A haunting song by a beautiful woman with a beautiful voice. How singer/songwriters of such talent fall into obscurity while Autotuned top 40 twerps rise to megastardom...
You know how you listen to a song, you know all the words, you sing along but you don't really LISTEN to the song. Today was the first time I listened, really listened and I was like holy crap this is kinda dark...I love it even more now. :D
I remember being a kid and being incredibly disturbed by this music video. The part where she sinks into the bed still kinda gets me. But this song is amazing.
Whenever my mom and I would bake things together she would put this song on, my sister would join and we would make cookies, or fudge, or pancakes. I haven't heard this song in years and I just realized how sad that made me.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
My mother was criminally abusive i lashed out at anything I could get my hands on, sadly pets were not safe around me then one day i ran across a house with a mattress leaning against it and i lit it on fire the house burned down to the ground watching it go up in flames was like a metafore for al my anger and rage I was eight at the time. imagine what i'm doing now!
"This song is about a woman who "Makes a few repairs" to the oven, then uses the gases to burn her house down by lighting a match. She does this in an attempt to escape her past."
This song gives me hope. I think only those of us who have gone through difficult times can understand the message. Sometimes you just want to destroy what causes detriment in your life, but it's never that simple. You can't always walk away. In the song she finally goes over the edge. The fire is cleansing, it's the start of a new beginning, and it signifies hope.
I love this song... when I was little I always thought it was about me, but my name is Sunny!!!! Though my is spelled a little different, it's spelled Sonnie! But whatever I still love this song!
you all need to know the difference between songs that are written to be timeless pieces of art and songs written just for the moment. This song fulfills the former, a song like Funky Town by Lipps Inc fulfills the latter.
@fretlessbass26 don't get me wrong I like shawn colvins much as anyone but I don't get the metal reffernce were is the violence in this song? listen to that foster the people pumped up kicks song thats about kip kinkle if you want poppy tunes and violent lyrics
The song is about revenge, burning down the house, dealing with that list of names... those who can't be forgiven, only punished. And the dripping agony in her performance has more emotional impact than a Metallica thrashfest because of the discordance of the music and lyrics - the slow pace and soft acoustic character are in opposition to the usual paradigm of heavy distorted guitars and crashing drums = angry.
There is an ironic subtlety to this song that is easily missed.
@dgmisal1979 I think it's more a song about endings rather than violence. More...hm. More about irreversible consequences and destruction of old ties and trust. It all boils down to what you hear, I suppose.
I totally agree with you on the sound versus the lyrics, though. There's something disturbing about this song, but in that fairy land sort of way, the "It's so pretty I could dance here until I die" way.
Your take makes sense, too - when I hear the "dry is good, wind is better" though, I immediately draw the association with arson - wind is the best way to make sure that fire is most destructive. Either way, though, I think what you are saying makes sense.
@fretlessbass26 You are COMPLETELY misinterpreting anger or hatred for ANGST. To compare anything written by Shawn Colvin to metal shows a profound lack of ability to "read" the message brought forth by any song.
@southernrockdrummer - I'm going to respectfully disagree, and i think anger and hatred are appropriate terms considering the context of the song, burning down a house full of bad memories. The image that always came to mind - for me anyway, was that scene from forrest Gump where Jenny is throwing rocks at her old house. Thats the kind of anger i would associate with a song like this, and i dont think thats "misreading" anything.
@fretlessbass26 Yaaah! Little Catholic girl, molestation survivor, scumbag unfaithful - abusive husband, ACOA drop out! Yaaah! Stike a match, set the cornfield on fire and burn the whole dam town down! God dam Canadians.

@chabrastamepues Dude me too! I was in 8th grade when this came out. Spent the summer evenings in my room with the windows open watching music videos then sneaking out at night with the tunes still in my head. Brings me back everytime I hear it.
@TAXtheAtheist This song is about setting fire to a home she used to live in, perhaps as a child. The line means that a dry area is alright for setting a fire, but wind is better because it'll keep the fire going and it'll spread.
@Charles87sf It's a rebuttle against militant atheists who desire to tax or abolish Christianity. I can gladly exist with normal atheists. It's always the extremist that ruin things- inclueding Christians like Warren Jeffs (polygamist).
This song is so amazing! I love the message that this song sends: If you are tired of your stressful life, you can change. You can rise (transcend) above your problems. Strike a match, and throw all of your problems into the fire (metaphorically that is). You are now a changed different person. I love 90s music!

video killed the radio store - its ALL about look, hell if you go back to the 50 or 60 most really good singers (female) where rather plain - so no its looks first and sound second...wonder what the future holds with VR???
each time I hear this song, i get shivers. when I was a little girl, about 10. this is the song that I loved but didn't tell anyone it when I started to have real interest in music. I knew this song meant more then melody.. as i got older and having more understanding of what the lyrics mean.. its sadden me how life is not easy and feel like just one wrong movement everything goes down and am more luckier then most women.. having men abusing women, and the world around them.
This woman is rad.Jus' saying, her music doesn't revolves woman wearing revealing clothing, and men saying they are over their girlfriend, while girls are dancing trashy.I admire her for writing this, because it shows that girls aren't just vaginas and break-up bullshit. This song can be interpreted any way,but I personally think its about sexism.
She is not a Pin-up, she does not have huge tits, her face is not the "beauty standard-alike", but... this woman is sexy as hell, moves something that trascends from the pure sex, moves something deeper, something at a different level...
I will give new music one thing, the girls now are much hotter. But most sound as good as me and I can't sing for shit... and I'm a guy... and I have a cold.
@stuvo1977. Burnt toast is british? LMAO. Burnt is out of the dictionary. I have said "I burnt my toast" Burnt is not british slang. It's past tense. And who the eff cares if it irriates you to your last core? I didn't realize we had to speak the way you want us too. What a literary chicken fucker.
@maggierose1978 talent needs no recognition, and in my opinion it's all the better that success cannot easily exploit greatness. let the people listen to what they will, but that doesn't change what is good and bad; that is the job of perception.
i miss the 90's style of music. ballads arent what they used to be. we need more raw talent on the waves like Dave Matthews. he never ruined what was great about 90's music.
@087mail It`s not an advert. It`s an ad. Are you British or something? If you are American, have some pride and trying saying ad for a change. If you are British continue on your merry little way. Americans need to quit adopting British lingo. It irritates me to my last nerve. Like when Americans say "spot on" for exactly or burnt toast instead of burned toast. This concludes my rant (Yes, I know the language originated in England...I don`t care!!!).
yes the song is beautiful ,the first time i heard this was in newark castle a couple of months ago.some bands were setting up for an outdoor gig the sound guy played this song ,sunny came home .i was so impressed with the song i asked him who was singing.shawn colvin he said.fantastic artist and singer.

each time I hear this song, i get shivers. when I was a little girl, about 10. this is the song that I loved but didn't tell anyone it when I started to have real interest in music.

I love this song. It always made me think of A Series Of Unfortunate Events.

I watched Ryan Cole's "My Suicide" video on youtube and loved it so much that I bought his album on amazon. Just thought I'd share with everyone.

@maggierose1978 and all your mindless followers,
you talk about Madonna like she burst onto the scene and turned the music world upside down yesterday, and not 30 years ago.

i miss the 90's style of music. ballads arent what they used to be. we need more raw talent on the waves like Dave Matthews. he never ruined what was great about 90's music.

The song is about a woman who burns her house down-- the "book"- refers to a book of matches......

I remember when this first came and VH1 played it on a regular. Why don't music channels show music videos anymore? :(

Don,t want advert before songs stop with this crap
087mail 6 months ago
@087mail It`s not an advert. It`s an ad. Are you British or something? If you are American, have some pride and trying saying ad for a change. If you are British continue on your merry little way. Americans need to quit adopting British lingo. It irritates me to my last nerve. Like when Americans say "spot on" for exactly or burnt toast instead of burned toast. This concludes my rant (Yes, I know the language originated in England...I don`t care!!!).
