Amy Winehouse doing THIS song??? Obviously still high!!
This is one of the best rock tunes ever written, and by a superb all around artist. From my viewpoint, if Eric Clapton wants to jam with you, you are the man!!!
i was working in an envelope factory .Things were bad with my old lady and one day i went to work and there was a girl there as an operator i was gob smacked
There's actually another version of this video (the 1987 remake)................it includes a lot of animation...........anyone know what I'm talking about?
this song was about a girl he dated about nine or ten years before he did this song and she broke his heart by dating a Jewish guy from NZ and that same bloke was a record executive from Steve Winwood's record company and he truly loved Valerie more than anybody.
this dude had a long and successfule carrer from the mid 60's to the early 90's. With a great voice like that why don't we hear anything about him anymore... its a shame.
@JisNUMEROuno. Steve Winwood is actually going to be doing a tour with Eric Clapton in 2010-11 I believe. "Clapton-Winwood Live at MSG" CD/DVD came out not too long ago. I'd recommend it to anyone
@MrKnopf Well, actualy it was written by The Zutons in 2006. Mark Ronson really wanted Amy Winehouse to sing the song for their album Version, which is an album with only covers of other songs. So it wasn't Amy Winehouse at all who "blemished" the song title... Eventhough I like this song, and Steve Winwood (have seen him life several times already), I actualy like that song too, and it's really cool to play in a band:)
it was actually re released later in the 80's with a better sound and reached the top 10....this was after he had a couple other big hits, so his name was more out there.....so it got its just rewards on the charts..
Top song from a top class muso. Why it only got to 70 or so on the US billboard chart defies me./ But then that was the US charts, here in NZ and Aussie it did very well.. Go figure?
It is apparent that the 1987 "Valerie" was not just remixed but also has new rerecorded vocals. The differences are most prominent in the second verse,. The line "I'm the same boy that I used be" is different if you listen closely and Winwoood pronouces "Valerie" differently, with the original having all three syllables distinct and the hit single version having the emphasis on the last syllable (the long E).
This video looks like it was filmed around 1982. His videos for Freedom Overspill and Higher Love are around '86 or '87 - so this is clearly earlier. And geekier. But I love Steve.
Wow, I had no idea this was remixed in 1987- The changes are really quite minimal (the original can be found here on Youtube as well). This version sounds like it was just mixed a bit better (a little smoother all around).
His voice is very unique. I like it. I had a boss once who was the image of him!!! Couldn't sing like him though unfortunately!! Dose anyone else think he sounds like Mr Mister's Richard Page a little???
I like both the 1982 and 1987 versions equally in their own ways. Both seem to represent their respective period with the '82 version having a late 70s/early 80s character (slight disco feel) to it, while the '87 version is more in line with the late 80s in sound.
Valerie was first released in 1982 on Winwood's album "Talking Back To The Night", it was remixed and released again in 1987 for the album "Chronicles." The remixed version indeed has a fuller sound especially the keyboards.
I don't understand why there are 2 versions of this song. The first one sounds less full instrument-wise...that's a nice way to say it sucks. But this one is MUCH better a hundred times! It's more lively! Can anybody tell me the story behind both versions?
I also think the 2nd version had a slightly more sophisticated video with more graphics. Though I've seen the only ones on YouTube consist of the original video that went with the 1982 version.
Julieann, don't get me wrong, I really loved the eric prydz take. But why do you think prydz chose this song to sample in the first place?! Answer: 'cause it's such a classic tune. Winwood wins every time.
hes been around a long time, with traffic and spencer davis group to name a few.a naturally talented guy and apparently hes pretty good live.love the album arc of a diver.
Jesus Christ, youtube. At least put THE RIGHT VERSION with THE RIGHT SONG. "Valerie" (this remix) was a re-release; there was a version from 1982 and a version from 1987 (the one you're hearing right now).
I've been exposed to a lot of music in my lifetime, but I can say without hesitation that this is my most favorite, favorite song of all time. It's a shame Steve never does it in concert anymore. A shame. But he's one of the finest musicians there is. See him live if you ever get a chance.
