@battenfelder I like both, but I still perfer Dragon Ball. I mean, was it really necessary to throw away such core characters of DB in DBZ? I miss Roshi's awesomeness. It would've been cool if Yamcha, Krillin, Tien and Chaotzu all stayed somewhere near the same power, I mean the 5 were like an awesome team in Dragon Ball. In DBZ it's all about Goku and Vegeta's families. :/ Still a great anime though.

@battenfelder I like both too but Dragon Ball Z completely overshadows Dragon Ball in popularity (especially in the west). I knew a lot of people who didn't even bother to watch Dragon Ball because they were introduced to the series on Toonami and thought it was just a "Pup Named Scooby Doo" version of DBZ, not knowing or caring that it was actually made first. Hell, go type in "Dragon Ball" on ANY search and see how may results for the original series you get!

Dragonball and Dragonball Z were very different. Dragonball was a fantasy adventure with some fighting here and there. Dragonball Z was very sci-fi with boosted fighting. I believe both are good series which appeal to different people. (Me personally, I perfer the original.)

Actually, even though I very-very love DBZ, the original Dragon Ball is just better. Fights were actually more interesting, no 7 hour-lasting power ups and beam attacks all the time, it was focused more on martial arts and the characters were almost on the same level, no one was ridiculously strong. Stories were fun: more humor was intended and the original DB team was just more lifeful than the Z fighters later.

I think they should make a new dragon ball show after dragon ball z kai (i'm not saying kai sucks, i love it). At the end of GT Pan's grandsons, Goku jr. and Vegeta jr. fight so the show should be like dragon ball. Goku jr. can be kid goku but can turn super saiyan and Vegeta jr. the same. The show can be on the FUNimation channel or nicktoons.

I think this was for teens. In Japan, things weren't as strict as in USA or Canada. That's why you would see breasts and penises in some anime. Like this for example. Like in Kai some stuff that was uncensored in Japanese is censored nowadays.

When I watched Dragon ball, I was always curious why Goku have a tail or Piccolo being gree and speaking some type of alien language with kami(during the world tournament), but after watching Dbz it answered all my questions, but watching dragon ball still made my childhood the best. It's weird how this show expanded from A kid trying to win the world tournament to a show about a batshit powerful man saving the universe on many occasions. I think one of my favorite thing about Dragonball (and as a result DBZ) is that they never explained where the Dragonballs came from or how they came to be. It lends a sense of mystery to the series and doesn't allow itself to get bogged down by unnecessarily clunky or expository origin stories.

The Dragonballs are magic, in a magic, fun and exciting world, and that's all we need to know, and indeed, ever do know.
