Sidney Poitier is from the Caribbean Islands(Bahamas), so is Rhianna (Barbados). Now if Sidney Poitier was the same age as Rhianna today, do you think that Sidney Poitier's style of eloquance would be able to sweep Rhianna off her feet, or does she not have enough class as Poitier?
Hey c'mon even Poiter would never have laid a hand on Rhianna like Chris Brown did.

All the comments about his speach. People from the West Indies speak english very well. The problem is that in our navie tounge we speak very fast. When we come to America we have to speak slowly and pronounce each word or Americans would not understand. And by the way English people do not speak like Americans.
@bajanstorm66 I 100% agree with your comment. my grandma is jamaican and she speaks english perfectly well. I would even go as far as saying that she speaks it better than english people from boarding schools lol.
Sidney = Great He had to be, to get the respect that he earned in a time when it was hard to come by. I think nowadays the Hip Hop culture has become very appealing to other races and that Ghetto talk has become widely accepted. It's sometimes nice to hear hear someone (not even born in this country) speak so eloquently. There still are some people (of any race) that can master our language but i fear that is headed towards extinction. I respect Bill Cosby as well, for trying to warn us.
@resincoatedlungs An incredibly blanket statement about a group of people that are as diverse as any. Sure there are elements in Black community that speak as you characterized just as there are elements in the greater White community that butcher the English language in their own way. Your statement sounds more like a justification for racism and continued intolerance.
@resincoatedlungs That is the cause of the failures of the homes that many of our youlg black people were raised in. Failure of a strong home is the cause of the hip hop culture creeping through the cracks to corrupt our black youth with this ghetto language and identify it as black culture. Not to mention how corporations are promoting this stereotypical garbage around the world giving educated black eloquent speaking gentlemen like me a bad name.
40% of Brazilian is Black and poor. In this video a brother express his indignation with PSDB that had been in the government for more the 20 years and had ignored black people keeping us on the shadow of hope of better days, now we´re betting our hope on the PT party and DILMA ROUSSEF.
PSDB, the second largest party went to the second round in 10/31 and didn´t not elected a single black candidate for any position in this election.
i am proud to call Mr. Poitier a mentor, and a friend. He is only one of a few who has caused me to shed a tear, to laugh a laugh, and to ponder a reality. He is truly a gifted man and a true definition of what it means to be human. I only wish we had such a person today in entertainment to teach such morales.
With everyone's consensus, I have formed an conclusion and If i may ask, is it safe for everyone to say that "ghetto" is an unintelligent form of speaking english??? Honestly.
With everyone's consensus, I have formed an conclusion and If i may ask, is it safe for everyone to say that "ghetto" is an unintelligent form of speaking english??? Honestly.
@kevinkevinpham PURPOSELY unintelligent, as opposed to really not knowing any better. Just as bad (worse?) are white kids who try (TRY) to speak in a way they THINK black Americans talk. (South Park did a spoof of this.) Something similar that one sees on YouTube is people who think it's "cool" to purposely misspell things. I'm not talking about honest typos, butt abowt pipul hu ryte lyk dhis.
He was/is my favorite actor. Loved In the Heat of the Night . What a ride!!
Guess Who's Coming to Dinner great too. We play them both often.
His eloquence, intelligence in speaking and coolness is what always attracted me. In the 60's he was just the jolt the country needed to move forward the civil rights movement.
I'm white so what. We want a better world all of us don't we?
Sidney Poitier has the most beautiful accent and speaks so wonderfully and clearly. Such a handsome man. To Sir with Love is an excellent movie which he is terrific in, great movie with great actors. Sidney Poitier, you are truly one of the best actors.
@krissa9 I read that it's because he wanted to show that he could as perfectly english as anybody. It was hard for him at the beginnig because his parents had an african accent, but he listened a lot to the radio.
This extraordinary man has always been very articulated and intelligent,and he delivered his statement beautifully. Its a shame that he literally,had 2 struggle 4 survival as a black male in white america,but he didn't let ANYONE or ANYTHING stop him from being a successful actor,and winning prestige awards. BLACK AMERICA owes a lot 2 this man.
Very, very well stated!!! Even in the turn of a new century, interviews of honesty and integrity remains the key to unleach suppression (s) of anykind!
Thank you for posting this historical interview. God Bless!
No actor/actress has a single year resume as Sir Sidney PoiTier...1967..."To Sir With Love"..."In The Heat Of The Night"..."Guess Who's Coming To Dinner"...One of my handful of favorite actors...a white I am...age 45...
There will always be injustice in conflict, on both sides. It is the bad apples that ruin it for the rest of us.
"There are so many crimes that minorities perpetuate on whites I am stunned that the media can suppress this. Many of these crimes involve mutilation and torture. "
That's bullshit never fight violence with violence.
parsome you are incredibly naive and apparently like to dictate what others should think I don't have to explain to you why i find the so called civil rights struggle dull. but i feel most of it is overbearing propaganda designed to make s sector of the populous feel good about themselves. while there is nothing wrong with propaganda per se, i find the this entire portion of history does not appeal to me. the only bad apple here Parsome is you....find someone else to harass.
furthermore parsome you are talking civil rights while infringing on mine. you are a hypocrite of the worst kind. your brand of thinking is responsible for fascism and brutal crimes against others. you apparently don't know that, so read a history book some time you arrogant fool.
Are you trying to provoke people? I know you mean no harm in your silly comment, however, understand that people laid their lives down for Freedom. Do you know how much Freedom means to an oppressed group of people? It means Justice, not for them, but for the future of their unborn children. "Dull, boring," History is NOT for entertaining, reconsider your perspective. Join the rest of us who love each other.
what a disgusting piece of human garbage you are... I however take great solace in the fact that yours is a dying breed of crap that will live out your life in misery as minorities take more and more important positions and you remain in the dirt where you belong cursing them and believing that your failure is somehow connected with their success... mmm how I love the agony you'll feel for the rest of your waste of a life
What I don't understand is why there are so many intelligent men and women in today's America, yet people aspire to talk "Ghetto" even if they're not from a ghetto. It's sad that, in the US, very few people are as well spoken as Mr. Poitier.
@cri8tor that fuckin annoys me also.ppl trying 2 talk ghetto when they are not.im from bed stuy so i have a ghetto accent not very string cuz i try 2 sound a little more professional but thats how i was raised and thats how i speak but it pisses me off when ppl are like yoyoyo this and that and ts all fake.
@LilBlitz116 what you should remember is that talking 'ghetto' incapsulates a zeitgeist ,and the trademarks of globalisation and more specifically an MTV culture .Every generation has had it's own way of talking.So you don't have to be from a ghetto,you pretty much just have to be alive and tuned into the free world.
When I first joined the Army, I swore that I didn't have a California accent, but my fellow soldiers said I sounded like a guy who just got of wave and I was still holding my surf board.
@cri8tor I'm assuming you've met all Americans.It's a vast country with a very diverse population.MTV culture isn't ALL of American culture. Slang permeates through all societies and is specific to it's place and locale.There are many people who are well spoken but speaking 'ghetto' as you put it,isn't just an american thing.I'm sure not all New Zealanders are well spoken .Don't be pretentious and pretend otherwise.
You totally missed my point and you don't know the definition of "pretentious," so maybe you should read a little more carefully before making any assumptions about who I am and where I've been. I was a soldier in the US Army for 16-years, fought in the Iraq war along side my brothers and I graduated from UC Davis, so I think I know Americans pretty well. My point is that many people are total posers and I wish they didn't feel the need to be unnecessarily.
I think you can figure out the answer for yourself, but there are still many posers out there who feel the need to be something they're not. That is what is truly sad.
@cri8tor The ghetto talking culture is inspired by the hip hop culture that is teaching young black not to speak proper English (especially those who speak ESL). I follow Sidney Poitier's eloquence in the way he talks. It's sad to know that when a young educated black man like me dresses elegant and talks with eloquence that many of our young black women in North America don't appreciate it because they think I am trying to be white.
I feel for you shel. I have many black friends from all over the world and a majority of them have the same problem, so they date Indian, European and Asian women instead of woman of color. I have a lot of respect for you because you've got the guts to be an educated, well spoken man.
@sheltv100: I don't even dress all that elegant per say, but I wear my pants above my butt crack and I can carry out a normal conversation in the queen's english without sputtering "Yo" and "Aye" and "Nigga" every other sentence.
But I'm with you on the women. When a black man tries to rise above the stupidity of his race and make the best of himself, he is called "White" by his own people and is shunned by black women. These very same women then complain when the thugs cheat and mistreat them.
@Quincy5501 That's very true. Oh By the way it's not the stupidity of the black race, it's the stupidity that people in the black community are condoning thanks to that bloody hip hop culture.
As for black women, I love my black women but I wish more black women in North America could be more like CNN's Isha Sesay. She is the black woman of my dreams. Have you seen Isha Sesay on CNN before?
@sheltv100 I am a 19 year old black young woman and as soon as this clip started i said to myself "I wish there were more 19 year old young men that thought, spoke and looked like this." We just need more hope for ourselves.
@TheChelitadiva I was 19 just like you and I have always been like this. The only difference is I was more nuttier back then, and more subservient and less open minded. Now I am more open minded and less subservient. Yes I must admit that I can be a bad boy too (when it comes to sex), but at the same time, I still like to carry myself as a very descent man in the way I dress and the way I speak.
@sheltv100 Its so true, but guess what, to them its not cool until a rapper does it first. So what does that tell you... that you're better than them. You'll be enjoying the leisurely lifestyle that having a well paying job brings, while they'll still be out side dreaming, and blaming others for their misfortunes.
@sheltv100 exactly! it's such a damaging and negative idea to think that trying to become educated and successful is "acting white." what does that mean, that "acting black" is being ignorant and self-destructive? people who think like that are only buying into ideas that white supremacists have about them, but ironically think they're staying true to their race, or some insidious bullshit along those lines.
@sheltv100 Yea, I agree 100%. I mean Im all for the diversity and variations that come with speech and choice of dress. Though, I have extreme disdain for my own peers trying to crucify me for not participating in that. Then again, I've had more white people tell me I'm the whitest person they know....so it's bipartisan held view that needs to change.
@sheltv100 dude hush and have a fucking seat. the fact that you think women should be throwing their panties at you because you somehow can read a dictionary is not only ethnocentric but sexist as fuck.
@sheltv100 black people been talking "ghetto" waaaaay before rap music.Like jive in the 70's. The dialect came from slavery. Read a Richard Wright book and you'd learn about it
yea well ask Dihann Carol what she thinks of him. He was chauvinistic and treated her like he owned her with his messed up mentality that the woman was to serve him like a dog.
I read his auto-biograghy and it was really intresting. For instance, he grew up in a really poor village where they did not have mirrors or worry about apperance, so he was like 13 before he ever saw what he looked like. He also said that something like racism was hard for him to understand, since most of the people he grew up with him were black and the few white people he met never treated him badly because he was black. The first time he ever encounter racism was when he moved to America.
The right wing promotes so much racism even today.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
civil rights and black history is incredibly dull.
azintp 2 years ago
Are you trying to provoke people? I know you mean no harm in your silly comment, however, understand that people laid their lives down for Freedom. Do you know how much Freedom means to an oppressed group of people? It means Justice, not for them, but for the future of their unborn children. "Dull, boring," History is NOT for entertaining, reconsider your perspective. Join the rest of us who love each other.

@azintp yeah because "white" history was so much fucking better. I mean with all the stealing and killing, and a bad superior complex.

what a disgusting piece of human garbage you are...

He's not gay. He's been married twice--both for very long periods (still married to his second wife), and he has six kids.
He's been a CLASS ACT on the world stage for over 50 years now...

What was the song you used in the background? I really liked it. I kept watching it because I wanted to keep listening to the song.

LilBlitz116 1 year ago
@LilBlitz116 what you should remember is that talking 'ghetto' incapsulates a zeitgeist ,and the trademarks of globalisation and more specifically an MTV culture .Every generation has had it's own way of talking.So you don't have to be from a ghetto,you pretty much just have to be alive and tuned into the free world.
Merrylikechristmas 1 year ago
@LilBlitz116
I couldn't agree with you more.
When I first joined the Army, I swore that I didn't have a California accent, but my fellow soldiers said I sounded like a guy who just got of wave and I was still holding my surf board.
cri8tor 1 year ago
@cri8tor I'm assuming you've met all Americans.It's a vast country with a very diverse population.MTV culture isn't ALL of American culture. Slang permeates through all societies and is specific to it's place and locale.There are many people who are well spoken but speaking 'ghetto' as you put it,isn't just an american thing.I'm sure not all New Zealanders are well spoken .Don't be pretentious and pretend otherwise.
Merrylikechristmas 1 year ago
@Merrylikechristmas

@cri8tor why do so many speak appalaichain and brooklynese? why do so many speak valley talk? why do some speak with a southern drawl?
truth2masses 1 year ago
@truth2masses

It's sad to know that when a young educated black man like me dresses elegant and talks with eloquence that many of our young black women in North America don't appreciate it because they think I am trying to be white.
sheltv100 1 year ago 20
@sheltv100
I feel for you shel. I have many black friends from all over the world and a majority of them have the same problem, so they date Indian, European and Asian women instead of woman of color. I have a lot of respect for you because you've got the guts to be an educated, well spoken man.
Cheers
cri8tor 1 year ago
@cri8tor Thanks a lot.
sheltv100 1 year ago
@sheltv100: I don't even dress all that elegant per say, but I wear my pants above my butt crack and I can carry out a normal conversation in the queen's english without sputtering "Yo" and "Aye" and "Nigga" every other sentence.
But I'm with you on the women. When a black man tries to rise above the stupidity of his race and make the best of himself, he is called "White" by his own people and is shunned by black women. These very same women then complain when the thugs cheat and mistreat them.
Quincy5501 1 year ago

TheChelitadiva 2 months ago
@TheChelitadiva I was 19 just like you and I have always been like this. The only difference is I was more nuttier back then, and more subservient and less open minded. Now I am more open minded and less subservient. Yes I must admit that I can be a bad boy too (when it comes to sex), but at the same time, I still like to carry myself as a very descent man in the way I dress and the way I speak.
sheltv100 2 months ago
@sheltv100 Its so true, but guess what, to them its not cool until a rapper does it first. So what does that tell you... that you're better than them. You'll be enjoying the leisurely lifestyle that having a well paying job brings, while they'll still be out side dreaming, and blaming others for their misfortunes.
EnchantEmerson 2 months ago
@sheltv100 exactly! it's such a damaging and negative idea to think that trying to become educated and successful is "acting white." what does that mean, that "acting black" is being ignorant and self-destructive? people who think like that are only buying into ideas that white supremacists have about them, but ironically think they're staying true to their race, or some insidious bullshit along those lines.
MadOldPete 1 month ago

I never thought that Sidney Poitier was of a Carbean desent, I have always thought him to be a natural American
Shaft2009 3 years ago
I read his auto-biograghy and it was really intresting. For instance, he grew up in a really poor village where they did not have mirrors or worry about apperance, so he was like 13 before he ever saw what he looked like. He also said that something like racism was hard for him to understand, since most of the people he grew up with him were black and the few white people he met never treated him badly because he was black. The first time he ever encounter racism was when he moved to America.

@Shaft2009 It's Caribbean.
Yes he is of Caribbean descent just like me. So are Queen Letifa, Colin Powel, Wycliff Jean, Rhiana, and Harry Belafonte.
