These some of the most ignorant interview questions on the subject of "jazz" music I have ever heard. "How did Bird and Coltrane influence your playing?" What a bullshit question. Didn't Miles pick Colrane up and put HIM in HIS band? Wait a minute here. Sounds like the interviewer is some random guy from a Smooth Jazz and R&B festival reading off some pamphlet with some questions from the point of view of a person who doesn't know anything about jazz.
From what I have heard, Miles was shy, highly sensitive, and very intelligent. He masked it with biting wit, sarcasm, but helped you face your truth and come to him with it. If you could not find that courage within he rolled over you and kept steppin'. He could also be very caring, almost tender. But he was a channel of highly creative power; what he called both a blessing and a curse. One also has to see it in the context in which he came up along with family dynamics. Not easy for him or us.
.....what just happened?! LOL...."If there are things you want to talk about, feel free to do so"....dude, MILES DOESN'T WANT TO TALK TO YOU. Geeeeez! hahah. This is ridiculous. Should've left him alone.
I knew a guy who knows a few of the old jazz guys, namely Lou Donaldson and he said Miles was considered a jerk by musicians who knew him and he even said that they didnt have anything good to say about him as a person.
This guy approached miles completely the wrong way lol. And Mile's pieces answer alot of the questions, I dont like to talk about that shit either, go figure it out.
Miles davis is a bad ass mofo, he already answered all those questions you stupid interviewer.

The inteerviewer is a retarded kid who doesnt have any idea who MIles is or what to ask him lol.
I just posted a really incredible 2 part MIles Davis interview where he talks about his art work. Its a RedPortiaOne exclusive so come check it out :)
Miles Davis does answer all the questions put to him in very gentle and authentic style - he is being completely true to himslef but also interfacing with the interview - just not in the way that the interviewer expects or wants - btw thought the kid doing the interview did just fine - he had his own decent style - just that Miles roughed him up right off the bat - listening to Miles speak is as much of a masterclass as listening to him play - may be even more so as you can implement immediately
Wasn't this his infamous calling a radio station in the late 70s when Miles was at the lowest point of his life? Fucked up to the nines pretty much. Miles though was good at putting people in their place for bad questions or probing too much... the cagey motherfucker he was (and he loved calling people motherfucker!).
This Interviewer Should be shot or slapped a thousand times....If your gonna interview Miles at least have some questions planed out and make him feel at ease after calling him out of the blue like that .... thats so disrepectful....He sounds like he's trying to be Miles Therapist....
it wasn't a matter of miles being a "genius" or an asshole or some stoic unapproachable dude, it was a matter of the interviewer coming at him sideways with saying things like "it's all up to you, say what you want" and not directing the interview in a professional way. i'll bet anything miles was just pissed because he probably could have spent his time doing more productive things than trying to work around haphazardly put together interview. frankly it's disprespectful towards miles.
Miles was a hard man to communicate with. he was born one day during a huge storm i think. he was the most intimidating celebrity ever. very complex. beautiful. genius.
I love people commenting and saying 'miles is a little up himself eh?' etc etc... it's Miles Davis youre talking about. He can say whatever he wants....
not a good interview. Not that its easy to interview Miles. Hes probibly the toughest person to interview, hes just too damn cool for us mere mortals.
the interviewer came to a gunfight with a popsicle. How did he ever get an interview with Miles? I thought Miles was very patient with him...considering those inept questions. "Uh.....say whatever you want Miles.." WTF!!!
Where's the rest of the interview? Miles was just about to talk about one of the most fierce recordings he ever made..."Agartha" He was comparing his interest in Stockhausen to that recording. The interviewer was stuck in a certain era a Miles development but Miles made great recordings in the 70s...
Maybe if the interviewer would ask a better question, or even A question at all. Who asks a musician "do you wanna say something about your musical style? ...anything?"
I mean this is MILES DAVIS. Think of an INTERESTING question to ask him.
That being said, it sounds like Miles has taken too much acid.

How are you going to argue with MILES over the definition of "jazz". What a moron. Thats like arguing with Einstein over what "energy" means.

It may be unlikely, given that it was just a small college radio station conducting the interview, and it was quite a few years ago.
