  • Wu-Tang is for the children!

  • Pretty sure the 90's was the Greatest decade for music. Sit and think.

  • @booboocubs The seventies was the best year for music, then the sixties, then the nineties. The eighties is forgetful. lol. Just saying.

  • @ugleeamerican Well I grew up in the 90's so.....still better than the sixties ha! And yes the eighties are forgetable

  • A haunting song by a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. How singer/songwriters of such talent fall into obscurity while Autotuned top 40 twerps rise to megastardom...

    God only knows.

  • How does this song only have 750 thousand views? This is a classic. God do I ever miss the days when music was this good.

  • One of those perfect songs.

  • I Love this song so much. It was better back then. I Love the 90's!

  • Love it! Brings me back to a better day, when I should have actually STAYED home ;)

  • Heard this in the grocery store earlier today! Hadn't heard it in years so it inspired me to look it up on here! :)

  • As a depressed person, this song makes me smile. Probably better than the Prozac I should be taking. Rock On Shawn!!

  • You know how you listen to a song, you know all the words, you sing along but you don't really LISTEN to the song. Today was the first time I listened, really listened and I was like holy crap this is kinda dark...I love it even more now. :D

  • WU TANG IZ 4 THA KIDZ!! WU TANG FOREVER... PEACE

  • I remember being a kid and being incredibly disturbed by this music video. The part where she sinks into the bed still kinda gets me. But this song is amazing.

  • The bird looks bored.

  • Whenever my mom and I would bake things together she would put this song on, my sister would join and we would make cookies, or fudge, or pancakes. I haven't heard this song in years and I just realized how sad that made me.

  • i have lived this song.. therefore.. henceforth. it will be known to all mank ind.. a great song .. with great meaning.

  • I hate this womans voice it grates at my skull like a butter knife being uses as a saw to cut teeth.

  • @Faelsun Then why would you even come to this video..?

  • @Faelsun derp.

  • 112 brought me here...

  • What a good song. Remember it from Real World Boston, and just remembering on the radio.

  • Damn, never really paid attention to the lyrics when I was 13.

  • BEAUTIFUL SONG WITH STRONG LYRICS

ALWAYS LOVED THIS SONG SINCE I WAS LITTLE! <3

  • WUTANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN

  • Sunny's favorite room is the kitchen? Sounds about right...

  • Sunny came home with a some atomic potatoes.

  • My mother was criminally abusive i lashed out at anything I could get my hands on, sadly pets were not safe around me then one day i ran across a house with a mattress leaning against it and i lit it on fire the house burned down to the ground watching it go up in flames was like a metafore for al my anger and rage I was eight at the time. imagine what i'm doing now!

  • @coolecup whiny pansy grow up quit being a wusssy you atttention seeeking fag i hope you burn yourself, go join the army be useful!!!!

  • @coolecup Watchoutwegotabadassoverhere.gif

  • This song is one hell of a Red Dress Letter. HA!

  • According to songfacts:

"This song is about a woman who "Makes a few repairs" to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. She does this in an attempt to escape her past."

  • Sunny came with a 12 gauge.

  • Does this ever remind anyone of the style of vocal in TLC's "Scrubs"?

  • JOB CORPS DAYS BOY I MISS THOSE DAYS

  • use to love this song; guess i still do.

  • I'm pretty sure this song didn't come out until 1999 here in Australia. Anyone else know?

  • strange looking kitchen.

  • This song gives me hope. I think only those of us who have gone through difficult times can understand the message. Sometimes you just want to destroy what causes detriment in your life, but it's never that simple. You can't always walk away. In the song she finally goes over the edge. The fire is cleansing, it's the start of a new beginning, and it signifies hope.

  • So like a woman. Beautiful, sweet, voice like an angel. F@#K with her and she'll burn your s#!t down.

  • such a cool song, but every now and again when she looks in the camera, she's got the crazy eyes, like "ima burn this f--ker doooown!!"

  • I can listen to Shawn for hours on end. Her voice is so smooth and melodic and her songs timeless.

  • I love rediscovering these 90's songs that I heard when I was younger and couldn't remember.

  • @DamianGarcia92

I'm doing the same.... these were good tunes, I didn't realize it then...now they are gems to me

  • love this song! when I was little I was always curious about the bird

  • I love this song... when I was little I always thought it was about me, but my name is Sunny!!!! Though my is spelled a little different, it's spelled Sonnie! But whatever I still love this song!

  • One of my all time favorites!

  • Dry is good but wind is better, strike a match go on and do it ... *shivers*. It's funny how songs you love can scare the crap out of you, haha...

  • you all need to know the difference between songs that are written to be timeless pieces of art and songs written just for the moment. This song fulfills the former, a song like Funky Town by Lipps Inc fulfills the latter.

  • Shawn's music is so beautifully melodic, I just love it.

  • Sounds like Sunny came home to kick some ass.

  • WU-TANG IS FOR THE CHILDREN.WU-TANG IS FOREVER.~~~RIP ODB~~~

  • I don't know how y'all see it... but when it comes to the children, Wu-Tang is for the children!

  • Beautiful

  • Never get sick of this wonderful song

  • LOL, nice accent kelly clarkson ya stupid bitch.

  • Wu-Tang forever and a day!

  • There are heavy metal songs that are not brimming with as much anger and hatred as this song is.

  • @fretlessbass26 don't get me wrong I like shawn colvins much as anyone but I don't get the metal reffernce were is the violence in this song? listen to that foster the people pumped up kicks song thats about kip kinkle if you want poppy tunes and violent lyrics

  • @schipfan360 -- i wouldnt say "violence" so much as a kind of livid, pent up anger.

  • @schipfan360

The song is about revenge, burning down the house, dealing with that list of names... those who can't be forgiven, only punished. And the dripping agony in her performance has more emotional impact than a Metallica thrashfest because of the discordance of the music and lyrics - the slow pace and soft acoustic character are in opposition to the usual paradigm of heavy distorted guitars and crashing drums = angry.

There is an ironic subtlety to this song that is easily missed.

  • @dgmisal1979 I think it's more a song about endings rather than violence. More...hm. More about irreversible consequences and destruction of old ties and trust. It all boils down to what you hear, I suppose.

I totally agree with you on the sound versus the lyrics, though. There's something disturbing about this song, but in that fairy land sort of way, the "It's so pretty I could dance here until I die" way.

  • @tipsywench

Your take makes sense, too - when I hear the "dry is good, wind is better" though, I immediately draw the association with arson - wind is the best way to make sure that fire is most destructive. Either way, though, I think what you are saying makes sense.

  • @fretlessbass26 You are COMPLETELY misinterpreting anger or hatred for ANGST. To compare anything written by Shawn Colvin to metal shows a profound lack of ability to "read" the message brought forth by any song.

  • @southernrockdrummer - I'm going to respectfully disagree, and i think anger and hatred are appropriate terms considering the context of the song, burning down a house full of bad memories. The image that always came to mind - for me anyway, was that scene from forrest Gump where Jenny is throwing rocks at her old house. Thats the kind of anger i would associate with a song like this, and i dont think thats "misreading" anything.

  • @fretlessbass26 Funny you should say that considering I've wanted to make a Metal version of this song but somehow keep the same passion.

  • @fretlessbass26 Damn right, hardest I've ever moshed in my life mate.

  • @fretlessbass26 Yaaah! Little Catholic girl, molestation survivor, scumbag unfaithful - abusive husband, ACOA drop out! Yaaah! Stike a match, set the cornfield on fire and burn the whole dam town down! God dam Canadians.

  • Those most inclined to harm children are (In Order) according to the 3 largest Insurance companies:

    1 Fathers, 2 Teachers, 3 Coaches, 4 Protestant Ministers, 5 Jewish Rabbis,6 Priests.

  • "...dry is good and wind is better, count the years you always knew it, strike a match, go on and do it..."

Could this be why I feel I need to start a fire when I'm bored or angry? Don't know, don't care. I love this song.

  • its gay that i like this song and i know it,fuck

  • @kdiopgh um why is it gay? it was an important part of the 90s mate

  • @oneweirdfellah well i wouldnt play this song infront of my friends thats for sure

  • @kdiopgh LOL

  • this is way better than todays music!!!

  • I`m serving 2 years for arson. This song make me hard.

  • I`m serving 2 years for arson. This song make hard.

  • @stuvo1977 you idiot you left a typo

  • @stuvo1977 sorry

  • my name's Sunny! no kidding! I love my name!!

  • Wow saw this on MTV back then. So many memories.

  • Donna lewis, sixpence none the richer and Shawn Colvin, enough said.

  • Taylor Swift love you music ; )

  • "WuTang is for the children, we teach the childrens" ODB

  • Thumbs up if you hate all the people who keep putting all the "thumbs up if..." comments.

  • thumbs up if you came here because taylor swift sang this and you wanted to know what this song was! :)

  • Saw her last night at the Taylor Swift concert, She was amazing(:

  • PLEASE BRING BACK THE 80S AND THE 90S

  • I always thought the shit ive done would come back and haunt me...this makes me think more...but ive always thought about vengeance for the shit people have done to me...this also makes me thing more...

  • Sunny came home and she was F ' ing PISSED & burned down the F ' ing house

  • I wish I was this age back in the 90's. I was only 7 by the time the 90's turned into the 2000's, but I loved the music.

  • One of my favorite songs from my childhood! Brings back great memories of 7th and 8th grade! Probably my first guilty pleasure song!

  • @chabrastamepues Dude me too! I was in 8th grade when this came out. Spent the summer evenings in my room with the windows open watching music videos then sneaking out at night with the tunes still in my head. Brings me back everytime I hear it.

  • l0ve it!

  • always listened this on the radio in 1997, at the easy rock FM channel. it used to repeatedly play everyday lol

  • Sunny came home

  • I was brought back to this song when it was used in The Sopranos, when Vito tells Johnny Cakes he's been dreaming of him.

  • 32 people were on her list of names.

  • she started singing at a young age in her hometown of carbondale illinois from what i was told,

  • nice song for a road trip

  • What does the lyric "Dry is Good, Wind is Better" mean?

  • @TAXtheAtheist This song is about setting fire to a home she used to live in, perhaps as a child. The line means that a dry area is alright for setting a fire, but wind is better because it'll keep the fire going and it'll spread.

  • @TAXtheAtheist Why is your name TAXtheAtheist?... Just curious

  • @Charles87sf It's a rebuttle against militant atheists who desire to tax or abolish Christianity. I can gladly exist with normal atheists. It's always the extremist that ruin things- inclueding Christians like Warren Jeffs (polygamist).

  • @TAXtheAtheist if dry is good, and wind makes things even drier then wind>dry. haha

  • I wonder if most people know the real meaning behind the lyrics...

  • tswizzle sent me here

  • This song is so amazing! I love the message that this song sends: If you are tired of your stressful life, you can change. You can rise (transcend) above your problems. Strike a match, and throw all of your problems into the fire (metaphorically that is). You are now a changed different person. I love 90s music!

  • 32 people didn't have time for a few small repairs

  • I wish Shawn Colvin and Jewel would do a duet together.

  • Wow.. sheeee's NOT as attractive as I thought she'd be...

  • @whizfingers

ahahaha this is exactly what I was thinking....

  • @whizfingers Well she was 41 when she did this video...

  • @whizfingers Are you kidding? She had me at the first note!

  • This and 'It Don't Hurt' (Sheryl Crow) two best songs EVA about demolishing your house to get over some loser from your past. (both written within a year of each other what was going on?)

  • humans are inherently evil

  • @jessicalilac the only humans that are inherently evil have anti-social personality disorders. They hardly represent all human nature or the entire human race.

  • Look guys, gotta admit, I didn't really fancy all this stuff back in those days, mainly cause I was more into the harder rock scene. Used to listen to classics like Zep Stones and Yardbirds and at the same time the current Seattle Sound Scene, (Grunge) but this was and always will be part of that era which I embrace as my teen years. Now I look back and compare, what is out there now and say to myself "GOD THANK YOU FOR HAVING LET ME LIVE DURING A WORTHY DECADE IN TIME". :) I love this.

  • Comment removed

  • Dry is good but wind is better...remember that!

  • nice song for road tripping

  • chorus always reminded me of sophie b. hawkins' as i lay me down

  • come on vh1 make a 90s channel!!

  • everybody knows this song is about a pyromaniac .....right? I love this song and as a licensed Pyro tech i love it more.

  • well fuck. a rhianna ad is displayed outside the video box. way to ruin my 90's reminiscing moment..

  • i remember hearing this on the radio all the time between ages 7-10 in the late 90's...still a great song!

  • One of my most favorite songs EVER! I relate SO much to just finally having had ENOUGH! I've dreamed of opening Sunny's "book"......

  • 90s were the best, end of

  • Such a beautiful song. Hard to imagine it's about spousal abuse and a vengeance murder.

  • shes kinda creepy looking, but love the song

  • @yurfavoriteahmed I bet you're a total picture as well.

  • @baobab68utube haha, eh touche. I wouldnt say im creepy looking though. But I love the song though.

  • Sonny and Cher came home...

  • Love this song, Love the beginning.

  • Nice to know i'm not the only one who misses the 90's...Best times in my life

  • @jaysdavidson the 90's are better than any year of the new millenium

  • @jaysdavidson yeah, me too. and i was in my 30s. ha. 94 -98 just had good, memorable music, imo

  • I listened to this on the bus.

  • video killed the radio store - its ALL about look, hell if you go back to the 50 or 60 most really good singers (female) where rather plain - so no its looks first and sound second...wonder what the future holds with VR???

  • At the end it is the words and music that matter, this song will have a long history, because it is about more than appearances.

  • am i the only one that thinks this song blows

  • @woners1 Mmm, no.

  • each time I hear this song, i get shivers. when I was a little girl, about 10. this is the song that I loved but didn't tell anyone it when I started to have real interest in music. I knew this song meant more then melody.. as i got older and having more understanding of what the lyrics mean.. its sadden me how life is not easy and feel like just one wrong movement everything goes down and am more luckier then most women.. having men abusing women, and the world around them.

  • This woman is rad.Jus' saying, her music doesn't revolves woman wearing revealing clothing, and men saying they are over their girlfriend, while girls are dancing trashy.I admire her for writing this, because it shows that girls aren't just vaginas and break-up bullshit. This song can be interpreted any way,but I personally think its about sexism.

  • She is not a Pin-up, she does not have huge tits, her face is not the "beauty standard-alike", but... this woman is sexy as hell, moves something that trascends from the pure sex, moves something deeper, something at a different level...

  • I love this song. It always made me think of A Series Of Unfortunate Events.

  • I will give new music one thing, the girls now are much hotter. But most sound as good as me and I can't sing for shit... and I'm a guy... and I have a cold.

  • @stuvo1977. Burnt toast is british? LMAO. Burnt is out of the dictionary. I have said "I burnt my toast" Burnt is not british slang. It's past tense. And who the eff cares if it irriates you to your last core? I didn't realize we had to speak the way you want us too. What a literary chicken fucker.

  • @maggierose1978 talent needs no recognition, and in my opinion it's all the better that success cannot easily exploit greatness. let the people listen to what they will, but that doesn't change what is good and bad; that is the job of perception.

  • damn it! i luv this fuckin song!

  • @maggierose1978 and all your mindless followers,

you talk about Madonna like she burst onto the scene and turned the music world upside down yesterday, and not 30 years ago.

  • 90s are the best

also gotta give credict to the 80s balleds some of todays music is all rite but no one can purly sing anymore

  • 90s are the best

  • i miss the 90's style of music. ballads arent what they used to be. we need more raw talent on the waves like Dave Matthews. he never ruined what was great about 90's music.

  • The song is about a woman who burns her house down-- the "book"- refers to a book of matches......

  • I remember when this first came and VH1 played it on a regular. Why don't music channels show music videos anymore? :(

  • Don,t want advert before songs stop with this crap

  • @087mail It`s not an advert. It`s an ad. Are you British or something? If you are American, have some pride and trying saying ad for a change. If you are British continue on your merry little way. Americans need to quit adopting British lingo. It irritates me to my last nerve. Like when Americans say "spot on" for exactly or burnt toast instead of burned toast. This concludes my rant (Yes, I know the language originated in England...I don`t care!!!).

  • You can get banned from MTV? Wow...
