I was raised Russian Molokan in a church located in Los Angeles, California. Listening to this video brings back precious memories of my parents and grandparents who had the most beautiful voices. No musical instruments, just their glorious voices raised in praises to our Lord God thanking Him for bringing them to America and away from the terrors of the early 1900 Russian government. I don't know how to spell this in Russian so I will write it phonetically, "Dybok vom!" Bless you!
One more comment...these people singing are not not dressed as the Molokans do. Who are they? What religion are they? It's not the clothes, they are beautiful, but not dressed in the traditional Molokan dress. That's all...
this ensemble sings not only songs of molokans on their concert.
"Folklore Ensemble "Russian Music" was founded in 1995, participants in the three folk groups in Moscow: "The People's Holiday", "Cossack circle", "Carousel". The purpose of this association has been changing the perception of stereotypes of ethnic music, as the area of pure entertainment, "low", only to serve the mass celebrations and parade..."
So beautiful. So full of spirit! I remember this song at the various Molokan churches in Southern California. This particular song, as well as many others, evoked the holy spirit that many people raised their hands and/or jumped in splendid glory! I miss it, so I'm so happy to get a bit here on YouTube. Thanks for sharing! Brings it all back home.
2. As one of the singers of Sotrudniki Veri I cannot totally agree that it originates from Cotton Fields. The former has quite an original harmonic structure of its own, as well as its rhythmical line. Besides the former is quite sophisticated from the vocal point of view. So I personally do not see direct link between the two and consider each of them independent and original. If there are other opinions it would be interesting to discuss them in more detail
The song "O Sotrudniki Veri" was composed by a Molokan Jumper/Maximist named V.V Prohoroff in the early 1970's. Cotton fields has nothing to do with it.
1. The question about the origin of Sotrudniki Veri melody was touched several times in the comments, and reference was made to the American Negro spiritual folk song: "Cotton Fields" by Lead Belly. Its tune is well known and wide-spread (even in the USSR after world war II Leonid Utiosovs Jazz Band played a popular song with a very similar tune). Apparently the situation in the US is alike.
Many thanks to all the viewers for the great attention to our video and to the program of our concert which was prepared specially for the international scientific conference of ethnomusicologists. We hope that soon the video of the whole concert will be available to us, and we will place the songs of your interest in YouTube. At present our ensemble Russkaya Muzyka is preparing a CD devoted to Folk Christianity which will also include the unique music of Molokans and Dukhobors.
Dear friends, we the members of the Russkaya Muzyka ensemble thank you for your interest in this video. This is a small part of our program at a concert in the Russian Academy of Music (Moscow) on October 29, 2008, devoted to the opening of the International scientific conference Traditional Musical Cultures on the Borderline of the Centuries. The video recording was made by our friends IZBA Records.
Composer for No.9 "BROTHERS IN FAITH psalm of the Molokans, Stavropol region." is American Maksimist Vas. Vas. Prohoroff. Melody may be from American Negro spiritual: "Cotton Fields" by Lead Belly.
Was this performance at the GNESSIN Russian Academy of Music, Moscow?
And was it part of Форум «Живая традиция» в Москве с 1 по 5 ноября 2008 года?
You seem to be very well informed about the Folk Forum which took place in Moscow on November 1-5, 2008. No, our concert was not part of Live Tradition. It was part of the international scientific conference of Ethnomusicologists "Traditional Musical Cultures on the Borderline of the Centuries", October 29-November 1, organized by the Russian Academy of Music. And yes, you are right, it is the concert hall of Gnessiny Academy of Music.
Международная научная конференция «Традиционные музыкальные культуры на рубеже столетий: проблемы, методы, перспективы исследования», которая состоится 2629 октября 2008 г. в РАМ им. Гнесиных.
The tune for О сотрудник is nothing close to the tune for "Cotton Fields". I knew Dz Vasily personaly, and he never even listened to American music (due to his religiouse beliefs), let alone take there tunes.
The Russkaya Muzyka ensemble exists in Moscow since 1996 and our programs are mainly based on our recordings and recordings of other ethnomusicologists during folk expeditions.
Note that the UMCA-Hacienda Heights normally refuses to sell by mail. To protect the spiritual assets of the Maksimists from wide distribution among the worldly non-believers, they usually insist you visit the library-bookstore in person during their limited hours on Sunday morning 9-10 am. and a few other times, like during the annual picnic.
Authentic. Repetitive, but, according to my Russian neighbor, usually performed by a choir of at leas 600 voices. I like it, but I also like minimalist music and Willie Nelson.
Thank you very much for your interest in our singing. Our ensemble Russkaya Muzyka released our last CD with traditional folk songs 2 years ago in Russia. Soon a CD with traditional songs of Southern Russia will be released in Europe, and at present we are preparing a CD devoted to Folk Christianity. As soon as it is ready we will announce it.

О, сотрудниках веры, вы спойте все сердечно,
Как любовью Христовой, открыто всем нам.
Припев:
Соберёмся друзья вместе, запоём мы громко песню;
Про отцов и дедов, и всех наставников в вере нашей.
Получивши с небес, Духом силы и с торжеством;
Пойте песнью Моисея, и песнь Агнеца.

Where can I hear more of your songs like this one? It was just beautiful.

Spacibo Ivan:
Could you please also post videos for No.7, No.8, and No.10?
Molokans, especially Maksimists, would like to see No.10. Doukhobors would like to see No.7 and No.8
If you made a CD of only Molokan-Maksimist singing, many in the US and Australia would buy it.
Composer for No.7 is American Maksimist Vas. Vas. Prohoroff. Melody may be from American Negro spiritual: "Cotton Fields" by Lead Belly.
AJConovaloff 3 years ago
Dear Mr. AJConovaloff,
In the last sentence of your comment did you actually mean No.10 instead of No.7? Since No.7 (Doves) refers to the music of Dukhobors.
Thank you for your interest in our program.

I don't know 'izba records' but if you are interested in Russian folk song recordings, try contacting the United Molokan Christian Association:
U.M.C.A. Library
P.O. Box 5790
Hacienda Heights, CA 91745-5790
They may have some CDs, or may point you in the right direction to find some.
