  • Remember when I was at school and we sang this, I also remember seeing Barbara Dixon in pantomime years ago at the pavilion in glasgow

  • spine tingling, saw this live and it was AMAZING

  • Barbar Dickson one humble lady who has a massive talent...the voice speaks for itself a million times over....i cannot think of another vocal as pure and uplifitng as Barbara even today ....who matches this..tell me....Barabara Dickson is a unsung legend in my eyes..

  • 31st October

    WILLY RUSSELL INTERVIEW

In the build up to his 'An Evening With Willy Russell at the Lowry, Willy Russell has given an interview to WHAT'S ON STAGE.COM in which he talks about BLOOD BROTHERS… The Movie, Liverpool and the capital of culture celebrations, his love of Slava’s Snow Show and his future plans, including his forthcoming date in Manchester.

  • tell me it's not true wateva had happened wid me....

  • I cant believe you people, irrespective of awards, barbara is iconic to this production. in liverpool she is a heroine, trust me, if its not barbara its a second rate BB production

  • Blood Brothers touring Grimsby, UK for 1 week in May

  • Saw her perform this live last night and it was truly amazing!

  • Mrs Johnstone and Mrs Lyons forced the superstition to become true =\

  • @gbcvn Well, no, she hasn't won a Grammy, granted, but she's done rather better than that. She's won TWO Olivier awards and received an OBE from Her Majesty the Queen for Services to Music and Drama as well as selling millions of records worldwide. That's the trouble about the US - it's so parochial. Oh and if you truly believe that Helen Reddy's "I Am Woman" was responsible for the 'women's lib' movement in the 70s then you probably think "Rocket Man" gave NASA the idea for the Mars Landings...

  • You are right not rocket science just a simple typo. Sorry

  • Beautiful. Thank you.

  • wonderful simply wonderful

  • Wow her facial expressions really just have me captivated i really believe in her!

I could watch her singing all day! mind blowing!!!!

  • If there is a better song then I have not heard it.

  • I saw Barbara as Mrs Jones in Blood Brothers 15 years ago , when she sang this the hairs on the back of my neck stood to attention , after all this time they still do fabulous song from tearjerking heartbreaking show , INC\REDIBLE PERFORMANCE :)

  • Love this play its so emotional!!

  • Barbara Dickenson half Liverpudian or not does a fine performance. Willy Russell himself asked Helen to play the role more than once. She turned it down a few times and finally accepted...And the Australian Helen Reddy performs a stunning version. No slight to Barbara I just happen to think Helen Reddy does a spectacular performance on this song!

  • @gbcvn

Its DICKSON not Dickenson. Not exactly rocket science - given it names her at the top of the page.

  • I saw Blood Brothers on a trip to England this past summer.

    I'll be perfectly honest.

    I cried.

    It was simply amazing.

  • @MaliceMaid I've seen it three times 1995 Liverpool 2002 London 2009 Liverpool and it just gets more emotional said don't worry you're not the only one ! if I get the chance to go again I will . I live just outside of Liverpool and now 65 probably connect with everything that's going on .

  • im Linda in Blood Brothers at my school. my best mate is mrs Johnstone ;)

  • I truly love this play "Blood Brothers"

  • Saw this play last Thursay with my school and its one of the best shows i have ever seen!! xx

  • Love this song, love this musical! Where can I find a decent version of this musical?

  • Barbara does not have great eyesight which may cast some light on her performance for you ilvtmta.

Vocally she cannot be bettered, her rendition is definitive

  • Rebecca Storm does a great job on this also

  • she is the one and only mrs j in my eyes... except for me of course, when i got the honor to play the role last fall. =P

  • She has a lovely voice, but it's a strange performance. No emotion whatsoever.

Until the end of the song, I had no idea there was an audience. It looks like she picked a spot, focused on it and never made eye contact with the audience. I though her shoes were nailed to the floor, but she moved her feet at the end.

Petula's voice is not as strong, but her performance of this song is very moving. One really believes she was just told that her sons are dead.

  • All the squabling over who sing it the best PLEASE! Dickson did a great job. Helen Reddy does an outstanding job...They are two completely different stles. One of the thing I love about Helen, she sounds like know one else. Technicly Helen is outstanding...so I give those their opinion that don't like her unique sound However, Write a song, sing it and record it, sell millions of records, win an grammy, define an era...Then come back to me and we can debate Helen Reddy talent!

  • @gbcvn you've clearly never heard Bernie Nolan sing it then......

  • @gbcvn

This song is known in Liverpool as 'The Barbara Dickson Anthem'. Half Liverpudlian, she was chosen by Willy Russell to create the character of Mrs J and she won an Olivier Award for her performance. I saw her on opening night in London in 1983 in the original Liverpool production (which was much darker and edgier than the current anaemic Kenright London production) She has never been bettered.

  • I went to see her in concert , she was wonderful .

  • Stunning!

  • isn,t this just a classic, The absolutely brilliant Barbara Dickson.

  • outstanding performance

  • still running in London after 21 years !

  • @sandmansam1965

have to go see the boyfriend soon so i can seee itt :D

  • @sandmansam1965

ex boyfriend/mate now sorry * xD

  • Haha I Am Auditioning With @Bahleaver I Love This Song She Sound's Amazing I Can't Wait

  • @CCBellaPaige13 Yeah! (: <3

  • Omg, my school's doing a production on Blood Brothers and I'm singing this for audition, and this woman is so amazing! I feel bad though, lol. I can't top that.

  • i think Barbabra Dickson has an amazing voice for this song, i love 2 sing this wenever i hear it

  • nobody does this better

  • Has me in tears every time

  • this is the original! it can't be done any better!

  • i need one with lyric please.......

  • shes amazing...:D

  • ADORE THIS SONG

  • Still the best version of this song

  • The astounding vocal genius of Barbara Dixon and a wonderfully emotional song beautifully written and delivered. All things considered, a perfect 3 minutes 22 seconds of music.

  • amazing song.. but the vocal from her isn't half as good as other women who have played the part. She misses out a lot of the higher notes in this, which I think removes any colour, emotion and depth to the performance and the song.

  • i can't listen to this without crying its such a powerful song is exccelent ^^

  • Helen Reddy's version gets me all the time!

  • @charlessasears If you're going to spam, at least pay attention.

  • amazing voice...x

  • Anyone else notice a GB election parallel here?

  • Say it's just a show!

    On the Radio!

That we can turn over and start again

That we can start over, it's only a game!

  • There's no doubt she cant sing, but I don't really like the way she sings this :/

  • @elliemoorby there's no backing singers from the original song

  • As a Scouser .. i have to say there is no musical/play in the world which has the same feeling of emotion as Blood Brothers when its played in the Liverpool Empire Theater ... its simply beyond belief .. highly recommend it to anyone

  • @flamehart0

Absolutely agree with you.. I saw it for the very first time last Friday in the Empire and was overcome with emotion

  • Went to see her at the royal concert hall in glasgow last month, great night.

  • this song makes me cry! x

  • The girls in group 2 of "Over the rainbow" sung this song so well =D Well, three out of four of them did anyway =] oxox

  • wow!

  • That's ridiculous. She is one of the greatest singers this country has ever produced.

  • our schools doing this show, its really good but sad at the end.

  • going to see the show in nottingham soon this is my 5 time too love the show lots

  • Just seen this in Bradford. Amazing.

  • @djduchesse: I hated the musical when I bought the tape back in the day, but when I took my partner to see his favorite musical in the world, I was a blubbering baby by the end and had to meet the lead characters after. I was so moved, I couldn't believe it.

  • i have to sing this in my singing leson ans am not looking forward to it .. :/

  • OMG!!! We sing this as a leaver's song! :( Brings back the memories!!! :'(

  • i went to see the play like a week ago it wads so good and am not into plays but this 1 was really good

  • This song made me cry and i don't cry at many musicals.

  • was she the woman in the actual blood brothers?

  • @maeganla, think it's mostly rebecca storm, she's been playin that role on and off for about 20 years. still was last time i saw it anyway, about 3 years ago. westend that is.

  • Barbara was the original Mrs Johnstone in the 1983 production. And still the best...

  • i might be doing this for my singing exams :D!!!

  • yes! you should! ^_^

  • @xmisslbx hope it went well :)

  • where can i download the soundtracks from ? :[

  • Does anyone know what has happened to Barbara's website? Now that she's promoting her book etc; it seems weird that there is no information on her.

  • It's working all right, theres a msg saying it was off line for a few days due to problems

  • I have 2 sing this as part of my GCSE drama scene!

  • carwyncymru comments (the late great stephanie lawrence)has she passed away?

  • Stephanie Lawrence died in 2000.

  • i had to do it for gcses

  • when was this filmed?

  • i have to admitt i saw the show in london many years back with the late great stephanie lawrance in 1992 she was amazing. i can't comment on other actresses except fr bernnie and lind nolan in the tourinf productions,

but miss lawrance u were amazing and a true star xxx RIP

  • We found out this Spring that we were doing Blood Brothers this Fall. We had tryouts on the first. I just found out that I got the lead! I'll be playing Mrs. Johnstone! I'm soooo excited! I love this show!!!

  • Well, Dickson should be your inspiration. It was written for her and no one has ever surpassed her rendition of this song.

  • My friend runs a website for the show. Go to my profile, or see my videos to find out more, or wahtever.

Including exclusive cast interviews, including Lyn Paul, Niki Evans, and Broadway's Philip Lehl, who played Mickey.

  • I just saw "Blood Brothers" in the London

I LOVED IT and I loved al the songs in it, but this was probably my favorite.

  • saw it last week in London.

    Awsome

  • This is the best musical in the world and the reprise of this song at the end is the most powerful ending to a play I have ever seen! Really beautiful!!!

  • batachav, you are the kind of superior arsehole trhat this planet DOES NOT NEED

  • No need to be mean.

  • keyboard warrior

  • been to see blood brothers at the empire in liverpool twice, amazing.

  • somebody has to i guess. =p

Wolverhamptons Grand is quite a good venue for BB the production was amazing =]

  • Absolutely fantastic!

  • The definitive version..... just outstanding. The voice has so much emotion.

  • Saw Blood Brothers in Sydney in '89 with Chrissy Amphlette & Russell Crowe. One of the best musicals ever and Chrissy's performance was superlative. Makes me teary-eyed just hearing the music again.

  • luv this song!

  • cried when i saw it. was sitting beside my cousin who was wearing a white jumper so he was easy to pick out in the crowd so it was like they were acting for us and it made it more real

  • umm its a memory deary... and its not like you have to read everything others write.

  • Haha, owned.

  • when i saw it 2 weeks ago i was crying to and my best friend was in a flood of tears and every one in the theater could hear her!

  • she's just so good, isn't she?

her voice is so natural- it seems like she just opens her mouth and it comes out.. so beautifully.. so effortless..

    Amazing!

  • going to see this with skwl in june at the Phoenix theatre London :)

  • i saw it with my school. this play sent shivers down my spine but its really good.

  • I went to see this musical (Blood Brothers) two years ago for a GCSE Drama and everytime i hear this song it make me emotional :'(...Truely the best musical ever...and great song.

  • i went in 2008 - Phoenix theatre - English set text.

IT WAS BRILLIANT, SMASHING, i cant put it into words

  • Barbara Dickson has a great voice and its true this song was written with her in mind. A musical based in liverpool sung wonderfully my a glasweigan canny beat it :D

  • Gotta' love that song! However i am partial to 'Devils got you number' :)

  • He's staring through your windows, he's creeping down the hall! = P

  • lol excellent! XD

  • We're doing it in English, you see. It's a fantastic musical of mine, definitely one of my all-time favourites! = P

    "Say it's just pretend,

    say it's just the end,

    of an old movie,

    with Marilyn Moroe..." = )

  • Well you missed the point 3373157as I am commenting on this song clip from TV not the stage performance. Helen may be a dreary actress, and lets not mention Airport 75 and the nun outfit, but she can sing, and quite a bit better than Barbara. Petula does this song with some genuine emotion but her voice is a touch wobbly at 75. I expect Shirley Bassey would whoosh them all off the stage in one breath. Now there's a star.

  • Hilarious thought - Shirley does Mrs Johnstone. I love her too, but I don't get that you don't rate Barbara Dickson. I saw her recently in concert and couldn't believe the power in her voice (and she's in her 60's)I'm not keen on the 70's pop stuff, but the folk stuff she has recently returned to, is amazing. Guess we just have different tastes.

  • Reddy sing better than than the truly great Barbara Dickson.??? Never in a million years! Dickson is world class - one of the greatest singers the UK has ever produced. And certainly a more interesting, subtle, intelligent and sophisticated artist AND musician than the absurd, overblown vulgar Shirley Bassey - who has wreaked havoc on countless great songs.

  • We Absolutely Love This Song, So Much Emotion And Feeling In The Words, We Went To Watch This At The Theartre We Couldnt Stop Crying, It Is Soo Moving!!

  • Pathetic comment. She's singiging this on a tv show and the song was written for her - the writer believing to this day that she was the definitive Mrs.J. Did you want her to come on to a tv show wearing an apron, covered in blood? As for Helen Reddy - please! One of the worst singers in the history of pop, who incidently also said that Dickson was the best Mrs. J.

  • she is good

  • 8 times iv seen this show barbara sings the best, this final song makes anyone want to cry at the end

  • Please, please...Listen to that other Scot Barbara Dickson. Sings better than any of those west end luvvies and her tone maybe like Susan Boyle's but there is no question as to who is the greatest singer. I can't understand this elaine paige thing - why does Susan Boyle want to sound like her when her fellow Scot has the better voice?

  • What a crass and stupid comment!

  • hmph it is true, she's an amazing singer, but with wavey hair she looks too chavvy

  • The woman this song was written for and still the best. This is what Susan Boyle should aspire to. Easily greater than Paige and closer in tone to Susan. Willie Russell (who wrote this song) says no one comes close to Dickson

  • Oh shut up! Idiot

  • lmfao i pooed myself when the gun went off, it really echoes in tht theatre

    amazing production tho

  • so did i, that gunshot scared the hell out of me..

  • saw this at Phonix Theatre in London couple week ago was brilliant loved it want 2 c again

  • same! i saw it yesterday at the phoenix theatre. it was amzing! i loved mickey (ben sewell) <3

  • Saw this at Pheonix Theatre in London last night. Best Play Ever. Very Well Done.

  • ...and of course...in the original cast of Blood Brothers...her voice made the show famous with the fantastic music...

  • I agree - Barabara dickson has a powerful and crystal clear beautiful tone to her voice - never heard anything like since - Caravan is just a stunning song too.

  • I have seen Petula Clark, Helen Reddy,Linda Nolan ( all great singers in their own fields ) in this show, but nobody carries this off like Barbara ( just my thoughts )

  • i saw this play last wednesday and it was amazing, i was crying my eyes out.

i love this song, it is amazing.

    <3 narrator (Craig Price)

  • my alumni highschool just performed this show, and it was Awesome!!!!

  • Exquisite voice. Thanks for sharing it.

  • i see blood brothers it was well good am going to see it again

  • I saw Blood Brothers today for the first time and I made sure I didn't know the story before I went and I was simply amazed.

It is THE best musical I've ever seen and I was crying hysterically at the ending.

  • I am playing the role of Micky in our am/dram version of the none musical version. It's a fun part to do but very tragic.

  • I love this song and can never get enough of that play
