  • Even the Venus Fly Trap eats (absorbs) insects, a form of protein. Are we anthropomorphizing creatures that would not show the same consideration towards human beings? However, I cannot help but project my empathy not only to animals but the environment around me. I can see the inhumanity yet nature is not entirely human.

  • You're almost there. Now just substitute the word "Vegan" for the outdated term "vegetarian". Once again, the future is not in vegetarianism but Veganism.

    That's "VEGAN" not "vegetarian".

  • Thank you. Though with some exceptions, most notably in tibet, monasteries maintain a vegetarian diet. And that is because of the spirit behind Buddha's injunction you mention; specifically, Buddha did not want his monks to reject and insult the kindness of an offering. He also specified that one should not permit or knowingly consume meat which has been purposefully killed for him. This was an important notation. And finally, you're right that any egoistic claims of superiority would be worse!

  • As recorded in the Pali scriptures, the Buddha did not prohibit consumption of meat, even by monks. In fact, he explicitly rejected a suggestion from Devadatta to do so. In modern Theravada societies, a bhikkhu who adheres to vegetarianism to impress others with his superior spirituality may be committing an infringement of the monastic rules. .....I just want to separate Vegetarianism from Buddhism.

  • "...it would be as if half the world became vegetarian."

    I love that.

    Thanks for your comment, rockman!

  • I do not think I will go totally vegetarian but i will certainly reduce the amount i use.

Currently we are enjoying stir fry. We use a highe ratio of veggies to meat than before and it is very good.

As I heard with in a ted talks lecture if we cut our use of meat products in half it would be as if half the world became vegetarian.

*I have heard that we spend 5 calories in fuel to produce 1 calorie of food.If so our current paradigm will end sooner or later.

    *farm of the future BBC

  • love the Triple Tragedy language. weaker immune systems of meat eaters on a whole, less clean earth, difficulty to meditate on meats..most of the time, the feeling of domination over the animal, sometimes. Suffering of the animal most of the time, but not always. I healed from bone cancer and getting raw / vegan was wildly helpful in just 30 days vs the years I had to battle before... & Vegan Women taste better, smell better and look younger at every age, have stronger bones and great vigor.

  • well said very true cheers junglesurfer

  • Hi AppleSouffle, the numbers are there, and the UN has now taken up the issue. It takes up to 16 pounds of grain to produce just 1 pound of edible animal flesh.

But yes, corruption is another evil, making distribution a real problem.

But again, the idea is compassionate, conscientious change in our own individual ways.

    Thanks for watching. ~DQ

  • Somewhere I remember reading it's not true that we could feed a zillion more people if everyone were vegetarian because plant foods are not nearly as energy dense as meats.

I have heard 2 people on Public Radio, who are involved with sending food to people in Africa, that the problem is not having the food to send, but that so much of the food can't get to the people. The selfish leaders take most of everything that's intended for the poor people.

  • I agree with this professor 100%. We need more teachers like this one all over the world.
