There is a new nano-technlogy emulsion fuel that will save you more, reducing pollution emission up to 90%. This is a emulsion of 30% water and 90% fuel which cuts fuel procurement costs and gives the reduction in pollutions you are seeking. Bunker fuel once emulsified handles like a higher grade fuel. This is a no changes needed in engines or equipment and this is a no risk, no cost program for the user. udbma@infowest.com

@uni000ver000sal No, if you watch part 4 of this series, it is a clockwise rotation propeller. As they attach the propeller, you can see its a left-hand thread on the nut.
The world's largest and the best ship doesn't STILL mean insubmersible(remember Titanic etc.) Serious storm can cause at least serious damage to this vessel.
@JimPrower It's probably not silicone which would not perform well in such a critical high heat high compression area. They are probably using a material called Hylomar which is specially engineered for high heat, heavy weight, high stress, and compression applications. One of my uncles used to be a ship builder and I spent a lot of time in the ship yard when I was younger watching big ships being put together.
@IronPump89 they show you that it has a bearing sleeve made of a softer metal usually copper alloy , u can glimpse it when he is cleaning it , I imagine they must use this kind to disperse the 105 ton shaft and heavy prop. And isnt it amazing how litttle gasket sealer they used , how can such a large engine block and head be made to fit so tight as to only need so little? Isn,t it beautiful that our available materials allow us to build such massive ships, and planes? Cheers from Delaware u.s.
caveman357 Pump old stuff out pump new stuff in that simple, but every day you sample the lube oil for grit toxins as that can tell u what is wrong or going wrong with the engine.
When you are in port of course, its pumped ashore its my job as a marine engineer! but you can put so many parts per million over the side when you are deep sea. As for the amount of oil in it, well as long as it shows up on the dipstick (same as a car but much bigger) you're fine in my 5 years at sea i have never done a complete oil change on a slow speed diesel engine, there is so many things that can be added to the oil to keep it in workable condition.
So you put additives in the dirty oil to keep it running smooth, and you dump oil in the sea? But only in small amounts? Thanks for the reply by the way. This is really interesting stuff to me!
You're welcome, but we put the additives in before the oil gets dirty there are really sensitive treatments we put it through, but the biggest problems are carbon and water, some of the chemicals you can add to this oil are really impressive. I am convinced that if the automotive sector had these additives castrol, BP and shell would pannic! The oil that goes over the side is from the bilges goes through an oily water seperator then over the side but u try and put no oil over the side.
Why would you say that the gas companys would panic? you would still use gas to burn to make combustion for the engine. the oil just lubricates the engine parts. These boats use diesel engines, right? im not very familar with these types of engines, but they get regular oil changes, just like regular engines ( talking about automibiles, not boats) right?
I meant the lubricating oil, there is so many additives that can extend the life and maintain the quality of the oil, lets say for example, your car could go 100,000 miles between oil changes, thats got to be alot less cash for the likes of shell etc, than say changing it every 5000miles.
Too answer your other questions now, Yes most of these boats use diesel engines but, you can also use a fuel called Heavy fuel oil or HFO.
Which if left at room temperature resembles tar rather than diesel. HFO is of course dirt cheap. Now there are lots of theorys where this comes from I hate the stuff, but when you order fuel by the tonne its alot cheaper. It has to be kept hot all the time.
You use diesel to start the engine but when you get out of port you slowly phase in HFO
>"Now there are lots of theorys where this comes from"
I can't help but imagine someone giving a presentation about heavy fuel oil. "Well, we don't really know where it comes from, but it's dirt-cheap and it works, so no-one really gives a shit" ;D
Some ship engines can be run even on crude oil, though with some limitations. I think that's an achievement.
@caveman357 It is illegal to put oil over the side, one would be arrested hung drawn an quatered, chief engineers and captains have arrested for a cardinal sin like this, You are technically allowed to only put 4 ppm of oil over the side.
Yes we do, it goes through a purifire; there are usually at least two on board any vessel, FO (fuel oil) and LO (lube oil), Where they work on the principle that oil floats on water and there are disks spinning to seperate the anything, such as likes of carbon and that sinks to the bottom and the clean oil/fuel gets pumped back round to the sevice tanks. But you have to open them up every week to clean them a bit like washing dishes. Search Alfa-Laval probably most common purifire for more info
@cpotti23 Nope, Trying to get into it in Australia and they are so caught up in red tape, So I need to change my trade to get in to it, but they will not let me do that
I am a mechanic fitter by trade. We had 8 on our ship all MAPX 2 for HFO and 1 for MGO, LO for M/E, 3 Little ones for the genes and one for waste. I got a engine ratiing certificate.....
