?
kaidobattle2196 4 years ago
can i please see pics of your car reving up to AT LEAST 11k RPM's? or a video? cuz the only way you could do it is either getting a formula atlantic series racing TRD 20v or tunning the computer...
seph95 4 years ago
ok, it cant go to 11k rpm becasue its a stock ae101 engine and not takushits trd engine... even if youhad a stand alon ecu you cant rev it up to 11k because its not safe.... and its stock
pasingpogi 4 years ago
yeah it has vvt, but your digital trueno doesnt have vvt because it has vvt killer cams and camgears.. you know what it means?? ask your digital mechanic..
pasingpogi 4 years ago
i think ur wrong Silver top has a VVT and it is not a VVTi in 1985 it is a VVt before.
muzixlover 4 years ago
Wierd induction system you got going there... Is there an airbox that usually goes on there or does it just suck heat straight off the road?
You need to check your valvetrain clearances.
digitalpho3nix 4 years ago
hey mate i have a silvertop 20V too. Is it normal for them to make that clattering noise from the valvetrain? Mine does it alot too.
asquithygangsta 4 years ago
Check valve clearances. Otherwise try a different oil to quiten it up. Im keeping the clutch fan on mine.
