The show and album are both BRILLIANT. I think the music is slightly better live. The last clip w/ the spinning plates was the 'finale' and was mind-bogglingly amazing.

Please go see it and get the album. We need more cool stuff like this for big shows rather than same-ol' same-ol' musicals that sound like every other musical.

This is modern, original and forges a new path for musical theatre. Well done Damon + Crew!!!!

i worked on this at the royal opera house covent garden. it was one of the ebst things ive ever worked on and seen! at present its doing a run in a specially designed tent at the o2 arena, who knows where it could go. i think they may tour europe before going anywhere else though

Its based on Journey to the West. Great story, read it. Its about 4 people travelling west to India in order to retrieve a sutra. Its about Buddhism.. Really good.. One of the best Chinese legends out there... There is a teacher and 3 students:

Monkey King a misunderstood troublemaker that nearly destroys heaven. Was stuck under a stone for 500 years.

Sand Monk who used to be a soldier (forgot what rank) in heaven but was exiled.

and a demon pig who used to be a general up in heaven.

As much as I think the monkey king is awesome it makes me sad to see how the focus keeps shifting onto the monkey king as entertainment as opposed to seeing the story for what it is. I mean, yeah the general story is about a monk, whoopee how boring. But still, the essence and meaning of the story, as well as the purpose of the character of the monkey king, are all lost in a sense.

I actually think its a interesting concept. Although the opera does not follow the original story, I believe seeing the story in a different perspective gives it an more interesting effect for all people even the Chinese. You have to understand that it is an opera, so concentrating on only the story won't make sense. But listening to the music and observing the unique costumes allows an opera to be more appreciated.
