As jordan said, this is a worst-case scenario stress test, applying full braking power in an overweight landing situation. The brakes would not react this way under anything approaching normal circumstances. Yes, the brakes caught on fire, but the important thing is they can still stop the plane under those conditions. You can always evacuate the plane if you have to once it's on the ground and stopped.

Hmm, I see a lot of reactions with: cool the brakes with water or put the fire out.

NEVER do that! The brake will explode! about 14 years ago a german airliner had to use his emergency brakes, one firefighter wasnt beware of the danger and opened his hose... 4 people where killed instandly.

So, Leave the brakes as it is. Brakes have to cool for 30 minutes, after about 75 minutes the brake has his normal tempature back.

Thats pretty good engineering. Brake temperature.....HOLY SHIT ITS OFF THE SCALE!!!! I think they should but water just to spray on the brakes as the plane lands.

And that was maximum strength braking remember. In reality it is very unlikely that the brakes will ever go through that except in a major emergency.
