Nice video, great underwater footage! I have 2 Mexican Pangas and we leave from Punta Lobos, Todos Santos, Baja Cal. Sur. The dangers do exist but staying at a distance will always give you the better photos/movies. We have had many whales approach our boat(motor off) and come along side where my guests and I have had the life time experience of touching them before swimming away. After the "touch and tell" they often breach, my belief is because they can and they feel no threat from us.
Woah, meeting a mother and her calf might be dangerous, since I hear that mommy whales are really, really defensive when pregnant. Not so sure when the baby's already out, though :P
Tonga is far far away from my country " Kuwait " I was watching matt's video around the world and I dremaed that I travelled to tONGA i think I will make it tru.... one day :)
I read a while back that Tonga said, the first Tiger Shark attack on the Whale watchers and they would shut the snorkeling Whale tourist industry down. There was one close call a while back...
Wooooow, you're so lucky to finally get to see one! I've only seen the tops of them (in Fiji) and as soon as I got in the water, off they went! I'd love to swim with a whale!!! Thanks for sharing this!
Belugas are very curious and playful. I've seen a lot in kayak, many times. Following us, even playing with the rudder. One of my dad's client said one followed him on 24 kms !
You haven't been to as many places in the same time he has. And with his sponsor, he'll soon have been to more places than however much you say you have went to.
"The front area from the waist to the knees of a seated person."
Well that was fairly concise, now we need to know if whales can use seats... which may in turn lead to knowing if they have access to desks! We may be on to something!
Animals are always very defensive if there is a calf of them included, i guess. Especially mother animals. It's a shame - no Matt underwater-dancing with an whale. :(
NEW TONGAN KING better becarefull messing with china and japan because all they want to do is take over our islands to turn into a tourist attraction for themselves to make money. The tongans people need to stand up to the chinese and other asians and run those fuckers out of the island or else there will be no tonga in the future!!
Man, I don't think I could ever do it. I have such an irrational fear of both the open ocean and extremely large animals--even when they're gentle ones. More power to ya, man.
aww too bad u didnt make it into the water in time. what if he ate you?> do whales ever in the history eat men? like even on accident like it was scooping up some krill and opps! that was a man. do you think it would spit the man back out? lol any way beautiful video!
lol killer whales maybe...but i think whales that scoop up krill don't have a big enough opening to swallow a man. they got those millions of hair like things for filtering out non-krill stuff.
Whales in general don't attack humans. And your right, baleen whales, the large ones that eat krill, usually don't have throat openings large enough to swallow more than a big melon. I have in fact heard of a humpback whale accidentally closing it's mouth on a bird. The whale opened up it's mouth again and the bird flew out perfectly unharmed.
You have to obviously get in the water extremely quickly. not wait around for a minute. "Get ready when i say..." --5 min later--- "the moment we get in the water...'
