There is no set "best" finger to vibrato on. It all depends on what people are most comfortable with or what they themselves feel portrays the musicality the best in the moment.
@benjaros2 Aye, Rostropovich is a bit of an acquired taste sometimes (like so many cellists out there, for some reason :|), and i feel like he spurred on an entire generation who tries to vibrato like him XD
...and what's with that poor flutist. Terrible embouchure and a puny tone. Was the pricipal ill?
I love R's approach to this beautiful but very repetitive music. He doesn't milk every passage as Yo Yo Ma does. He lets it flow until the final big, heartbreaking climax.
So powerful it rocks the soul, so beautiful it hurts ... He always gave 200% but here it's more like 2000! His ending at 5:39 - 6.01 is phenomenal. Oh Wow - I love him - wonderful Slava, rocking on in Heaven!!!
Elfinsafety, you're brilliant, thank you! Please, please post the 1st and 2nd mvts too.
I'd say it's over 9000, but this guy really gave it his all. Sometimes he looks like he's going to pull a Leonard Bernstein, except with a cello instead of a conducting rod.
He was given an appalling time during his last few years in Russia. He would have been terribly upset during the year of his exile.He was so unique and amazing as a player. Hearing him at his very best, he moved me more than any other cellist.He was truly fantastic.
I don't really like this performance... the performance of Slava with London Philharmonic and Carlo Gulini is much nicer!... the flutist at 0:44 looks a bit scared of doing a mistake, doesn't she? :D
Great Cellost, Great Human Being. Rest in Peace.

The violin solo feels rushed to me.
It doesn't quite have thati intimate taste after all that lyrical reflection.
Berlin's recording with Karajan does a much better job, but this one is great as well.

@jwunschie14
Actually, it really depends on the cellist. I find my vibrato to be best on my third finger.

@wufufufu

He was the greatest cellist ever during his best playing years. When I heard him in those earlier years in London,he was a true cellist genius.
