im 21 and when i was 15 i developed a very dibilitating inferiority complex because i believed that becasue i was black, i was ugly and 2nd rate. I kept seeing and hearing how beautiful latinas, middle eastern, asian, hawaian, swedish women were (which they are), but nobody was saying how beautiful black women were, not even black men. but im over it. i know my black is beautiful!

I have self esteem issues myself and can relate to what your saying. I grew up being mistreated and it seems like thats just life for me. I'm so sick of it. My partner has been abusive towards me repeatedly, i try to be a good christian pray and forgive but it just keeps going on and on. Recently i've had to take a closer look at my baby fathers sexuality, realizing that he is starting fights with me just to run out the door to go hang out with other males. It breaks my heart to realize whats been going on, but now i dont have to blame myself anymore. He twists things around to manipulate me and i am thankful to God to let me see the situation for what it really is. The problem is one he has with himself. Tonya, I am a young black woman from Trinidad and Tobago. As you know, we also have this problem in the Caribbean. The highest rate of infection is within the 15-24 female cohort. It's a scary reality. The information is available. Everywhere you turn, there is a message telling ppl to protect themselves, warning them about the dangers of HIV. Yet the figures keep rising. It makes me so depressed sometimes.
Maybe I misheard, but she didn't mention the sharing of heroine needles as another way of spreading the disease. Perhaps this is a dated example of unsafe commingling of fluids but I think it applies when one considers the socioeconomic ties to this kind of disease. Its born of lack of information, drugs, poverty, unprotected sex and sometimes even stupidity.

Poor self esteem and lack of hope are probably reasons why many young people in the black community are not putting forth enough effort to keep themselves safe from HIV.
But there are some other reasons. A professor at the University of Chicago found that black youth often do not believe or trust public education campaigns that instruct on what to do to avoid HIV, because they think these campaigns are racist and are criticizing black people specifically (which they are not.)

im 21 and when i was 15 i developed a very dibilitating inferiority complex because i believed that becasue i was black, i was ugly and 2nd rate. I kept seeing and hearing how beautiful latinas, middle eastern, asian, hawaian, swedish women were (which they are), but nobody was saying how beautiful black women were, not even black men. but im over it. i know my black is beautiful!

Parents of minority children must see the connection and fill in the gap....my sister has two beautiful daughters (20 yrs and 16 yrs -black) and they are sooo confident and convinced. I have self esteem issues myself and can relate to what your saying. I grew up being mistreated and it seems like thats just life for me. I'm so sick of it. My partner has been abusive towards me repeatedly, i try to be a good christian pray and forgive but it just keeps going on and on. Recently i've had to take a closer look at my baby fathers sexuality, realizing that he is starting fights with me just to run out the door to go hang out with other males. I pray i dont get AIDS from him.

It breaks my heart to realize whats been going on, but now i dont have to blame myself anymore. There are so many wounded young women and older women who never seek the mental and physical medical attention they need. Especially for those of us who are poor and live in communities where ppl are down on their luck. Women need to refocus their lives. Take a chance on going back to school. Tonya, I am a young black woman from Trinidad and Tobago. As you know, we also have this problem in the Caribbean. The highest rate of infection is within the 15-24 female cohort. It's a scary reality. The information is available. Everywhere you turn, there is a message telling ppl to protect themselves, warning them about the dangers of HIV. Yet the figures keep rising. It makes me so depressed sometimes.

I know a 22 yr. old who has HPV & she got it from her live in boyfriend. Tonya I love you, thank you for telling it like it is. Someone out there needs to hear this message including myself we need to keep it together. Personally I don't let esteem issues bring me down but I know for others it's a huge problem. People will never learn things if they don't believe in it so it starts inside. Please people be smart about things know that you are worth it and strap up. Remember every person you sleep with have the chance to become your baby's father/mother.

I know u focus more on women bc we are the ones talking the most 2 u. I really wish the men who feel upset would just take the msg about staying healthy & alive. Both women & men can b abusive but women get the most. As humans we need to act humane towards eachother protect your life, love your life there is only one we know about....

I BEG TO DIFFER. The only reason it SEEMS as if women suffer more from abuse is because "most" men do not call the police or talk to friends and relatives about the situation. Men are taught from a very young age to just suck it up, never show weakness. A man that comes forward about abuse is considered weak by women and other males consider him a "Bi**h". Its a lose/lose for a man to come out about abuse. Women who are victims get labeled just that, a victim, not the case for men. A Mans view

Plus it's the attitude that no matter how bad it is a woman always has it worse.
Think about the violence and atrocities that men in all societies thruout history have endured. Think about the hardships that children have also had to endure. It seems we only choose to remember what happens to women.
Also, abuse is not considered abuse by a lot of people unless it happens to women. It's not that women have it worse it's that it's worse because women are the ones suffering it.

No one disagrees that men have "endured" atrocities throughout history, but women have "endured" much more, and both men AND women are about 99.9% of the time enduring these "atrocities" at the hands of MEN.
So you can thank testosterone for putting both men AND women through hell in the history of the world.

AWESOME! This is the kind of sex ed. that should be at schools not that text book crap that is in handbooks that kids never listen too--teens etc need straight talk with no sugar coating.

Yourself. There is a saying that stayed with me and it says to remove anything in your life that does not make a deposit but a withdrawal. I hate to bring this up but Sistas these men are on the Down low whether you want to believe it or not. The guys he is hanging with may just be his lover so open your eyes. As a man who is very serious about wearing a condom, but I have had many women who wanted me to have unprotected sex with them with the key words "I am clean". Tonya it has nothing to do with self esteem and has everything to do with being responsible. I wear a condom to protect against Pregnancy and STD's. And about the women who tried to convince me of having unprotected sex, I said no and I no longer gave them the time of day. I think that you beat up and blame the men a bit too much.Peace

Men get blamed for everyone's problems whether they be men's problems or women's problems or both.
Women are never to blame for anyone's problems.
To me this is too black and white so I usually listen to what women say and feminist minded people with a grain of salt.
I take the true statements out of it and don't go along with the rest of it. Men have always been to blame whether they are at fault or not.

popadibs, if you would have listened longer you would have heard her say that no women has the right to put her hands on a man either. but the reason why it's more focused on women is because statistically more women are contracting hiv than men right now. mostly between the ages of 15 to 25. i presently have a 39 year old friend dying from it right now.

Abuse and hiv are not mutually exclusive issues. Why imply what you haven't confirmed? You don't know how much of this video I've actually listened to and it is irrelevant to any discussion.

what the heck are you talking about? hiv and abuse ARE indeed mutually exclusive subjects! if you want to get technical. most women and men contract hiv through some sort of abuse. weather it be sexual abuse (promiscuity), physical abuse(rape) or drug abuse(intrevenous drug use). and the fact that you didn't watch the whole vid dosen't matter. because you still felt it was nessesary to comment. also, popadibs. if i imply it, you better believe i have PERSONALLY confirmed it! Whether or not I did watch the entire video has no merit to your claims.
In order for hiv and abuse to be mutually exclusive one would have to occur every time for the other to occur. Based on your logic if a woman can't be abused unless she has HIV. So if a man contracts HIV has he been abused?
Unless you've hacked into my computer you can't personally confirm how much of this video I have watched. You've only confirmed that you speak a lot about things you know little about. Good night

first of all popadibs, i do not understand your comment. second of all, i did not say i knew how much of the video you watched. i don't care. like i said in my comment, IT DOSEN'T MATTER! you still felt it was nessesary to comment. did you not? also, also, to answer your question, if a man contracts hiv, it is MOST LIKELY because he has either been the victim of an abusive immoral women, or he himself engages in promiscuous sex (which is a behavioral form of abusing the right to have sex).

The problem with our species is that we focus more on "who's right" than "what's right" and at the end of the day it really does not matter "who's right" because people are still dying from the disease, are they not? and that isn't right regardless of "who's right" in these back and forths.
At the end of the day we've contributed nothing to humanity by being right in an argument.
