  • The 87 version with the 82 video fits perfectly. VH1 should've done that. :)

  • This song makes me LOVE that my name is VALERIE!!!! :)

  • i was named after this song

  • love this song... love s.w. we go way back..

  • Am I the only French guy who ever loved this singer ? great stuff!

  • The hits keep comin'. Here's a jazzy number from Steve Winwood!

  • I had a head of hair like that in the 80s. Farewell old friend.

  • He's the Mozart of the pop music

  • this song isnt my stlye, but the title is my name so i had to hear it. :)

  • Amy Winehouse doing THIS song??? Obviously still high!!

This is one of the best rock tunes ever written, and by a superb all around artist. From my viewpoint, if Eric Clapton wants to jam with you, you are the man!!!

  • Wrong fucking video.

  • THis is where call on me came from!?! No wonder its so repetitive. I must say I prefer this to call on me.

  • Of course i love this song because my name is Valerie :)

  • @vjamison1 Is that the only reason?

  • @vjamison1 me too! rock on other person named Val!

  • They don't make 'em like that anymore......

  • brings back memories

  • Best part 2:43 to 3:08

  • lol,He does look like Conan O`Brien.

  • Lmao @ nyyankfan..you are so right

  • this song makes me wish my name was valerie...i think steve winwood is one of the most under-rated rockers...this song is perfect,,

  • one of the best 80s song,

  • @Nyyankfan. Not at all! He does look like Conan!

  • i was working in an envelope factory .Things were bad with my old lady and one day i went to work and there was a girl there as an operator i was gob smacked

she was the mosy beautiful woman i ever seen

  • @gr8cutter ,,was her name valerie??

  • @gr8cutter Please tell us her name was Valerie. Otherwise your little story is entirely irrelevant.

  • Strong song! Great.

  • There's actually another version of this video (the 1987 remake)................it includes a lot of animation...........anyone know what I'm talking about?

  • I Like Eric Prydze vid would there nowt like the original Go Stevie

  • Amazing how different videos were back then. This one probably took all morning to shoot, and then they were done.

  • Loodiros prefers the "original" version!!!

    hahahahaha

  • am I the only one who thinks Steve Winwood has an uncanny resemblance to Conan O'Brien?

  • @nyyankfan He does! They've had Andy do music videos - would be hilarious to see Conan in this.

  • @nyyankfan LOL true, same big ass Irish head.

  • LOL

  • @nyyankfan

No you are not the only one...I can see the resemblance although Conan is stockier in the face...

  • @nyyankfan He's the love child of Conan and Willem Dafoe.

  • @nyyankfan... ShadowGunner82 agrees with you in the comment section of another upload of this video.

  • @nyyankfan Yea, he kinda does

  • @nyyankfan hahaha definitely!

  • @nyyankfan - very true...probably a better singer. lol Love the name Valerie.

  • @nyyankfan

Or rather, the ever so "dated Conan" resembles the classic Steve Winwood?

  • @nyyankfan

Steve Winwood has bigger hair ;-)

  • The eric prydyz version sucks. This is the best arrangement available.

  • totally agree

  • I prefer the eric plydyz but this one is pretty good.

  • i certainly like eric prydyz video much better.

  • this song was about a girl he dated about nine or ten years before he did this song and she broke his heart by dating a Jewish guy from NZ and that same bloke was a record executive from Steve Winwood's record company and he truly loved Valerie more than anybody.

  • I wonder how she felt after Steve came out with this song? If she's a halfways decent person, she should have felt like garbage.

  • @palebeachbum she probably was humbled and in total shock and awe.

  • this dude had a long and successfule carrer from the mid 60's to the early 90's. With a great voice like that why don't we hear anything about him anymore... its a shame.

  • @JisNUMEROuno. Steve Winwood is actually going to be doing a tour with Eric Clapton in 2010-11 I believe. "Clapton-Winwood Live at MSG" CD/DVD came out not too long ago. I'd recommend it to anyone

  • Classic song from the 80s :)

  • Fabulous stuff. And what about that hair. Different class.

  • If I should name one BEST SONG OF ALL TIMES, it would be that version of Winwood's ,,Valerie".

,,Winwood" is one of few songs who deserve to be described as (nearly) perfect - it's AWESOME!

His voice, the song's flow... It is sooo smooth, so... Gliding!

Shame on Amy Winehouse for blemishing that song title.

  • +1 on the Winehouse comment. She blemishes everything she touches though.

  • @MrKnopf I'm with you on this one!!

(she should change her name to Amy Shithouse!)

  • @MrKnopf Blame it on The Zutons, not Winehouse.

  • @MrKnopf Well, actualy it was written by The Zutons in 2006. Mark Ronson really wanted Amy Winehouse to sing the song for their album Version, which is an album with only covers of other songs. So it wasn't Amy Winehouse at all who "blemished" the song title... Eventhough I like this song, and Steve Winwood (have seen him life several times already), I actualy like that song too, and it's really cool to play in a band:)

  • I keep looking for Andy Richter in this video.

  • it was actually re released later in the 80's with a better sound and reached the top 10....this was after he had a couple other big hits, so his name was more out there.....so it got its just rewards on the charts..

  • Top song from a top class muso. Why it only got to 70 or so on the US billboard chart defies me./ But then that was the US charts, here in NZ and Aussie it did very well.. Go figure?

  • I'm shocked it didn't make top 40 in usa - we have better taste!

  • Sing It Steve!

  • hahah brilliant!

  • This song is fucking Incredible!!

  • Not as incredible as "Plenty Lovin" with Des'ree. That one's my favorite Windwood song AND duet. Tell me what you think......

  • This owns Eric Prydz shitty remake. Music doesn't need acres of flesh to be good music and this video proves that!

  • steve winwood did the remake with eric prydz retard

  • ok then Mister know-it-all

  • Its MISS know it all to you

  • That is some hair Steve!

  • hahaha!! call on meeee! call on me!

  • Ah, you have to love the 80's!

  • BILLBOARD TOP 100 1988 !!!!!!

  • i take that back, your correct ,it reached #51 in 82 and #19 in1987 according to complete uk singles charts book.

  • released in 1982 and hitting the dizzy heights at #9.taken from talking back to the night.

  • No, the 1982 version barely hit the top 100 at only #70. The 1987 version went top ten.

  • It is apparent that the 1987 "Valerie" was not just remixed but also has new rerecorded vocals. The differences are most prominent in the second verse,. The line "I'm the same boy that I used be" is different if you listen closely and Winwoood pronouces "Valerie" differently, with the original having all three syllables distinct and the hit single version having the emphasis on the last syllable (the long E).

  • This video looks like it was filmed around 1982. His videos for Freedom Overspill and Higher Love are around '86 or '87 - so this is clearly earlier. And geekier. But I love Steve.

  • Wow, I had no idea this was remixed in 1987- The changes are really quite minimal (the original can be found here on Youtube as well). This version sounds like it was just mixed a bit better (a little smoother all around).

  • For a long time i thought it was phil collins singing.

  • how dare you lol not nearly as good but still good

  • His voice is very unique. I like it. I had a boss once who was the image of him!!! Couldn't sing like him though unfortunately!! Dose anyone else think he sounds like Mr Mister's Richard Page a little???

  • Oh Yea and he looks like him somewhat too!

  • is this the 1987 version?

  • Yes

  • Yes. The better version in my opinion.

  • sweet song... I remember hearing this song at a hockey game when team USA was playing canada back in the 80's..

  • It's Randal from Clerks! Cool!

    (j/k - great song)

  • THE BEST OF THE BEST !!!!!!

  • that eric whatshisname ripped this song so hard.

  • steve winwood actually re-recorded the vocals for that track, so not exactly a "rip"....

  • I like both the 1982 and 1987 versions equally in their own ways. Both seem to represent their respective period with the '82 version having a late 70s/early 80s character (slight disco feel) to it, while the '87 version is more in line with the late 80s in sound.

  • This is the best! Go steve!

  • He has Conan O'Brien hair!

  • LOL Yes he sure does doesn't he!!

  • Valerie was first released in 1982 on Winwood's album "Talking Back To The Night", it was remixed and released again in 1987 for the album "Chronicles." The remixed version indeed has a fuller sound especially the keyboards.

  • I like this music video better, but the newer song version better....If that makes sense

  • The first was the original release, then they re-released a more fuller sounding version!

  • i was so excited to find out where eric prydz got his material...and i love this song even more then call on me!

  • I don't understand why there are 2 versions of this song. The first one sounds less full instrument-wise...that's a nice way to say it sucks. But this one is MUCH better a hundred times! It's more lively! Can anybody tell me the story behind both versions?

  • I also think the 2nd version had a slightly more sophisticated video with more graphics. Though I've seen the only ones on YouTube consist of the original video that went with the 1982 version.

  • The 2004 version was created by Thomas Bangalter (Daft Punk) and DJ Falcon; Eric Prydz produced it.

  • yeah, and eric pridz worked with steve winwood

  • This remix is far better than the version he previously released in 1982. Thanks for posting this!

  • Another Great British Artist, original member of the Spencer Davis Group!

  • This is classic

  • amen!

  • yeah this is my name. but i called steve and he didnt show up.

  • LOL!!! Thanks, you saved me a dime. :)

  • Julieann, don't get me wrong, I really loved the eric prydz take. But why do you think prydz chose this song to sample in the first place?! Answer: 'cause it's such a classic tune. Winwood wins every time.

  • He kind of looks like Conan O'Brien in this video.

  • xfd he so DOES!

  • Wonderful song...named my daughter after this gem!!!!!!!!

  • Man this song owns so hard. Valerieeeee...? It's the same dick it used to be.

  • okay I will admit, that made me lol.

  • Muy linda cancion!!!!!! Me trae muchos recuerdos!!!! =)

  • This isn't even the right video.

  • hes been around a long time, with traffic and spencer davis group to name a few.a naturally talented guy and apparently hes pretty good live.love the album arc of a diver.

  • what a piece of song! oMG! a mytic song!

  • I agree opinions are just like assholes...everybody's got one

  • The man is a genius.

  • Jesus Christ, youtube. At least put THE RIGHT VERSION with THE RIGHT SONG. "Valerie" (this remix) was a re-release; there was a version from 1982 and a version from 1987 (the one you're hearing right now).

I've been exposed to a lot of music in my lifetime, but I can say without hesitation that this is my most favorite, favorite song of all time. It's a shame Steve never does it in concert anymore. A shame. But he's one of the finest musicians there is. See him live if you ever get a chance.

  • Don't worry i'm seeing him this summer with Eric Clapton :D

  • Wow.... I haven't heard this this song for a while.... its a real classic...... probably from the 1980's .....the best decade ever for pop music !!!!

  • She's entitled to her opinion without being jumped down the throat for it.

And I happen to agree with her. Don't like it? Well, thats your problem. Get a hobby thats not getting on people cases because you don't like their opinions

  • To się nazywa muza przez duże M! :-) Oryginał wymiata, nie jakieś tandetne covery lub sample. Steve rulezz! :-)

  • Probably the best song in it's best version of all times.

  • what a voice...

  • He certianly is. Great song.

  • STEVE WINWOOD IS A GREAT MAN

  • Life after the Spencer Davis Band.

  • I love Valerie!!!!!!! :)

  • This guy has lots of soul in his voice

  • Yes he does. He's fantastic!! His lyricsare so amazing too. You don't hear songs like this anymore. It's kind of sad!!

  • and there was everyone thinking that UB40 were the only brummie singers :p

  • Call on me by Eric Pridz is nowhere near as good as this to be honest....

  • More beats [double exclamation mark]

It's safe to say that people who give two shits about "more beats" are probably already watching some techno wank video, not this one.

  • I actually like this song better than the Eric Pridz version with "more beats".. I was just telling people that theres a sample of this song in the newer version... Just like i only knew the newer one till i heard this on my satellite radio a couple weeks ago... phew whats up ur ass?

  • he's like a cross between Conan O' Brien and William DeFoe. Craaaazy...

  • stevie sings better than most

  • she was like jazz on a summer's day...

    excellent song.

  • GREAT SONG.

  • Great sound. The quintessential Winwood...I love this kind of sound; just as I love "Ride Like the Wind" by Christopher Cross.

  • I love winwood in his early day. But his music and everything that he has produced since is awesome. He is a talent that we will look back on his records. He done well.

  • steve winwood as his best. an graet song full of power and harmony

  • I accidently rated your comment down. I'm sorry.

    Steve Winwood rocks!

  • well i rated it 5/5 so it evens out!! lol.....

Steve looks like Conan Obrien and thats not a bad thing!! lol....

  • A song that I never tire of hearing. Steve Winwood seems to perform it effortlessly. It brings back bittersweet memories, too. At the time of this song, I was in love with a girl named Valerie.

  • For me it's the best and favorite song from Winwood. He made other greats but this is the top for me.

Sound and voice throws me back in the 80's.. man what a decade!!

  • me encanta este tema, bien ochentero.Saludos desde Mendoza,Argentina.

  • Is that Conan O Brian? huh huh huh huh yeah heh hehe hehe hehe

  • this song is soo nice...sweet and light

  • The original "Gimme Some Lovin'" (the one you always hear on the radio) was done by the Spencer Davis Group. Steve Winwood sings lead on that classic at the tender young age of 16.

  • This song is just pure addiction!!

  • oh yes!

  • Excellent

  • me gusta mucho esta canciòn.Tìpica de los 80`.

  • nice song

  • ah fuck nothing worse than regret your better off trying than going home and regretting you had'nt!

    kudos to his hair!

  • What sort of shealtered 9-5,stay in the same town same job their whole live piece of Scumbag crap gave you the thumbs down for stating this briallant truthful fact

  • I got you back on a level playing field now. Good comment.....we all shuld think that way

  • What was the name of the band Steve used to be in the late 60s?

  • traffic

  • Thank you. Who sang Give Some Of Lovin?

  • What a great song. It's exactly what it's about, and still something we've all come across.

    Steve Winwood top-notch

  • nice hair!

  • GRAN CANCION ,EXITO TOTAL DE LOS 80

  • wonder how many of today's 'stars' will be around as long as the likes of Stevie, Roger Hodgson, Clapton, Jagger, Phil Collins et al ... these are true greats and exceptionally talented ... I am grateful that I have grown up with them around ...

  • Ha! Half of them will be on those "Where are they now" specials 20 years from now. Most of them are disposable "artists" only capable of a few hits. They certainly won't transcend their time.

  • "Stevie, Roger Hodgson, Clapton, Jagger, Phil Collins"

    "greats and exceptionally talented"

    LOL!

  • Rog-er Who

  • i agree to your comment, i thank God I was there in that golden era.......

  • Great song!

  • My "Valerie" was sitting across from me in a restraunt the other night and I didnt even know it was her until she got up to leave. 8 years ago I couldn't get the nerve up to tell just how I felt. I sat there like I was frozen in time, "Then she just flew away". **Sorry Kelly**
