It was the first time a rock band from the Western Hemisphere would play behind the Iron Curtain when on April 13 they played two shows at the Palace of Culture and Science building in Warsaw, Poland. The tickets to the concert were given out by the Communist Party much to the bands dismay. The people who did attend were told to behave accordingly during the concert or they would be removed from the venue. After the concerts, the band drove down the streets distributing their records to fans
Many bands actually did tours in Eastern Europe but mostly in Yugoslavia and sometimes in Hungary. Interesting, they so rarely appeared in Soviet Union until 1988 although at least in 70s it wasn`t a mission impossible to get there. Elton John did it and it wasn`t so hard. The authorities in Brezhnev era tried to show that SU isn`t so abnormal country to live in.
They did perform live in Spring 1968 at the NME Poll Winners Concert. They did a surprise appearance and played Jumpin Jack Flash and Satisfaction. That was the last live appearance with Brian. They brought the house down. Later, they did RnRCircus, which was a pseudo-live event.
Hehe, Polish communist officials didn't pay them with money, they paid them with two carriages of vodka. It's true, you can read this in some rock encyclopedias. :D
I've always understood that in communist days rock n' roll was verboten-including rock groups like the Stones. So then such bands WERE allowed to travel into east bloc countries after all.
True, but in an interview Keith says that at first in Warsaw, the front rows were filled with Party officials with their fingers in their ears. Stones told them to get out and let the kids down front. From then on it was riotous.
They were verboten. Then in Poland they thought they would try and curry favour with the youth and put the Stones on. As someone else had said party officials grabbed the best seats. What it doesn't show is the near riot afterwards which terrified the communist Officials who weren't used to people arguing with officals and the police and refusing to disperse. The authorities were that worried atr what the young people were like that they never allowed any more rock acts in.
It's hard to know the truth-in the u.s. as you may know there was alot of anti-communist propagand prior to 1989 so its hard to know for sure how the rock music scene was treated in such countries in those days. :)

No PhillyGal, there wasn't a lot of anti-communist propaganda here in the U.S. prior to 1989. It was all pretty much true. I guess you never got the message about how tyrannical they really were. Did you know that you could get arrested in Moscow for owning a Sergeant Pepper album in 1967? Nobody in America prevented you from learning what Communism was really like, you are just too stupid to find out yourself.
You're a moron. What I do when someone can only respond to a post of mine with an insult is to just ignore the childish troll. Fuck you and good bye. :)

The 1969 tour is generally referred to as their "comeback" tour. Both they and The Beatles "went away" (stopped touring) in '66 but The Beatles never came back. The NME gig and RRC don't count. Majesties was panned by critics (I love the album). In '68, JJF and BB were crucial to The Stones career. Therefore, 1969 was the "make or break" tour for The Stones in America. They rose to the occasion and even the Altamont fiasco added to their mystique.
This IS historical footage. Keith talks about this concert in the interview he gave in 1971 to Robert Greenfield in Rolling Stone Magazine. This was the last concert tour by the Stones before their two-year layoff, the busts, Brian's downfall and their comeback tour of 1969 (with Mick Taylor). Amazing stuff! Thanks to you for posting this.
Yeah Rock n Roll City Anger! Thank you for the Stones in Rotterdam 1973. Sorry, this is so cool, that I had to put it on my site. - Keep on Rocking, City Anger - and thanx again for your brillant Stones Clips . By the way: the one from "SF" (Swiss Televison) you called "Rare footage from 1975 tour" is acctually from 15th of June 1976 at the Hallenstadion in Zuerich-Oerlikon in Switzerland. I'm sure, because it was my first Stones Concert. Cheers Rock n Roll Dude

@pbmax: Communists hated this band too. But you probably prefer that ideology to republicanism. So you're pretty much an imbecile.
