  • George Duke said..considering Zappa's wizardry with modern classical music, polyrhthmic innovations...he was a blues player at heart.

Not surprising he kept good time on this...

  • I have never seen Frank play acoustic. It's AWESOME.

  • wow, frank got Norman gunston. i was too young to see these show, so big thanks for uploading.

  • I saw Frank play 3 concerts at the Horden Pavilion in Sydney over a couple of tours in the early seventies. Norman did jam live with Frank, Norm was a Mother - not many could handle that. Frank set the bar pretty high. Norm walked on stage as we were all leaving at the end of the night with a broom and swept up the stage. Good on ya Gary

  • LOL @ static on his lips & used 2 pik up lint

  • Hard to believe Gary MacDonald suffered from depression

  • WoW,Go Normy that was so good!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • love this!!

  • Crap! Norman can actually play that thing, was expecting it to be a total piss take cat wail. LMAO

    Great stuff :-D

  • can someone PLEASE find and post here norman's video of "I MIGHT BE A PUNK BUT I LOVE YA BABY" one of his best , cant find it ANYWHERE . THANX .

  • two genius' right there

  • bizarro!

  • hahahaha you can see zappa thinking "holy shit, this guy can actually play"

  • Trev Gunston is the best, full stop.

  • wish i,ve would have to play harp with him pretty cool stuff'Frank was such a genius.

  • greatest tv interviewer. Borat is a beginner compare to gunston

  • Classic stuff - he was genuinely talented enough to have the great FZ's admiration.

  • gunston is the greatest

  • Normans actually a great Chromatic player too!....loll

  • His hair is amazing here! xD

  • To perform such erudite comedy and make it look easy, like Macdonald does, one has to be sensitive.A double edged sword, hope he is feeling better now from his woes.

  • Loved Norman when I lived in Oz a long time ago...can you update me as to what is "woes" are...

  • Oh he had a complete nervous breakdown, got very involved in Siddha Yoga, seemed to no tbe good for him.He had a long period of recuperation, but is performing again now and trying to help others who have experienced the same!

  • lol

  • WONDERFUL!

    I LOVE Zappa.

  • Best comedian in Australia once..wish he came back! :)

  • gary macdonald ..... legend.

  • heeeeeeeeeey

  • I think I heard that little "tip-tap" on a Boston street corner once, and in Denver, and in St. Louis et al.

  • dude gunston can play awsom

  • genius

  • he got frank to giggle that was funny as all hell

  • very impressive playing by norman gunston, zappa looks really impressed by it. Normans interview with kiss from 1980 is another classic where they insult him all in good fun.

  • flips him off and plays a good harmo

    aussie all the way eh?

  • a nice treat here - a little humor is a kick!

  • Somewhere on utube is a 4 minute version of this

  • Dude that was superb!! Thanks!!

  • NB don't have film clip of Kiss Army, but still have the single. The B-side, 'Normdrum' (piss-take on Ian Meldrum) is side-splitting.

I am marching in the Kiss Army

    breathing Fiery Breath-o

I burned my tonsils and my tummy

    when I swallowed the metho

  • Shame it's not the whole interview. I loved it when he appeared in Countdown to 'mime...er sing my latest single' - Peter Allen's 'I Go to Rio', while Allen was co-hosting the show. He was very obviously unimpressed at Norman rolling around on the piano shaking maracas.

  • awesome to see Frank interact with someone he seems to like.....haha.....awesome clip!....

  • I'm looking for Norman doing his KISS-single....anyone???

  • Someone may correct me, but I can't think of any other video clip where Frank plays an acoustic.

  • He throws in the ABC News Theme at the end: clever guy

  • chiiiiilllleeeen

  • In the full interview Gunston referred to Zappa as Mother Superior(lol) and Norman did join Zappa's Band for encores at Sydney show ...i was there!

  • lucky to have seen that for sure!

  • very lucky yes ! Can still remember the crowd going crazy when Gunston walked on stage in same blue suit and traded solo's with zappa at immense volume !!!!woooooooooo hoooooooooooooooooooooooo.

  • Would have Been a Great Moment. Don't forget Norman was on the Parliament steps when Gough told Sir John KLerr where to go!! Gunston was the Best.

  • Dude that's so sick! Frank was so cool like that, he'd always let all sorts of people get into the musical action in the mothers days.

  • @mentalsum Yeah he sure did. McDonald is a great harp player.

  • LOL. He plays the theme to the ABC News!!!

  • LOL. Well Norman can play harmonica better than I can...

  • What a first-rate musician. And that bloke with the hair isn't bad, either.
