This thing is a piece of crap, I bought it to replace my LAST Philips DVD Player which stopped working. I get the No Disc error and fear the disc isn't even spinning any more. What a hunk of junk!

People give it a high rating before they even opened the box.people just jump and give it a 5 star.so you must use it for 3 or 4 monthes before I would rate it.you got to test your machine. maybe your rating will drop in the next 4 month's. don't count your chickens before they hatch.Grandma should know.thorough the woods to grand mothers house we go.this stock market is fake sense Obama bailed them out.things are cheap.its time to take from the rich & give to the poor Robin Hood

the problem with a lot of new Electronics is they design them so they will brake.they do it on purpose because they want you to buy another one.heres a list of all the electronics that have broke on me. Seagate FreeAgent 1.5 (3 times) and they replaces it and send me 2tb for free for complaining BBB website. Cordless phones dont last the battery's Expire & batteries cost more then justu buying a new phone,Danby Countertop Dishwasher flooded out my Apartment food built up in it.Water not shut off
i never used the hdmi otion using the hdmi cable b4 till yesterday the difference is amazing very close to bluray good alternative if ur not fussed about being the latest.
Sorry about the inconvenience. I tried researching this DVD player in particular and only very few people seem to have problems. I would suggest you call Philips customer support and if the the DVD player is still under its warranty period then they might fix it for free.
hey, i have a hdtv, so if i brought this dvd player, or a similar one with 'upscaling feature' would it play a normal dvd and convert it to high defenition? as in a normal dvd that u wud rent.. it wud convert it to hd?? thanks

Wow that is the most amazing thing I have ever seen! - you obviously lead a very exciting life. I bought some toilet paper today.. perhaps i should video myself opening it and placing it on the holder.
It's DVD upconversion man, upconverts DVD's to 1080p. A lot of people get these when they don't want to get Blu-ray yet, and frankly speaking all the standalone Blu-ray players in the market suck and they all have problems one way or the other.
why do u think most people are geting Ps3's for Bluray insted of a BluRay player cus they know Bluray players suck but het PS3 hardly has any probs so ya
That's what I used to think, but the PS3 is not the best Blu-Ray/DVD player. Having a good player is just as important as the TV itself. I can definitely attest that it's not the best for DVD upconverting. This Philips DVP5982 does a way better job upscaling to 1080p than the PS3; it can look almost as good as HD. What bugs me about this player, though, is that it doesn't turn on right away or respond to open/close too well. And the menu also takes up like 90% of the screen -- very stupid.

It's pretty good, not as good as Blu-ray but its does a decent job of upconverting the signal to high res.
