I remember the first transmission of this in 1975 - doing my A levels, full of anxiety. It was so unexpected that evening on telly - and just so very funny. Thanks for posting, Jimmy - a truly great artist. Wonderful to see Bob Harris. OGWT was part of our lives then.

"...and have me a BLEEP-ing good time" is what's on the album. Is that bleep on all pressings is what I was wondering, or is there a bleep-free version with the f-word on it? Hey Neil what's that with this "fantastic time" nonsence?
@Bietel The Japanese CD release of "Rutland Weekend Songbook" includes, as a bonus, an uncensored Protest Song. Not to mention, I *think* he sings it uncensored on a Python live album.
You are so rite Stacksofvids12! Total & utter talentless little gobshites!I wish all the Lily Allens & Pete Dochertys of this world would just disappear right up their collective left wing arse hole.Just one glance at the NME will prove your point; it has all been done before. The hair, the chords, the vocal intonation, the guitar smashing, the sneer.Oh for the love of God can this man not re-form himself and save us from Amy Winehouse hell! What happened to humour? They'r all so fuking rite on
Niel Innes is a musical and comic genius, it is a crime that the Innes book of records is not out on DVD. Name one modern "star" that has even a glimmer of Innes talent, they are all plagiarists and shallow assholes
And "The Secret Policeman's Ball" where I first heard it! Brilliant Bob Dylan send-up! Particularly the single note played on the harmonica! Probably an audio test pattern parody. Genius!!!
The guy at the beginning is Bob Harris from the iconic 1970's UK TV music show 'The Old Grey Whistle Test.' So this spoof includes that reference - obviously with the blessing of Bob Harris.
Watching this(& seeing Neil on his 2006 solo tour)reminds me that for all my love & respect for Viv S.'s brilliance as a performer & musical creator, the Beast of the Bonzos was brilliance x's 2...+ wackiness x's 6, of course.
I have been looking at and enjoying utube for about a year now and it is guys like you who make it possible, so cheers!
I was actually in tears at the end of the session. It is quite deep humour with several hidden levels, which I think, sadly, many people would miss if they hadn't been there once upon a time.
I have been looking for song this since I was 17 years old when I first heard it on rutland TV. FOUND IT .....YES. ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC.. SO FUNNY. The first time I heard it on TV my boyfriend & I belly laughed together, it was ace.
What I find so interesting about Neil Innes' stuff is that he's not a comedian but that he's a warped mirror. He's a fine musician and gifted lyricist, but his "parodies" aren't so much "funny" as "true".
Neil Innes was never a member of Monty Python. He was a member of the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, which played on "Do Not Adjust Your Set", which also included Eric Idle, Michael Palin, and Terry Jones. Neil often toured with Python, providing musical interludes to cover costume and scenery changes during the live shows. And he was occasionally on stage. But there were only 6 Pythons.
But, he was the guy who sang to "Sir Robin" in "The Holy Grail", right? I love him. He's a genius. "I suffer for my music, and now it's your turn". Love it.
"I may be accused of being confused, but I'm average weight for my height, my philosophy like color tv, is all there in black and white..."-lol! Idle and Innes were gold.
Hilarious and dead-on parody of Dylan (even though I like Dylan)..but boy did he make my ears suffer with that deliberately bad harmonica squeal...Yowch!
For a better rendition, listen to the Monty Python "Live at City Center" album. The off key harmonica work will make you want to crawl up into a ball.
As the owner of three dusty, rarely-played Dylan albums, I can say with confidence that this is what I hear when they are occasionaly removed from their sleeves and placed on the platter.
Check out my song 80s baby ppl!
